7.1 Design 7 PRACTICAL EVALUATION<br />

7.1.1 Educational material<br />

The selection <strong>of</strong> the educational material that was to be converted with the HEAT<br />

had to address several issues to produce the best evaluation results.<br />

Firstly, it was decided to convert educational material from two different topic<br />

areas. This choice was expected to provide insights concerning the influence <strong>of</strong><br />

the author’s personal knowledge <strong>of</strong> the educational material on the conversion <strong>of</strong><br />

the educational material with the HEAT.<br />

Secondly, it is important that one part <strong>of</strong> the educational material is already exist-<br />

ing in some form, for example a course book, and the other part <strong>of</strong> the educational<br />

material will be authored from scratch. This approach will provide some informa-<br />

tion concerning the influence <strong>of</strong> pre-existing material on the authoring process.<br />

Finally, the selected educational material should cover as many different TLSs as<br />

possible. Any additional TLSs needed can then be discussed and addressed in the<br />

future (cf. section 9.2).<br />

7.1.2 Aim <strong>of</strong> evaluation<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> the practical evaluation <strong>of</strong> the HEAT was to address the following<br />

issues during the process <strong>of</strong> converting existing and creating new educational ma-<br />

terial:<br />

• EHP-layer<br />

The practical evaluation will show whether the designed EHPs are usable<br />

and feasible in the conversion <strong>of</strong> existing educational material and whether<br />

there are any limitations in working with the EHPs or if additional EHPs<br />

are needed.<br />

• TLS-layer<br />

It was important to determine if any additional TLSs are needed and if the<br />

existing TLSs are sufficiently designed.<br />

• Linking <strong>of</strong> TLSs<br />

The linking <strong>of</strong> the TLSs represents the students’ navigation through the EM.<br />
