FSE2012 Rules Clarification
7.13 Tractive-system-active light (TSAL)
Reason for clarification:
Teams keep asking, what the exact definition of clearly visible is, especially if
aerodynamic parts may affect visibility.
Exact Rule text to which this document refers:
“The TSAL has to be clearly visible from every horizontal direction, except small
angles which are covered by the main roll hoop, even in very bright sunlight.”
Intention of this part of the rule:
Officials, track marshals, team members, scrutineers etc. need to be able to quickly
determine whether the Tractive System is active or not when approaching the car.
The typical viewing distance is rather low in that case.
Clarification:
The TSAL has to be visible from a person standing up to 3m away from the TSAL
itself. The person's minimum eye height is 1.6m.
To determine whether or not your team is affected by this clarification, the following
could be done:
1) Use a CAD model of the car including all parts that may probably affect the
visibility of the TSAL.
2) Add a cone upside down with the tip of the cone sitting on the TSAL.
3) The base radius of the cone has to be 3m.
4) The height of the base of the cone has to be set to 1.6m above ground.
5) Now remove the base surface of the cone.
6) The resulting CAD model shows, if the visibility of the TSAL is affected
according to this clarification.
7) If you are unsure, add this picture to a rules request and send it to FSE-
