THE FINGER LAKES<br />
COMMUNITY COLLEGE<br />
FOUNDATION<br />
is a not-for-profit charitable corporation established to seek financial support<br />
for the <strong>College</strong> from the private sector. Given the growing constraints <strong>and</strong><br />
reduced levels of public funds today, private giving is increasingly important<br />
to public higher education. Private contributions are vital to maintaining<br />
a st<strong>and</strong>ard of excellence at <strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
The Foundation assists the <strong>College</strong> with equipment purchases, special projects,<br />
faculty development, <strong>and</strong> special-purpose campus events. It also receives <strong>and</strong><br />
manages scholarships that help deserving <strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
students succeed in their chosen fields of study. Many of the named scholarships,<br />
which the Foundation oversees, were established by individuals, businesses,<br />
or community organizations to honor the memory of individuals who were<br />
connected with the <strong>College</strong> <strong>and</strong> its mission.
<strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> Foundation Scholarships<br />
FRESHMAN <strong>SCHOLARSHIPS</strong><br />
AVI Fresh, Inc.<br />
Hospitality Scholarship<br />
Amount: $1,000 (2)<br />
Benefactor: AVI Fresh, Inc.<br />
As the food service provider for FLCC, AVI Fresh created<br />
a scholarship to assist both incoming <strong>and</strong> returning<br />
students who intend to pursue a career in the hospitality<br />
industry. Applicants, who must be matriculated in the<br />
hotel <strong>and</strong> resort management or culinary arts degree<br />
programs, are required to submit an essay identifying<br />
the benefits of a career in the industry.<br />
Bowen Family Memorial Scholarship<br />
Amount: $1,000 ($500 each year)<br />
Benefactors: Bowen Family Members<br />
Awarded the first time for the 2005-2006 academic<br />
year, this scholarship was established in memory<br />
of Eleanor Bowen ’82. Preference is given to graduates<br />
of DeSales High School in Geneva, NY or Geneva<br />
High School if there are no eligible DeSales applicants.<br />
Recipients must demonstrate financial need <strong>and</strong> intend<br />
to pursue a career in a human services field such<br />
as nursing, education, or social services.<br />
Constellation Br<strong>and</strong>s<br />
Viticultural Scholarship<br />
Amount: $1,000<br />
Benefactor: Constellation Br<strong>and</strong>s, Inc.<br />
Constellation Br<strong>and</strong>s created this award in fall 2009<br />
in honor of the company’s (at the time) 25-year<br />
sponsorship of the FLCC Foundation Scholarship<br />
Reception <strong>and</strong> in conjunction with the creation<br />
of FLCC’s A.A.S. degree in viticulture <strong>and</strong> wine<br />
technology. It is awarded annually to one student<br />
who is attending full-time, has excellent potential<br />
for success, <strong>and</strong> exhibits financial need.<br />
Alton B. Corbit Memorial Scholarship<br />

This award was established in memory of Alton Corbit,<br />
who joined FLCC as director of placement <strong>and</strong> community<br />
relations after a 27-year career in the Victor School District.<br />
The scholarship is given to an incoming freshman who<br />
has demonstrated academic merit in high school.<br />
Charlotte Cowie Adult Freshman<br />
Memorial Scholarship<br />

Benefactor: Donald Cowie<br />
Charlotte Cowie started the human services program<br />
at the college <strong>and</strong> then went to Norwalk <strong>Community</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong> in Connecticut where she established a similar<br />
program. At the time of Charlotte’s death in March 1982,<br />
her husb<strong>and</strong>, Donald Cowie, established this memorial<br />
fund in her memory. Initially the fund sponsored an<br />
annual on-campus workshop, but in 1993, Mr. Cowie<br />
decided to use it to support a scholarship for an adult<br />
student returning to college.<br />
FLCC Alumni Association<br />
Traditional-aged Excellence<br />
Scholarship<br />
Amount: $2,000 (over 2 years)<br />
Benefactors: FLCC Graduates <strong>and</strong> Others<br />
This scholarship is presented to a traditional-aged freshman<br />
who is an excellent student <strong>and</strong> who was involved in one<br />
or more community service or school activities during<br />
the year prior to entering FLCC. A minimum 3.4 GPA<br />
is required for second year renewal.<br />

FLCC Alumni Association<br />
Adult Excellence Scholarship<br />
Amount: $2,000 (over 2 years)<br />
Benefactors: FLCC Graduates <strong>and</strong> Others<br />
Awarded to a student who is 24 years old, married,<br />
has a child, or is a veteran, the recipient must be attending<br />
as a full-time student. The recipient must have participated<br />
in a community service activity the year prior to entering<br />
FLCC <strong>and</strong> must demonstrate evidence of outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
academic potential. A minimum 3.4 GPA is required<br />
for second year renewal.<br />
FLCC Alumni Association Regional<br />
Freshman Scholarship<br />

This award is for full-time incoming students who live<br />
in Ontario, Wayne, Seneca, or Yates county <strong>and</strong> have<br />
participated in a school or community activity during<br />

FLCC Board of Trustees Scholarship<br />

Awarded for the first time for the 2005-2006 academic<br />
year, this scholarship is granted to a graduate of<br />
an Ontario County high school, who has taken part<br />
in volunteer or community service activities or student<br />
government, <strong>and</strong> who has a minimum B/85% high<br />
school GPA, <strong>and</strong> demonstrates financial need.<br />
FLCC Gemini Scholarship<br />
Amount: Half-tuition waiver for one year<br />
Eligible students must have a minimum 80% high school<br />
GPA, intend to enroll full-time for the fall semester<br />
following high school graduation, <strong>and</strong> reside in Ontario,<br />
Wayne, Seneca, or Yates county. Preference is given to those<br />
students who have completed a minimum of 6 credits of<br />
Gemini coursework during high school. To be considered<br />
for this award, a completed FLCC application for admission<br />
<strong>and</strong> the FLCC Gemini Scholarship application must be<br />

FLCC Honors Studies<br />
Freshman Scholarship<br />

Gifts from alumni, faculty <strong>and</strong> staff<br />
This scholarship was established by Curtis Nehring Bliss,<br />
director of honors studies, <strong>and</strong> is intended to assist students<br />
who challenge themselves by enrolling in honors studies<br />
courses. Part- <strong>and</strong> full-time students who have attained<br />
a minimum B average in high school may apply. Selection<br />
is also based on an essay in which applicants explore<br />
an exciting idea or recent experience that spurred their<br />
imagination or challenged their intellect.<br />
FLCC President’s Scholarship<br />
Amount: $1,000<br />

Awarded for the first time in 2008, this scholarship<br />
is granted to an incoming student with financial need<br />
<strong>and</strong> excellent potential for success.<br />
<strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> Development Center<br />
for Business Scholarship<br />

In 1983, the <strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> Development Center for<br />
Business (FLDCB) was incorporated to furnish information,<br />
guidance, <strong>and</strong> advice to the <strong>College</strong> <strong>and</strong> to area businesses.<br />
A SUNY designated organization, it made CCFL a regional<br />
access point to the services SUNY <strong>and</strong> the <strong>College</strong> would<br />
offer the local business community. In 1996, more than<br />
$16,000 was donated to the FLCC Foundation to fund<br />
scholarships for adult students in business-related<br />
degree programs.<br />
The Aldo F. <strong>and</strong> Anne J. Fioravanti<br />
Scholarship<br />
Amount: $500<br />
In 2011, Mr. Fioravanti created this scholarship for<br />
an entering freshman who has a minimum 3.0 GPA <strong>and</strong><br />
demonstrates financial need. The student must also be<br />
enrolled full-time in the music or music recording program.<br />
Preference is given to applicants who have sung with the<br />
<strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> Chorale.
Garlock Sealing Technologies<br />
Scholarship<br />

Benefactor: Garlock Sealing Technologies Inc.<br />
Garlock Sealing Technologies, with headquarters<br />
in Palmyra, N.Y., has 15 plants in eight countries <strong>and</strong><br />
employs more than 1,800 people worldwide. Currently<br />
it offers a product line that includes more than 100,000<br />
high-performance sealing solutions as well as<br />
custom-designed products for unique applications.<br />
It offers up to three scholarships annually to incoming<br />
<strong>and</strong> current FLCC students with preference for those<br />
who have a parent, guardian or gr<strong>and</strong>parent who is<br />
a Garlock Sealing Technologies employee or retiree.<br />
Joanne Glover Memorial Scholarship<br />

Awarded for the first time in 2002, this scholarship<br />
was established in memory of longtime FLCC employee,<br />
Joanne Glover. Secretary to the first two presidents<br />
of the <strong>College</strong>, Dr. Roy I. Satre Jr., <strong>and</strong> Dr. Charles J. Meder,<br />
Joanne retired in 1991 after nearly 25 years of employment.<br />
The scholarship honors her work <strong>and</strong> values <strong>and</strong> is meant<br />
to inspire others to lead a life of accomplishment. Each year,<br />
one incoming freshman student intending to become<br />
an administrative assistant is selected<br />
Livingston County Scholarship<br />
Amount: $1,000<br />
Benefactor: Anonymous<br />
A longtime resident of Livingston County, who prefers to<br />
remain anonymous, provides one scholarship annually for<br />
a student who is a permanent resident of Livingston County,<br />
demonstrates financial need, <strong>and</strong> has academic potential.<br />
Frances F. MacLeod Freshman<br />
Nursing Scholarship<br />

Benefactor: Estate of Frances F. MacLeod<br />
Frances Freck MacLeod dedicated her life of more than<br />
100 years to serving others, especially in her chosen career<br />
of nursing. Her estate established the largest ever memorial<br />
fund at FLCC. The recipient is an incoming nursing student<br />
who has a good academic record, clearly articulated goals,<br />
<strong>and</strong> exhibits financial need.<br />
The Michaels Family<br />
Memorial Scholarship<br />

Benefactors: Michaels Family<br />
Originally established to honor two sons of the Michaels<br />
family, Gary <strong>and</strong> Robert, both killed in plane crashes<br />
in the 1970s, the scholarship was renamed at the time<br />
of the death of their father, Michael Michaels. The elder<br />
Mr. Michaels served on the <strong>College</strong> Board of Trustees<br />
from 1968–1978. Awarded for the first time in 1971,<br />
the scholarship is given to a graduate of Geneva High<br />
School entering FLCC the following fall.<br />
Mary E. Moynihan<br />
Memorial Scholarship<br />
Amount: $1,000<br />
Benefactors: Excellus BlueCross BlueShield,<br />
Moynihan Family <strong>and</strong> Friends<br />
Awarded for the first time in 2007, this scholarship was<br />
established in memory of Mary, a resident of Penfield <strong>and</strong><br />
vice president of medical economics for Excellus BCBS.<br />
She lost her life after a tree fell on her car during a wind<br />
storm in February 2006. The scholarship is intended for an<br />
incoming nursing student who is committed to providing<br />
health care in a regional rural community in Allegany,<br />
Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, Yates or Seneca counties.<br />
New York Firefighters Foundation<br />
Scholarship<br />

Benefactor: New York Firefighters Foundation<br />
This scholarship is intended for family members of<br />
New York police officers <strong>and</strong> firefighters who were killed<br />
or disabled in the line of duty.<br />
New York Conservation Officers<br />
Association Scholarship<br />

Officers Association<br />
Awarded since 1996, this scholarship reflects the connection<br />
between the conservation law program at FLCC <strong>and</strong> the<br />
state association. The award is for an incoming freshman<br />
intending to pursue a career in the field of conservation law.<br />

Kenneth A. Poormon ’97<br />
Memorial Scholarship<br />

Benefactor: New York Firefighters Foundation<br />
Named in memory of Kenneth A. Poormon ’97,<br />
a graduate of FLCC <strong>and</strong> former state trooper who<br />
was killed in the line of duty in 2000, this scholarship<br />
is given to dependents <strong>and</strong> immediate family members<br />
of deceased New York policemen.<br />
The Raytec Group Excellence<br />
Scholarship<br />
Amount: Half-tuition cost for two years<br />
Benefactor: Raytec Group<br />
The Raytec Group, located in Fishers, N.Y., awards this<br />
scholarship to one or two Victor High School graduates<br />
through the Dollars for Scholars program at Victor Central<br />
High School. Recipients must demonstrate academic<br />
excellence, school <strong>and</strong> community involvement, <strong>and</strong><br />
have financial need. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required<br />
for second-year renewal.<br />
All-USA Academic Team for<br />

Amy Steverson Memorial Scholarship<br />

Established in memory of Amy Steverson, a FLCC<br />
conservation major at the time of her death in a car<br />
accident in 1992, this scholarship is for a conservation<br />
major who demonstrates financial need.<br />
The Wayne Network Forgivable Loan<br />
Program for Nursing Students<br />
Amount: Forgivable Loan of up to $6,000<br />
to cover tuition <strong>and</strong> fees for two years<br />
Full-time freshmen matriculated in the A.A.S. Nursing<br />
Program at FLCC become eligible to apply for this<br />
program by contacting the chairperson in Wayne County.<br />
Immediately following graduation, students are required<br />
to complete a two-year full-time work commitment<br />
as registered nurses for a participating Wayne County<br />
employer. If the student does not graduate for any reason<br />
or does not work for a designated employer, he or she<br />
is required to pay back the full amount of the loan.<br />

In addition, the recipients must demonstrate financial need.

This award is presented to a full-time student who,<br />
after completing at least one semester at <strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong><br />

a program offered by the mathematics <strong>and</strong>/or computing<br />
sciences departments who is beginning<br />

Becker/Strong Memorial Scholarship<br />

Benevolent Association<br />
This award is in memory of two sheriff ’s deputies<br />
who were killed in the line of duty: Deputy Sheriff<br />
Truman J. Becker in 1981 <strong>and</strong> Deputy Sheriff Malcom<br />
Strong in 1983. The award is given to a criminal justice<br />
student who has successfully completed two semesters<br />
<strong>and</strong> will be returning to FLCC.<br />
Jack L. Bricker Memorial Scholarship<br />

Benefactors: Bricker Family <strong>and</strong> Friends<br />
Chair of the social science department at FLCC at the time<br />
of his retirement in 2000, Jack Bricker was one of the<br />
original faculty members hired at the <strong>College</strong>. He passed<br />
away on December 31, 2006, after a short illness. His family<br />
<strong>and</strong> friends generously remembered him by creating this<br />
scholarship for a returning, part- or full-time student who<br />
has an interest in political science <strong>and</strong>/or history.<br />
Bruce Bridgman Memorial<br />
(Alpha Beta Gamma) Scholarship<br />

This scholarship is in memory of Bruce Bridgman,<br />
who was an FLCC professor of accounting, advisor<br />
to the FLCC Accounting Club, <strong>and</strong> co-advisor of<br />
Alpha Beta Gamma. It was established by family,<br />
friends, <strong>and</strong> community members at the time of his<br />
death. The recipients are Alpha Beta Gamma inductees<br />
who show financial need, academic excellence, <strong>and</strong><br />
involvement in <strong>College</strong> activities.<br />
Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care Scholarship<br />
Amount: $500<br />
Benefactor: Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care Inc.<br />
Awarded to a part- or full-time FLCC horticulture student,<br />
this scholarship recognizes academic achievement,<br />
experience or interest in the field, <strong>and</strong> availability<br />
for a paid internship with the company.<br />
Dr. Ina Sue Brown<br />
Memorial Scholarship<br />
Amount: Tuition for one three-credit course<br />
Benefactors: FLCC Faculty, Staff, Alumni<br />
The recipient of this award is pursuing his or her<br />
educational goals as a part-time student. Dr. Brown,<br />
in whose memory this scholarship is presented, completed<br />
most of her degree work as a part-time student, making<br />
her particularly attuned to the special challenges faced<br />
by part-time learners in higher education.<br />

Donald <strong>and</strong> Jean Burgan<br />
<strong>Community</strong> Service Award<br />

Benefactor: Burgan Family<br />
This scholarship was initially established in honor<br />
of Donald H. Burgan, trustee emeritus of <strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>, who saw the <strong>College</strong> as an instrument<br />
to carry out his personal goals of service to the community.<br />
At the time of Jean Burgan’s death in 1998, many more<br />
donations were made, <strong>and</strong> the Burgans’ three children<br />
changed the name of the scholarship. Award criteria<br />
include a minimum 2.5 GPA <strong>and</strong> leadership in college<br />
<strong>and</strong> community activities.<br />
Dr. Rebecca Burgess<br />
Memorial Scholarship<br />

This scholarship, established in 1999 with gifts from<br />
family, friends, <strong>and</strong> FLCC co-workers, is in memory<br />
of Rebecca Burgess, a longtime faculty member at<br />
<strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>. It is presented to a<br />
returning female student who has demonstrated academic<br />
excellence <strong>and</strong> a commitment to women’s rights issues.<br />
Dr. Henry Buxbaum Memorial<br />
Award for Achievement <strong>and</strong><br />
Promise in Fine Arts<br />
Amount: $500<br />
Benefactors: Dr. Klaus Leo Buxbaum<br />
<strong>and</strong> Dr. Richard M. Buxbaum<br />
Established in May 1979 in memory of Dr. Henry Buxbaum,<br />
this award is presented to a student who demonstrates<br />
superior ability <strong>and</strong> potential as a fine artist.<br />

Student Fire Fighter Program Award<br />
Amount: Up to $2,500 one semester at a time<br />

Bunker Grant<br />
The Can<strong>and</strong>aigua Fire Department was awarded federal<br />
grant funds to assist volunteer firefighters with college<br />
education costs. Awarded one semester at a time, eligible<br />
applicants must have completed at least one semester,<br />
earned a minimum 2.0 GPA, <strong>and</strong> be a volunteer firefighter<br />
in good st<strong>and</strong>ing with their home department. In exchange<br />
for 360 hours of station duty during the semester they<br />
receive the award, each recipient is awarded up to $2,500.<br />
Robert L. (Rodge) Case Award<br />

Duck Hunter’s Club<br />
This scholarship was created in 2003 in honor of the<br />
club’s founding member, Robert L. Case, on the occasion<br />
of the club’s 50th anniversary. It is given annually<br />
to a conservation department student.<br />
Robert L. (Rodge) Case<br />
Conservation Book Award<br />
Amount: $200<br />
Rodge Case, who was the founding member of the<br />
Can<strong>and</strong>aigua Lake Duck Hunter’s Club, passed away<br />
in 2011. The Duck Hunter’s Club received many gifts<br />
in his memory <strong>and</strong> donated the entire amount to the FLCC<br />
Foundation. Each year, the funds will purchase textbooks<br />
at the FLCC Bookstore for one conservation student.<br />

(FLDCB) was incorporated to furnish information,<br />

A SUNY designated organization, it made CCFL a regional<br />
access point to the services SUNY <strong>and</strong> the <strong>College</strong> would<br />
offer the local business community. In 1996, over $16,000<br />
was donated to the FLCC Foundation to fund scholarships<br />
for adult students in business-related degree programs.<br />

Murray Gardner was director of admissions <strong>and</strong> professor<br />
at the MIT graduate school of electrical engineering for<br />
more than 30 years. He was the co-author of the basic<br />

Measurements”, translated into over 55 languages. He<br />
developed the basic formula used in electrical engineering<br />
which is still used today. This award at FLCC, honoring<br />
the late Professor Gardner, continues his legacy of the<br />
importance of a technical education. Recipients are science,<br />
mechanical technology, or engineering students who have<br />
demonstrated academic excellence.<br />

Brooke Makowiec Memorial Award<br />

Brooke Makowiec, a freshman communications major<br />
at the time of her death, was killed in an automobile<br />
accident on December 9, 2005. A member of the softball<br />
team <strong>and</strong> play-by-play announcer for FLCC women’s<br />
basketball games on FLTV, she was known for her<br />
out-going personality, sense of humor, <strong>and</strong> overall<br />
knowledge of sports, which marked her potential to reach<br />
her career goals. Communications faculty <strong>and</strong> staff created<br />
this award to honor Brooke. Presented for the first time<br />
in 2006, it is given to a female communications<br />
or new media major.<br />
Frances F. MacLeod<br />

Frances Freck MacLeod dedicated her life of more than<br />
100 years to serving others, especially in her chosen career<br />

In fall 2010, Thompson Health established the<br />
Thompson Health Nursing Scholarship. Its goal<br />
is twofold: to assist students as they earn their degrees<br />
<strong>and</strong> increase the pool of skilled workers for the health<br />
system <strong>and</strong> other local agencies. The recipient, selected<br />
at the time he or she enters the FLCC nursing program,<br />

Laura’s family <strong>and</strong> employees of Wal-Mart, where Laura<br />
had worked for 17 years, created this award in her memory<br />
<strong>and</strong> gave the first scholarship in 2010. Because Laura<br />
was a member of a championship FLCC woodsmen’s<br />
team when she was a student, they chose to honor her<br />
memory with an award for one female student from<br />
Ontario County who, as a woodsmen’s team member,<br />
exhibits determination <strong>and</strong> team spirit.<br />

This award is presented to a nursing student based<br />

This fund was created by the <strong>Finger</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> Chorale<br />
to provide assistance to music majors at FLCC.<br />
The Chorale adds to the fund through annual<br />
performances. It was renamed to honor FLCC<br />
Professor Emeritus Dr. Walker at the time<br />
of his retirement in 2003.<br />

Wayne F. Williams, honors his parents, Ashley<br />

gives preference to a student who demonstrates<br />
a high level of skill <strong>and</strong> dedication to the art<br />

This award, in memory of Melissa Young, is presented<br />
to a therapeutic massage major who is in good academic<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ing, has faced great challenges while pursuing<br />
his or her degree, <strong>and</strong> demonstrates financial need.<br />
