Jack in the Box Chairman, CEO Lang Opens Monday Convention
If Linda Lang’s cell phone goes off
during her address to the International
Franchise Association’s
49th Annual Convention today,
audience members should cut the
chairman and CEO of Jack in the
Box Inc. some slack. It could be a
call she’s been urgently waiting on
for some time and could determine
the future of the company.
Things changed dramatically February 1 when company
founder Jack Box stepped off a curb while describing the
restaurant’s operations to an employee and was run over by
a bus. Possibly his last words were “…and guests can order
anything on the menu day or night…”
Amazingly, the “accident” was captured on a cell-phone
video and aired before an audience of millions of Super Bowl
fans who had paused for a break in football action. The
remarkably-edgy advertising campaign will continue to be
rolled out for several weeks and include updates on Jack’s
condition. Jack’s fate remains uncertain, but well wishers
around the world maintain a vigil in hopes of his recovery.
In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are encouraged to order
anything they want from the menu, day or night. Supporters
will receive updates on his condition via the Web site www.
hangintherejack.com , through Twitter or join his page on
Facebook.
Lang, who joined Jack in the Box in 1984, has held
various positions of increasing responsibility in marketing,
operations and finance, served as president and COO, then
named chairman and CEO in 2005. She also serves on the
board of The Jack in the Box Foundation, a non-profit organization
which focuses the company’s charitable donations to
make a difference in communities where employees, franchisees
and guests of Jack in the Box restaurants work and live.
In addition to her duties at Jack in the Box, Lang serves
on the board of directors for the WD-40 Co., San Diego State
University’s College of Business Administration and the San
Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. Lang
is also a member of the Corporate Directors Forum. In 2007,
Nation’s Restaurant News honored her with a Golden Chain
Award for her achievements and career accomplishments.
Jack in the Box, based in San Diego, is a restaurant
company that operates and franchises more than 2,100 Jack
in the Box restaurants and more than 400 Qdoba Mexican
Grill restaurants.

139 Franchise Executives Advance
Professional Status
Today, during the Super Session
which begins at 8:00 a.m., 139 smiling
franchise executives will reach a major
milestone in their careers when they
proudly don their Certified Franchise
Executive pin in recognitions of
successful completion of the industry’s
most-intensive educational program.
They will join more than 500 franchise
executives who have achieved the
designation since the early 1980s.
More than 750 candidates are currently
enrolled in the program.
A subsidiary of the IFA Educational
Foundation, the Institute of Certified
Franchise Executives conducts the
program to enable individuals opportunities
to supplement their knowledge,
gain industry recognition and take
advantage of peer-level networking.
The curriculum is specific to franchising.
Designees who complete the program,
which is comprised of a prescribed
course of study, and meet all requirements,
earn the title. The program
actually kicked off its pre-Annual
Convention schedule just before
the event opened with ICFE Special
Sessions running all day on Friday and
Saturday.

Tariq Farid Named
Entrepreneur of the Year

Inc. CEO Tariq
Farid today will
be honored with
the IFA Entrepreneur
of the
Year Award,
sponsored by The Entrepreneur’s
Source. Emigrating from Pakistan
to the United States in 1969, Farid’s
entrepreneurial spirit bloomed at the
age of 17 when he used a $5,000
cash advance from his parents to
purchase a local flower shop in
East Haven, Conn. Within two years
he was operating four successful
stores, building on his experience
from working in a McDonald’s restaurant
where he learned the power of
business systemization. After realizing
the need for quality software systems
for management in the retail floral
industry, he founded software distributor
Netsolace in 1993 and honed his
skills with computer systems.
Farid opened the first Edible
Arrangements establishment in 1999,
offering fresh-fruit designs, franchising
it two years later. He has expanded
the company to more than 800 stores
in the United States, United Arab
Emirates, United Kingdom, Canada
and Puerto Rico.
In 2006, Farid also launched
another franchise concept, Frutation
by Edible Arrangements, out of his
desire to offer consumers an “on-thego”
option. He also founded the
Salma K. Farid Academy, Foundation
and Welfare Center, a not-for-profit
school for the Muslim Community and
serves as a member of Deen Inc. New
Haven, which seeks to revitalize the
inner-city neighborhood.
