Payment <strong>of</strong> Fees: All students will receive a bill by mail for their fees<br />

GENERAL INFORMATION<br />

(Undergraduate) "<br />

Admissions<br />

Students attending <strong>Wisconsin</strong> State <strong>University</strong>-La Crosse for the first<br />

time during the summer session <strong>of</strong> <strong>1971</strong> and who expect to apply credits<br />

earned toward degrees from La Crosse should file an application for ad-<br />

mission well in advance <strong>of</strong> the summer session. Registration for such stu-


dents will be delayed unless these applications are completed and approved<br />

prior to June 14, <strong>1971</strong>. A "completed" application includes :<br />

a. A standard admission blank containing an <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript <strong>of</strong> the<br />

high school record. This high school report is necessary even though<br />

the applicant may have studied at another college since graduating<br />

from high school.<br />

b. Two <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts <strong>of</strong> ALL county teachers college, other college,<br />

or university \~orli completed beyond high school.<br />

c. Submission <strong>of</strong> scores on the American College Test (A.C.T.) to the<br />

Admissions Office. This does not apply to transfer students.<br />

Unclergraduate students who plan to enroll for the summer session<br />

only and who do not plan to ~\'orli toward degrees from La Crosse must<br />

complete a "special student non-degree" form. Write to the Aclmissions Office<br />

for information pertaining to this category.<br />

All courses taken at La Crosse for transfer credit elsewhere should be<br />

cleared with the other institution concerned. Students admitted on a<br />

temporary basis have no assurance that the credits earned will apply<br />

toward degrees at La Crosse or that their temporary admission will be<br />

extended to any subsecluent term.<br />

Questions concerning certification for teaching in the public schools<br />

<strong>of</strong> \Yisconsin should be directed to your school administrator or the Director<br />

<strong>of</strong> Certification, State Department <strong>of</strong> Public Instruction. The university<br />

does not certify teachers. Students who complete the prescribecl curriculums<br />

and graduate from La Crosse, however, are certified automatically by the<br />

State Department <strong>of</strong> Public Instruction for teaching in the specific fields<br />

and at the levels for ~vhich they have prepared.<br />

*Students desiring to take graduate courses should write to the Dean<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Graduate College for the Graduate Bulletin and for information<br />

about procedure for applying for admission to graduate study.<br />

Re-entering Undergraduate Students<br />

Those students who have attended <strong>Wisconsin</strong> State <strong>University</strong>-La<br />

Crosse previously but have been out for one semester or more are classified<br />

as re-entering students. This applies to students \!rho have been previously<br />

enrolled in institutes as \!yell as credit or degree programs. A re-entering<br />

student must complete a re-entry application and a record <strong>of</strong> residence<br />

form.<br />

Re-entering students should write to the Office <strong>of</strong> the Registrar and<br />

ask for these forms at least 2 weeks prior to registration day, June 14,<br />

to avoid delays in registration.<br />

Credit Load<br />

The regular credit load is one credit per week <strong>of</strong> full time attendance,<br />

or eight cred.its-for the eight weelis session. Heavier loads will not be per-<br />

mitt2d unless written approval is obtained in advance. Forms for this<br />

purpose are available in the <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> the deans <strong>of</strong> the colleges. Approval<br />

<strong>of</strong> overloads may be given in cases <strong>of</strong> unusual or extenuating circumstances,<br />

but only to students with substantial academic records.


Residence Requirements<br />

The 1970-72 university catalog (p. 62) states: "A minimum <strong>of</strong> 32<br />

semester hours <strong>of</strong> full time residence credit at iscon cons in State <strong>University</strong>-<br />

La Crosse is required for graduation. Full time residence credit is earned<br />

in regular semesters or summer sessions. The last 23 credit hours to bc<br />

applied toward a degree must be earned in residence on campus."<br />

Senior College Credit<br />

All students must earn at least 40 credits in thc "300" and "400"<br />

numberecl courses, senior college courses.<br />

Forum in Contemporary Art: Seminar and Studio. June 15 to July 9, four<br />

The forum will include guest artists, film ~nalters ancl films, lecturers<br />

and slide lectures, along wit11 studio experience in painting andhisecl<br />

media. Individual investigation into current art trends will be en~pl~asizecl<br />

together with those ideas <strong>of</strong> post 1945 imagery; i.e., abstract expressionism,<br />

pop art, minimal art, post-painterly abstraction, ancl new realism.<br />

Workshop in Computer Science for Undergraduates in Business Administra-<br />

tion, Economics, Finance and Marketing. June 15 - August 6, eight weeks,<br />

8 :40 - 9 :40 a.m. daily.<br />

This nlorltshop will inform students from the areas <strong>of</strong> economics, busi-<br />

ness administration, marketing, and finance about various applications <strong>of</strong><br />

computers to their resl~ective fields. Students will receive an intensive<br />

course in data-processing techniques ancl programming, and through the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> guest lecturers, will be made an-are <strong>of</strong> how computers are used in<br />

the modern business world.<br />

Three undergraduate creclits may be earned. Those interested in earn-<br />

ing credit in economics should registel. for Econ. 374, Economic Forum<br />

Studies. Those interested in ealsning credit in computer science should<br />

register for Computer Science 360, Topics in Computer Science. Credits<br />

earned in Econ. 374 will apply to a student's major. Credits earned in<br />

Comp. Sci. 360 may be applied to a minor in Computer Science. Pre-<br />

requisites for enrollment for credit are junioi- or senior standing with a<br />

major in either Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Marlreting<br />

Economic Education Institute. June 15 - July 9, four \l7eelrs, 1 :20 - 3 :20<br />

p.m. daily. The institute will be administered in conjunction with the Center<br />

for Economic Education at \Visconsin State <strong>University</strong>-La Crosse and<br />

will be conducted by the Department <strong>of</strong> Econolnics ancl Business Administration,<br />

and the College <strong>of</strong> Education.<br />

The institute's objectives are to enhance the elementary and secondary<br />

teacher's and principal's understanding <strong>of</strong> economic issues and to assist<br />

them in adapting the subject matter to the classroom.<br />

The institute will be taught by a staff economist and a social studies<br />

educator. Guest lecturers will be utilized as appropriate. The class will use<br />

materials developed by the Joint Coullcil on Economic Education, various<br />

Centers for Economic Education, and the <strong>Wisconsin</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Public<br />

Instruction.<br />

Physical Education Clinical Forum: Psychology <strong>of</strong> Competitive Sports for<br />

Coaches. June 14 - June 25, two weelrs, 1 :20 - 5 :00 p.m., daily.<br />

The course is designed to meet the need for better understanding and<br />

attaining <strong>of</strong> optimum preparation <strong>of</strong> athletes for colnpetitive sports.<br />

Emphasis \ilill be placed on attitudes tolvard discipline, morale, desire and<br />

levels <strong>of</strong> confidence that can be gained in coaching better individual and


team achievements. Investigations cover a wide range <strong>of</strong> topics inclucling :<br />

personality <strong>of</strong> coaches and athletes; teaching techniques; use <strong>of</strong> various<br />

sltills, physiclues and aptitudes; ancl discussion <strong>of</strong> common problems <strong>of</strong><br />

contemporary athletes. A composite study will be conducted <strong>of</strong> available<br />

training programs that better prepare the athlete psychologically so that<br />

coaches can then control the timed release <strong>of</strong> the physiological output.<br />

Political Forum: The New Voters - Growth and Use <strong>of</strong> the Franchise.<br />

June 15 - July 23, six weeks, 9 :50 - 10 :50 a.m. daily.<br />

The Departments <strong>of</strong> Political Science and <strong>of</strong> Secondary Education<br />

join in <strong>of</strong>fering a summer institute. The program was developed as the<br />

prospect <strong>of</strong> a lowered voting age became marlteclly evident. The action <strong>of</strong><br />

the Congress, the Federal District Court findings in Christopher v. Mitchell,<br />

and the willingness <strong>of</strong> the Supreme Court to review Public Law 91-285<br />

(the 18 year old vote) attest to the pattern <strong>of</strong> extension. The Institute will<br />

be concerned with developing modes <strong>of</strong> teaching useful in the secondary<br />

schools in preparing the young voter for an informed use <strong>of</strong> the ballot.<br />

Enrollments are especially invited from those who plan to teach in the<br />

secondary schools, and for those now so teaching. Emphasis will be upon<br />

an understanding <strong>of</strong> the processes <strong>of</strong> enfranchising the electorate, the legal<br />

constraints upon the esercise <strong>of</strong> the franchise and, most especially, upon<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> teaching approaches appropriate to the political instruc-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> the newly enfranchisecl 18 year old voter.<br />

Guest Lecturers will include: (a) local government <strong>of</strong>ficials directly<br />

involved with voting procedures, (b) state government <strong>of</strong>ficials charged<br />

with definition <strong>of</strong> franchise, (c) <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong> the League <strong>of</strong> Women Voters,<br />

thc Urban Coalition ancl other civic groups, (d) members <strong>of</strong> the State De-<br />

partment <strong>of</strong> Public Instruction, (e) staff members <strong>of</strong> the National Council<br />

for Social Studies, ancl (f) persons involved in court tests <strong>of</strong> the new law.<br />

July 12 - July 16, one week, morning and two afternoon sessions will be hcld.<br />

Recent student activism and unrest has resulted in ever illcreasing<br />

legal complications for student personnel pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. The advent <strong>of</strong><br />

hearing panels, hearing agents, appeal boards, and the use <strong>of</strong> legal counsel<br />

by students has increased the complexity <strong>of</strong> the tasks that are the responsi-<br />

bility <strong>of</strong> student personnel administrators. The ~orlishop will be directed<br />

toward helping the student personnel pr<strong>of</strong>essional gain additional 1alon.l-<br />

edge and insight into legal procedures and ramifications as they pertain<br />

to student rights and conduct.<br />

\5'isconsin State IJniversity-I,a Crosse, is sponsoring an eight-weeks<br />

stucly and travel program in Japan under the direction <strong>of</strong> Dr. Harry J.<br />

\\'ray, East Asian specialist, Department <strong>of</strong> History. The program is <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

in cooperation with the Council on International Educational Exchange<br />

and the Association for Asian Studies.<br />

The tour will include a six-week (July 10 - August 21) program <strong>of</strong><br />

instruction at Sophia IJniversity, Tokyo. All students must register for<br />

RIodern Japanese I-Iistory (\'5'isconsin State <strong>University</strong>-La Crosse, Hist.<br />

476/676, 3 creclits) which will be taught at Sophia <strong>University</strong> by Dr. Wray.<br />

In addition, students must register for 3 credits selected from a wide range<br />

<strong>of</strong> subjects <strong>of</strong>fered by Sophia <strong>University</strong>'s bilingual staff in the arts, hu-<br />

manities, and social sciences <strong>of</strong> East Asia and the Japanese language.<br />

After two clays <strong>of</strong> orientation in Tolrgo participants will spencl five<br />

days <strong>of</strong> travel visiting historic places, gardens ancl temples and staying in<br />

Japanese inns. All participants will then have the opportunity to live with<br />

a Japanese family for five days to become acquainted more intimately with<br />

Japanese life ancl culture. Consequently, only students who are in goocl<br />

health and are willing lo enter fully into living in another culture are urged<br />

to register.<br />

During their stay at Sophia <strong>University</strong>, students will live in dormi-<br />

tories ancl have excursions in the Tokyo area and two weekend trips to<br />

scenic Nilrko's fanlous temple grounds ancl to the historic resort area <strong>of</strong><br />

Hakone. The final wcek will be devoted to independent research, travel, or<br />

additional "home stay" with a Japanese family at the student's option.<br />

The program fee is $1375 per student. It includes round trip air travel<br />

from Chicago to Tokyo, room, boarcl, tuition at Sophia <strong>University</strong>, books,<br />

tuition and fees at <strong>Wisconsin</strong> State <strong>University</strong>-La Crosse, the final week's<br />

helping to iclentify indiviclual problems in regular school classes: General<br />

Child Development, Introduction to Guidance for the Classroom Teacher,<br />

Cooperatives: History-social science and science teachers desiring to<br />

Campus Laboratory School: The Campus School will be in operation<br />

during the summer session for observation, demonstration and student<br />

teaching. It m7ill include liindergarten, primary, intermediate, and junior<br />

high school groups organized on a non-graded basis. All classes will be<br />

used for observation, demonstration a.nd, as neecled, for student teaching.<br />

Student Teaching: Opportunity for experienced elementary teachers to<br />

earn up to four credits for student teaching will be provided in Campus<br />

PIGEON LAKE FIELD STATION<br />

The <strong>Wisconsin</strong> Statc Universities sponsor summer programs at Pigeon<br />

Lake Fielcl Station near Drummoncl, Bayfielcl County, in north~vestern<br />

<strong>Wisconsin</strong>. Appropriate course work successfully com~~leted in the various<br />

camp programs by students enrollccl in the system is creclited as resident<br />

study by their respective universities.<br />

The fielcl station has been lcasecl from the U.S. Forest Service since<br />

1959 and functions as a natul-a1 laboratory in the heart <strong>of</strong> the Chequamcgon<br />

National Forest. Sixteen rustic cabins are available, each with a capacity<br />

<strong>of</strong> 6 to 8 stuclents. A dining hall, recreation hall ancl tivo classroom-labo'ratory<br />

buildings are situated near 1400 feet <strong>of</strong> shore line. Excellent facilities<br />

are available for boating, su-imn~ing ancl fishing.<br />

Dormitory rooms will be available for women and for men. Other<br />

rooms approved by the university are available to summer session students.<br />

Information concerning housing may be obtained from the Director <strong>of</strong><br />

should be filed well in advance <strong>of</strong> June 14.<br />

ACTIVITY PROGRAM<br />

The activity program includes social, cultural and recreational events<br />

planned by a faculty-student social committee. Several <strong>of</strong> these activities<br />

will be designed to utilize <strong>of</strong>f-campus natural resources <strong>of</strong> La Crosse and<br />

the Coulee Region, particularly those connected with the Mississippi River.<br />

Both gracluate and undergraduate summer session students at the Univer-<br />

sity are encouraged to talre full aclvantage <strong>of</strong> the natural environment <strong>of</strong><br />

the area, a fine tourist attraction.<br />

Cultural and recreational activities are an important part <strong>of</strong> campus<br />

social life. Cultural activities include various artists presenting lectures,<br />

exhibits, concerts, art festivals, and travelogues. Symposiums on current


issues, readings, and poetry sometimes combine with and complement<br />

international styled buffets held each Wednesday evening. Band and choir<br />

concerts are presented. Tea and c<strong>of</strong>Tee hours are planned.<br />

Strictly-for-fun activities such as feature movies, dances, bowling<br />

leagues, recreation tournaments, and music for your enjoyment and relaxation<br />

are provided. Golf and tennis tournaments, and bridge lessons are<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered if demand is sufficient.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> s~\rimming pools, gymnasium facilities, and recreation<br />

equipment are available to all summer session students and their families.<br />

Bicycle, canoe, Mississippi boat trips and regional bus tours are plannccl<br />

COULEE REGION FESTIVAL OF FINE ARTS<br />

Summer session students at the university are invited to participate<br />

in the Coulee Region Festival <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts which will include public con-<br />

certs, exhibits, lectures, and demonstrations in late July and early August.<br />

The Art, Music and Speech Departments <strong>of</strong> the university are active<br />

participants in the festival.<br />

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICE<br />

The Student Health Service is locatecl on the first floor <strong>of</strong> Grandview<br />

Facility, 1707 Main Street. Outpatient medical care including laboratory<br />

service is available. Such costs are borne by the student health portion <strong>of</strong><br />

the activity fee.<br />

Hours are from 9 :00 a.m. to 1 :00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Calls<br />

after hours and consultations with specialists are at student expense. After<br />

EXTENSION CLASSES<br />

Undergraduate and Graduate<br />

Off-campus undergraduate classes will be conducted at several central<br />

locations in the La Crosse area during both semesters <strong>of</strong> <strong>1971</strong>-72 and will<br />

meet evenings during the weeli or Saturday as preferred by enrollees.<br />

Registration for these classes \\-ill be helcl the first Saturday <strong>of</strong> the semester<br />

in the local community high school.<br />

Only courses <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>of</strong>f-campus \i7ill be classified as exte~lsion courses.<br />

Evening classes <strong>of</strong>fered on-campus will be considered part <strong>of</strong> the regular<br />

unclcrgracluate cur1.iculum. These classes are open to campus students and<br />

to <strong>of</strong>f-campus persons n-110 meet the course prerequisites.


A generous <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong> evening courses nrill be available for the <strong>1971</strong>-72<br />
