ARt school expAnsion<br />

Coming this fall, <strong>FIA</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

students and patrons will be<br />

greeted by a new light filled, easily<br />

accessible entrance upon arrival.<br />

A new sliding glass door entrance<br />

will provide students and patrons<br />

with a dedicated and convenient<br />

point <strong>of</strong> entry to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

as part <strong>of</strong> a 2,400 square foot<br />

renovation and expansion.<br />

The expansion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Art</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> is designed to maximize<br />

existing space use; install energyefficient,<br />

accessible equipment;<br />

address minor obstacles that<br />

hinder accessibility and work flow,<br />

eliminate safety hazards, and<br />

increase efficient functionality <strong>of</strong><br />

spaces.<br />

Existing spaces will be<br />

reconfigured to expand <strong>the</strong><br />

kiln area, addressing current<br />

overcrowded conditions and safety<br />

hazards. The enlarged space<br />

(1800 square feet), dedicated<br />

to <strong>the</strong> critical support functions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ceramics program, will<br />

accommodate two large downdraft<br />

kilns, including a new energyefficient<br />

Bailey shuttle kiln, seven<br />

electric kilns <strong>of</strong> various sizes and<br />

dedicated spaces for clay mixing<br />

and storage. A new 600 square<br />

foot studio will be dedicated to<br />

glaze mixing and instruction.<br />

A 900 square foot addition<br />

will serve as <strong>the</strong> welding and<br />

fabrication lab for instruction<br />

in <strong>the</strong> design, fabrication, and<br />

assemblage <strong>of</strong> metals. The <strong>Art</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>’s ability to <strong>of</strong>fer instruction<br />

techniques, and three-dimensional<br />

mediums beyond ceramics widens<br />

educational opportunities for<br />

<strong>the</strong> community. The expanded<br />

welding lab will accommodate a<br />

foundry and additional welding<br />

stations, allowing <strong>the</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

to ultimately <strong>of</strong>fer instruction in<br />

jewelry making and metal casting.<br />

Additions to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong> will<br />

maintain <strong>the</strong> interior and exterior<br />

design aes<strong>the</strong>tic <strong>of</strong> architect<br />

Frederick Fisher & Partners.<br />

Local architect, John K. Costa<br />

will provide on-site architectural<br />

services throughout <strong>the</strong> building<br />

process and contractor, Sorensen<br />

Gross Construction Services will<br />

manage <strong>the</strong> construction. The<br />

project will begin mid-April 2013<br />

with demolition and construction<br />

continuing through <strong>the</strong> summer<br />

with completion scheduled for <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> September, just in<br />

time for fall classes. Due to lack<br />

<strong>of</strong> specific resources (gas and<br />

electricity) during renovation, <strong>the</strong><br />

ceramics division will be unable to<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer regularly scheduled courses<br />

in clay. The <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong> apologizes<br />

for any inconvenience, but <strong>the</strong><br />

project must be completed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> fall in order to work within<br />

grant limitations and deadlines.<br />

Fortunately, <strong>the</strong> 7-week summer<br />

session is <strong>the</strong> shortest and<br />

minimizes down time for students.<br />

We look forward to seeing you in<br />

<strong>the</strong> fall and encourage students<br />

to consider alternative programs<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong>. In an effort to<br />

advance clay student studies in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong>, an additional 20%<br />

discount will be <strong>of</strong>fered for <strong>the</strong><br />

Summer 2013 session to students<br />

who have taken a clay class during<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir studies at <strong>the</strong> <strong>FIA</strong>. Thank you<br />

ARt school policies<br />

Registrations are valid with full<br />

payment. Register up to three<br />

days before class by phone,<br />

walk-in or mail (not by voice<br />

mail). Cash (not by mail), checks,<br />

VISA, MasterCard, and American<br />

Express are accepted. Registration<br />

confirmations are issued via email<br />

upon request. Class fees cannot<br />

be prorated.<br />

Refunds are not given after <strong>the</strong><br />

second class. A 50% charge will<br />

be withheld for cancellations made<br />

within four days prior to <strong>the</strong> start<br />

date <strong>of</strong> class.<br />

<strong>Art</strong> school policies are available in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice upon request.<br />

General Open Studio is open to all<br />

adult students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> current<br />

Jim Ames has taught<br />

watercolor for 35 years and<br />

is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American<br />

Water Color Society. He is<br />

<strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> Color Theory<br />

Made Easy and has lectured<br />

on color <strong>the</strong>ory at many<br />

leading U.S. <strong>Art</strong> <strong>School</strong>s.<br />

Rebecca Andrus has a BS<br />

in Fine <strong>Art</strong>s from Illinois State<br />

University and is pursuing her<br />

masters in Early Childhood<br />

Education at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

Michigan-<strong>Flint</strong>. She has been<br />

an artist/educator for more<br />

than 25 years.<br />

chrysa cronley holds an<br />

AA in Fine <strong>Art</strong>s from Mott<br />

Community College. She<br />

works as a custom fashion<br />

designer and has been a<br />

seamstress <strong>of</strong> fine apparel<br />

for over 30 years. Chrysa<br />

exhibits her designs locally.<br />

Alla Dubrovich has an MFA<br />

and BFA from <strong>the</strong> Moscow<br />

Pedagogical University in<br />

Moscow, Russia. She is a<br />

freelance illustrator and also<br />

teaches at Mott Community<br />

College and <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

Michigan-<strong>Flint</strong>.<br />

Alice Foster-stocum has<br />

taught at <strong>the</strong> <strong>FIA</strong> since 1982.<br />

She earned a degree at<br />

Michigan State University<br />

and studied under several<br />

renowned fiber artists. She<br />

has exhibited her work at<br />

numerous art venues.<br />

Craig Hinshaw has a BS<br />

in art education from Ball<br />

State University, and an MFA<br />

from Cranbrook Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Art</strong>. He has been teaching<br />

elementary art in Michigan<br />

schools for 30 years.<br />

Ryan Kelsey has a BS in<br />

<strong>Art</strong> Education from U <strong>of</strong><br />

M-<strong>Flint</strong>, an MA in Humanities<br />

from Central Michigan<br />

University and an MA in<br />

Educational Media Design<br />

and Technology from Full<br />

Sail University. He has been<br />

for 23 years. She welcomes<br />

students <strong>of</strong> all levels, and<br />

interacts individually to meet<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir needs.<br />

a BFA from <strong>the</strong> University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Michigan. She is a<br />

<strong>Flint</strong>-based pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

photographer. Courtney<br />

exhibits her photography and<br />

installation work regionally.<br />

Arla slogor earned her<br />

BFA in painting from <strong>the</strong> U<br />

<strong>of</strong> M-<strong>Flint</strong>. She is currently<br />

teaching painting and<br />

drawing for VSA artist-inresidence<br />
