Coordination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Junior Neighbourhood<br />

Support Program (JNSP). 16 primary schools<br />

in <strong>Glenorchy</strong> <strong>part</strong>icipated in <strong>the</strong> program<br />

culminating in a gala presentation day with over<br />

200 students, family <strong>and</strong> services in attendance.<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program is <strong>to</strong> promote a sense <strong>of</strong><br />

pride, safety, community spirit <strong>and</strong> leadership in<br />

students within <strong>the</strong>ir wider school community.<br />

Conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Glenorchy</strong> Operation Bounce Back<br />

vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft crime reduction program. Through<br />

Operation Bounce Back Council has received<br />

funding <strong>to</strong> implement a range <strong>of</strong> innovative,<br />

multifaceted highly visible community education<br />

<strong>and</strong> awareness projects aimed at reducing <strong>the</strong><br />

incidence <strong>of</strong> mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft.<br />

<strong>Glenorchy</strong> has experienced a 40% reduction<br />

in mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft over <strong>the</strong> past 7 years <strong>of</strong><br />

delivering <strong>the</strong> Operation Bounce Back program.<br />

Development <strong>of</strong> an innovative young driver’s road<br />

safety initiative targeting issues related <strong>to</strong> speed,<br />

alcohol <strong>and</strong> driver distraction.<br />

Review <strong>and</strong> update <strong>of</strong> council’s <strong>City</strong> -Wide Safer<br />

Communities Strategy.<br />

The Safer Communities Committee has identified<br />

eight (8) priority issues <strong>and</strong> has developed a<br />

2011/12 Safety in Action Plan.<br />

The committee will continue <strong>to</strong> take a leadership<br />

role with <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r development <strong>and</strong><br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> strategies over <strong>the</strong> next 12<br />

months.<br />

Priority issues identified for action during 2011/12<br />

include:<br />

1. Safety in public places – Personal Safety<br />

2. Road Safety<br />

3. Issues related <strong>to</strong> Sexual Assault – ‘Technology ’<br />

Social Networks<br />

4. Fear <strong>of</strong> Crime – Fear <strong>of</strong> Reporting Crime –<br />

Unreported Crime<br />

5. Business Crime<br />

6. Graffiti, V<strong>and</strong>alism <strong>and</strong> Litter<br />

7. Mo<strong>to</strong>r Vehicle Theft <strong>and</strong> Burglary<br />

8. Drugs <strong>and</strong> how it links <strong>to</strong> Crime<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> initiatives have been developed,<br />

implemented or are ongoing in response <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

priority issues <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y include:<br />

• Establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Northgate/Police/Safer<br />

Communities youth <strong>and</strong> community issues<br />

working group.<br />

• Completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Glenorchy</strong> <strong>City</strong> Graffiti<br />

Management Plan.<br />

• Ongoing representation <strong>and</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

road safety initiatives through <strong>the</strong> <strong>Glenorchy</strong><br />

Community Road Safety Partnership<br />

Committee.<br />

• Seventh Operation Bounce Back (OBB)<br />

Vehicle Theft Reduction Program funded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> National Mo<strong>to</strong>r Vehicle Theft Reduction<br />

Council.<br />

• The OBB initiative has involved <strong>the</strong> distribution<br />

<strong>of</strong> 100 free fully installed engine immobilisers<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>Glenorchy</strong> residents who were victims <strong>of</strong><br />

vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft or owners <strong>of</strong> older at risk model<br />

vehicles.<br />

• Screening <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 3 x 30 second vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft<br />

advertisements at both <strong>Glenorchy</strong> <strong>and</strong> Rosny<br />

Village Cinemas as <strong>part</strong> <strong>of</strong> a multi media public<br />

awareness campaign aimed at reducing <strong>the</strong> risk<br />

<strong>of</strong> being a victim <strong>of</strong> mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft.<br />

• Conduct <strong>of</strong> public awareness campaign on<br />

commercial radio.<br />

• Operation Bounce Back "reduce <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong><br />

mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft" poster on <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong><br />

Metro Bus.<br />

• Tackling vehicle <strong>the</strong>ft through public awareness<br />

<strong>and</strong> education days conducted in <strong>part</strong>nership
