School Programs: Harry Spence is a neighborhood
school that reflects typical families of the La Crosse
community. Our parent group, Parents and Teachers
Evidence of Success 2007-08
Goals:
Improve Safety and Security.
Implement survey findings from 07-08 TAPS process.
Increase student achievement in math and reading.
Improve Parent Involvement of PK-K-1 students.
Professional Development:
- Spence’s Site Team leads the staff in professional
development linked to student achievement.
- The new team approach to problem solving (TAPS)
committee led the site team this year. They surveyed the
staff reporting the top needs for in-building staff
development. Poverty and Love and Logic were the top two
requests.
- Teachers and support staff are continually taking and
teaching classes in and beyond the district and then sharing
with others in our learning community. Most of the teachers
have been trained in programs such as the Responsive
Classroom. Our school has trained ALL our staff in anti-
bullying. As a result, overall student behavior at Spence is
excellent. 97% of 3 rd graders, 98% of 4 th graders and 84%
of 5 th graders said they liked school in a recent Anti- Bully
survey.
- Last year the Spence faculty led book study groups on
gender issues, Hmong culture, creativity, and others.
Family, School, and Community Partnerships: The PTU
organizes many events throughout the year, beginning
with a fall Open House and ending with an old fashioned
carnival. They supply additional classroom money to
each teacher and support many field trips. Our
volunteer organization is so strong; it requires
volunteers to coordinate the volunteers.
- The YMCA uses the Spence cafeteria and gym to
provide a Surround Care program for working parents.
The La Crosse Police Department provides officers to
work in partnership with schools to educate children and
prevent future drug and alcohol abuse as well as gang
involvement. (D.A.R.E.)
- LaCrosse Parks and Recreation Department runs
several athletic programs at the Spence facility.
Volleyball, basketball, softball and track are offered to
children after school, and adult programs often use the
gym in the evening.
- The Boys and Girls Club of LaCrosse provides after
school tutoring for those students who need help with
their homework. Special ESOL tutoring is also available.
Evidence of Success 2007-08
Goals: The Logan staff will:
climate that recognizes and promotes the value of
diversity and strengthens our sense of history and pride
within the school.
collective efforts in advocating student achievement as it
conventions, workshops, and travel expenses in their
building budget allotments. Our school uses up to two
STANDARDS OF THE HEART – caring, success, potential
E3: Students will strive for mutual understanding as contributing
citizens in a diverse world.
E4: Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to
make effective and responsible life choices.
* Core Values/Citizenship Education – Annoucements, class meetings,
assemblies and classroom teachers all have a school theme throughout the
year in various ways. Newsletters and local media highlighted students
giving back to their school and community. Additionally, our Ranger
Renaissance School philosophy recognizes achievement of students and staff
throughout the year in a variety of ways.
* Student Services – Logan High School has 3 full-time counselors, a parttime
school psychologist, and a full-time social worker. Career Pathways
and 4 year student course planning have been a focus of our “Guidance in
the Classrooms” developmental guidance program. The Assets Building
Team is an integral part of our school and serves many functions enhancing
school climate and culture in a positive way. The focus is to build on the
positive assets in our students.
*Community Involvement/Volunteer Work: Walk-A-Thon for local
charities; community food drive, Christmas gift program for children; school
play for people with disabilities, city/area Thanksgiving dinner, Northside and
Southside community garden, blood drives, tutoring in elementary schools,
Army and much more. Our National Honor Society has been recognized at
the state level for volunteerism. Athletic and community groups also
volunteer and do service in the community. Awesome Ranger Role Models
and elementary schools (ARRM).
*Assemblies/School-Wide Efforts: Academic Pep Assembly,
manners/civility theme, periodic athletic assemblies, Ranger Renaissance
reward programs for students and staff, peer listening program, Logan
Ambassador Program to assist in mentoring new students, Building Assets in
Youth (follow-up to Benson study), and promotion of diversity and nonviolence
with monthly events. Weekly freshmen meetings focus on
transition to high school.
*Clubs, Co-Ex Activities – Logan High School offers a wide variety of cocurricular
activities. A total of 805 students participated on an athletic team
and 369 students participated in a non-athletic group during the 2007-08
school year at Logan. These numbers include counting each student for
every activity that they were involved in. Our dedicated staff members
coach or advise the majority of our co-curricular activities with the assistance
of parent support groups, college students, and volunteers. The main goal
of our coaching/advising staff is to ensure that each student leaves Logan
with a sense of belonging to a team or group, and has acquired some life
long skills, such as commitment and teamwork, that will help them to be
successful in the future. The staff at Logan agrees with the many studies
that indicate the direct correlation between co-curricular involvement in high
school and overall student performance in the areas of attendance, GPA, and
future success. This is evident by the large number of co-curricular
participants who were recognized for their academic achievement. Logan
High school had 185 student-athletes earn Academic All-Conference Awards,
which requires a 3.5 GPA and awarding of a varsity letter. In addition,
Logan had 17 different groups or individuals advance to State level
competition and 2 groups or individual advance to National competition.
