diabetes and uses his
malady to encourage
others to hold their
heads up and live
life with a positive
“People Helping
People” spirit, was
recently honored at
Roger with Vern
Arduser, Johnny
a party at the Aerie 595 home because people wanted to let him know
what a positive influence he has been in their lives.
The event was a huge success, reports Roger’s wife, Becky. “The food
was great and the attendance was very good. Roger's two brothers and
two cousins were there, as were two of our children and all three
of those he had not seen for more than 10 years.” Also present were Utah
Past State President Dale Manley and Colorado Past State Presidents John
Chido, Vern Arduser, Jess Hankins, and Larry Stinette.
Roger turned 72 on May 11. “He’s still going strong,” says Becky
Smith. “He was tired after it was all over but was very happy for the
chance to visit with all who came by.”
As this issue was going to press in late June came the sad news of
Roger Smith’s passing. “We will miss the courage he showed as an Eagle,
which became even more apparent as he fought his diabetes,” said State
Webmaster John Newman. “He was cheerful and encouraging even as
he lost his legs, letting us know it was always a good thing to pursue the
ideal of ‘People Helping People.’ Roger will be missed by one and all,
and the lessons he taught us will be remembered.”
