kayaks, camping and backpacking equipment for rent. The 5,000<br />

sq. ft. weight and fitness area is equipped with cardiovascular<br />

machines including treadmills, elliptical machines, exercise<br />

bikes and stair-climbers, free weights and selectorized weight<br />

equipment. Recreation and athletics department <strong>of</strong>fices are also<br />

located in the facility. The Clemente Center hires student staff to<br />

work in the facility throughout the year.<br />

The 500-seat W. Lansing Gleason Performing Arts Center<br />

is designed for stage plays, musical productions, scientific displays,<br />

lectures, seminars, camps and conferences. It is equipped<br />

with a complete control booth for pr<strong>of</strong>essional stage facilities,<br />

lighting and sound. The facility is equipped with both C- and<br />

KU-band, and digital satellite downlink services that can be<br />

incorporated into productions and viewed on a large screen.<br />

Situated in the central portion <strong>of</strong> the campus, the center is a<br />

cultural asset to the university and surrounding community.<br />

The Jerome P. Keuper Administration Building houses the<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> the associate provost and vice president for student<br />

affairs, financial aid, international student and scholar services,<br />

career services and cooperative education. Also located in this<br />

building are the <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> graduate and undergraduate admission.<br />

The 65,000-sq.-ft. John H. Evans Library is located in the<br />

Learning Pavilion, which also houses the Applied Computing<br />

Center, Academic Support Center and a teaching auditorium.<br />

The library’s Web-based Library Information Network (LINK)<br />

is accessible around the clock on campus and remotely. The<br />

LINK (www.lib.fit.edu) provides an online catalog, electronic<br />

journals, citation and full-text databases and electronic gateways<br />

to information resources worldwide. Electronic resources<br />

include ProQuest, FirstSearch, Ingenta, Engineering Village 2,<br />

PsycINFO, WilsonWeb, IEEE/IEE Electronic Library, Aquatic<br />

Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts, Aerospace and High <strong>Technology</strong><br />

Database, SciFinder Scholar, Biological Abstracts,<br />

Literature Resource Center, EBSCOhost EJS, ACM Portal,<br />

ENGnetBASE, MathSciNet, Mergent, CCH Internet Research<br />

NetWork and CCH Internet Tax NetWork. These resources<br />

complement the print, government documents and audiovisual<br />

collections. A classroom is equipped for multimedia presentations.<br />

Library faculty and staff <strong>of</strong>fer specialized instruction and<br />

ongoing assistance with information access.<br />

Current holdings comprise in excess <strong>of</strong> 117,000 books, more than<br />

228,000 government documents, and an extensive collection <strong>of</strong><br />

scholarly journals including close to 16,000 current print and<br />

electronic subscriptions. The library participates in the Federal<br />

Depository Library Program, which provides federally produced<br />

information to the library. Library memberships include the<br />

American Library Association, the <strong>Florida</strong> Library Association,<br />

the Central <strong>Florida</strong> Library Cooperative, the Library Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Brevard, the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and<br />

the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET). Of particular<br />

interest to undergraduate students is Research Sources and<br />

Systems (COM 2012), <strong>of</strong>fered by faculty librarians. This onecredit<br />

course familiarizes the student with a variety <strong>of</strong> research<br />

strategies, sources and services, and emphasizes traditional and<br />

electronic research tools available in the students’ major fields.<br />

The skills and knowledge gained prepare a student to effectively<br />

perform scholarly library research. Graduate students are invited<br />

to attend a three-hour graduate research workshop, <strong>of</strong>fered each<br />

semester.<br />

The seven-story Crawford Building provides space for modern<br />

laboratories, classrooms and faculty <strong>of</strong>fices for the mathematical<br />

sciences and the humanities and communication departments.<br />

Also in the Crawford Building are the <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> the vice provost<br />

for research, the associate provost for information technology, the<br />

associate provost for graduate and international programs, the<br />

dean <strong>of</strong> University College and the School <strong>of</strong> Extended Studies.<br />

In addition to these, the building houses the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the director<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong> for Energy Systems and the National Center for<br />

Hydrogen Research.<br />

The Edwin Link Building accommodates environmental sciences,<br />

oceanography and ocean engineering.<br />

The F.W. Olin Engineering Complex houses all departments<br />

<strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Engineering with the exception <strong>of</strong> the department<br />

<strong>of</strong> marine and environmental systems, which is housed in<br />

the Link Building. This three-story facility includes 26 specialized<br />

research and teaching laboratories and the 145-seat Lynn<br />

Edward Weaver Auditorium.<br />

The F.W. Olin Life Sciences Building is the home <strong>of</strong> the<br />

biological sciences programs. This two-story facility contains<br />

eight teaching laboratories and 12 research laboratories that were<br />

designed with “flex space” for customizing the areas to meet the<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> specific activities.<br />

The F.W. Olin Physical Sciences Center houses the <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

<strong>of</strong> the dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Science; chemistry, physics and<br />

space sciences <strong>of</strong>fices and laboratories; a high-bay research area;<br />

an observatory dome; and a ro<strong>of</strong>top deck area that will accommodate<br />

up to 15 additional telescopes. Construction on a 32-inch<br />

telescope, expected to be the largest in the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> and<br />

installed in the observatory dome, should be complete within<br />

18 months.<br />

The Shephard Building is the home <strong>of</strong> the science and mathematics<br />

education department.<br />

George M. Skurla Hall is the home <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Aeronautics.<br />

It is a modern two-story building that includes faculty<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices, classrooms, laboratories in air traffic control, advanced<br />

systems and computers, and a 125-seat auditorium. The flight<br />

training department is located nearby at the Melbourne International<br />

Airport.<br />

Separate academic buildings on campus are dedicated for use<br />

by the College <strong>of</strong> Business and College <strong>of</strong> Psychology and<br />

Liberal Arts.<br />

Services<br />

The Information <strong>Technology</strong> department provides services<br />

to the campus community in the areas <strong>of</strong> e-mail accounts, Web<br />

services, computing facilities, technology support and network<br />

services. In addition, the department is responsible for telephone<br />

and copy services on campus. Resources include a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

multimedia classrooms, the Applied Computing Center, the<br />

TEC Center and the F.W. Olin Production Center. Information<br />

All residence halls and on-campus apartments are wired for network<br />

and Internet access. Wireless access to the campus network<br />

is limited to select areas <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Florida</strong> Tech campus. Students<br />

are assigned e-mail accounts upon enrollment in classes.<br />
