(3 credits). An advanced study <strong>of</strong> a particular author, a group <strong>of</strong> authors, a historical<br />
literary movement or a literary theme or genre in the original foreign language.<br />

LNG 3301 ADVANCED SPANISH 1 (3 credits). Selected readings from<br />
Spanish literature and other timely topics for continued development in reading,<br />

LNG 3302 ADVANCED SPANISH 2 (3 credits). Selected readings from<br />
Spanish literature and other timely topics for development in reading, writing and<br />
speaking skills. (HU/SS) Prerequisites: LNG 2302.<br />
LNG 3401 GENERAL LINGUISTICS (3 credits). Explores the foundations<br />
<strong>of</strong> human language: phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Includes current<br />
linguistic theory, language universals and the social and biological aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
language acquisition. (HU/SS)<br />
LNG 3402 SOCIOLINGUISTICS (3 credits). Students are introduced to the<br />
sociology <strong>of</strong> language and the many ways people use language to communicate and<br />
interact socially. (HU/SS)<br />
LNG 5210 ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE (3 credits). A comprehensive<br />
overview <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> complex and intricate aspects <strong>of</strong> language and linguistic<br />
science. Major topics include sounds and sound patterns (phonology); word formations<br />
and their patterns (morphology); sentence structure (syntax); and meaning<br />
(semantics).<br />
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering<br />
MAE 1024 INTRODUCTION TO MECHANICAL ENGINEERING<br />
(3 credits). Provides an overview <strong>of</strong> the engineering pr<strong>of</strong>ession and the mechanical<br />
engineering discipline. Introduces students to engineering problem-solving<br />
methodologies and design theory and methodology. A competitive design project<br />
motivates the study <strong>of</strong> engineering graphics, computer-aided design, manufacturing<br />
techniques and s<strong>of</strong>tware tools. (CL)<br />
MAE 1025 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PRACTICUM 1 (1 credit).<br />
Students support senior student engineering design team projects by helping to<br />
develop design concepts, formalize designs through sketches and drawings, fabricate<br />
mechanical components, test component performance and other activities<br />
related to the successful completion <strong>of</strong> design projects. Corequisites: MAE 1024.<br />
MAE 1201 INTRODUCTION TO AEROSPACE ENGINEERING (1<br />
credit). Provides a broad overview <strong>of</strong> the aerospace engineering pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />
through class meetings involving formal lectures and presentations, and site/<br />
laboratory visits. Introduces the concept <strong>of</strong> aerospace design as a precursor to a<br />
competitive freshman design project to be implemented in MAE 1202.<br />
MAE 1202 AEROSPACE PRACTICUM (2 credits). Introduces elementary<br />
design concepts related to aerodynamics and aerospace structures. Includes word<br />
processing, spreadsheet analysis, computer-aided design, graphics and documentation.<br />
Group design projects are planned, analyzed, constructed, tested and<br />
reported in both lecture and lab settings. (CL) Prerequisites: MAE 1201.<br />
MAE 2024 SOLIDS MODELING AND 3-D MECHANICAL DESIGN<br />
PRINCIPLES (3 credits). Students create geometries in isometric and perspective<br />
views, free-form solids and sectioned solids to produce layouts for dimensioning/tolerancing.<br />
Computer analysis focuses on determining inertial properties and<br />
interference checking. Corequisites: MAE 3083.<br />
MAE 2025 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PRACTICUM 2 (1 credit).<br />
Continues MAE 1025 with a higher level <strong>of</strong> responsibility and more advanced<br />
requirements. Prerequisites: MAE 1025.<br />
MAE 2081 APPLIED MECHANICS: STATICS (3 credits). Includes the<br />
elements <strong>of</strong> statics in co-planar and three-dimensional systems; equilibrium <strong>of</strong><br />
particles and rigid bodies; simple structures, centroids and center <strong>of</strong> gravity; beam<br />
shear and bending moment; friction; and virtual work. Prerequisites: PHY 1001.<br />
Corequisites: MTH 2001.<br />
MAE 2082 APPLIED MECHANICS: DYNAMICS (3 credits). Analyzes<br />
kinematics and kinetics <strong>of</strong> particles, systems <strong>of</strong> particles, and rigid bodies.<br />
Discusses absolute and relative motion approaches. Employs force-mass-acceleration,<br />
work-energy and impulse-momentum methods. Prerequisites: MAE 2081.<br />
MAE 2201 AEROSPACE FUNDAMENTALS (2 credits). Introduces the<br />
theory and analysis <strong>of</strong> structures, aerodynamics, propulsion and control. Presents<br />
the theoretical advances and continuing developments from a historical perspective<br />
by stressing the roles and contributions <strong>of</strong> pioneers. Prerequisites: MTH 1002,<br />
PHY 1001.<br />
MAE 3024 COMPUTER-AIDED ENGINEERING (3 credits). Students<br />
generate finite element models from solid geometries, defining load, boundary and<br />
constraint conditions, characterizing material properties and optimizing performance.<br />
Uses computer models to perform stress, stability and dynamic analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
mechanical components and assemblies. Prerequisites: CHE 3260, MAE 2024,<br />
MAE 2082.<br />
MAE 3025 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PRACTICUM 3 (1 credit).<br />
Continues MAE 2025 with a higher level <strong>of</strong> responsibility and more advanced<br />
requirements. Prerequisites: MAE 2025.<br />
MAE 3061 FLUID MECHANICS 1 (3 credits). Introduces fluid variables;<br />
fluid statics; flow kinematics; equations <strong>of</strong> mass, momentum and energy conservation<br />
in both integral and differential formulations; similitude and dimensional<br />
analysis; the stress tensor; inviscid and viscous flows; flow in pipes; laminar and<br />
turbulent flows. Prerequisites: MAE 2082, MAE 3191, MTH 2201, PHY 2002.<br />
MAE 3062 FLUID MECHANICS 2 (3 credits). Studies high-speed compressible<br />
flow. Extends the boundary-layer theory introduced in MAE 3061 to the<br />
compressible case. Also includes normal and oblique shocks; compressible flow in<br />
ducts and nozzles; Mach waves; Prandtl-Meyer expansions; method <strong>of</strong> characteristics;<br />
unsteady 1-D flows; and conical flow. Prerequisites: MAE 3061.<br />
MAE 3064 FLUID MECHANICS LABORATORY (1 credit). Provides a<br />
working familiarity with the physical principles, measurement and flow visualization<br />
techniques in fluid mechanics. Prerequisites: MAE 2082, MAE 3191,<br />
MTH 2201, PHY 2002, PHY 2092.<br />
MAE 3083 MECHANICS OF MATERIALS (3 credits). Stress and strain;<br />
mechanical properties <strong>of</strong> materials; Hooke’s law; axial, torsion, pure bending<br />
and transverse loading <strong>of</strong> members; transformations <strong>of</strong> stress and strain; failure<br />
criteria; strain measurements; thin-walled pressure vessels; design for strength;<br />
energy methods; design for impact; column buckling and stability. Prerequisites:<br />
MAE 2081.<br />
MAE 3090 DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS (3 credits). The design<br />
<strong>of</strong> basic machine elements with an emphasis on failure prevention. Elements<br />
include screws, fasteners, connections, welded/brazed joints, springs, bearings,<br />
gears, clutches, brakes, couplings, flywheels, flexible mechanical elements and<br />
shafts. Prerequisites: CHE 3260, CHE 3265, MAE 3083.<br />
