BUS 5220 CONTRACT MANAGEMENT RESEARCH SEMINAR (3<br />

credits). Advanced research seminar devoted to study and research <strong>of</strong> topical<br />

government contract management issues. Prerequisites: BUS 5211.<br />

BUS 5307 MANAGING HUMAN FACTORS (3 credits). Gives theoretical<br />

and practical experience with human-computer interactive system design concepts.<br />

Includes next-generation user interfaces, computer task analysis, human-computer<br />

design guidelines and history, usability engineering, and testing and enhancing<br />

Web design interaction.<br />

BUS 5400 LEGAL, ETHICAL AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS OF<br />

BUSINESS (3 credits). Investigates technical, governmental and legal responsi-<br />

bilities <strong>of</strong> business in light <strong>of</strong> political, moral, social and jurisprudential considerations.<br />

Students learn to better analyze and deal with fundamental issues concerning<br />

the nature <strong>of</strong> society, both as citizens and administrators. Not for MBA credit.<br />

BUS 5410 QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR BUSINESS DECISIONS<br />

(3 credits). Presents applications <strong>of</strong> quantitative management science techniques<br />

used to analyze managerial problems. Mathematical and statistical concepts used<br />

include differential and integral calculus, linear and matrix algebra, descriptive<br />

and inferential statistics, and linear programming. Not for MBA credit.<br />

BUS 5411 STATISTICAL METHODS FOR BUSINESS (3 credits).<br />

Students learn to apply statistical methods to compare, examine and estimate the<br />

outcome <strong>of</strong> various management options. Includes statistical estimation, hypothesis<br />

testing, regression analysis, ANOVA, correlation analysis, sampling, timeseries,<br />

decision theory and use <strong>of</strong> SPSS. Prerequisites: BUS 5410.<br />

BUS 5420 MACROECONOMICS (3 credits). Concerned with the determination,<br />

at the national level, <strong>of</strong> production, employment, inflation and growth.<br />

An international perspective is taken as macroeconomic policies are examined in<br />

the presence <strong>of</strong> both goods and asset flows. Also explores how changing macroeconomic<br />

conditions affect the international business environment. Not for MBA<br />

credit.<br />

BUS 5421 MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS (3 credits). Provides an understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> the microeconomic forces that influence firm decision making.<br />

Includes competitive markets and market failure, benefit-cost analysis, demand<br />

estimation and forecasting, decision making under risk and uncertainty, production<br />

and cost estimation, and market structure analysis. Prerequisites: BUS 5411.<br />

BUS 5426 ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCE ECONOMICS (3<br />

credits). Introduces the behavioral sources <strong>of</strong> environmental problems. Includes<br />

property rights, externalities, cost-benefit analysis, depletable and recyclable<br />

resources, pollution control, population growth, sustainable development, ecotourism<br />

and environmental justice.<br />

BUS 5427 INTERNATIONAL TRADE THEORY AND POLICY (3 credits).<br />

Explores the three basic questions underlying the pure theory <strong>of</strong> trade: what<br />

are the patterns <strong>of</strong> trade; under what terms is exchange conducted; and what are<br />

the consequences <strong>of</strong> impeding the free flow <strong>of</strong> goods and services. Prerequisites:<br />

BUS 5421.<br />

BUS 5430 FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING (3 credits). Studies accounting<br />

concepts, the accounting model, measurement processes, financial statements,<br />

financial analysis, the accounting cycle, monetary and fixed assets, inventory, current<br />

and long-term liabilities and equity structures <strong>of</strong> partnerships, proprietorships<br />

and corporations. Not for MBA credit.<br />

BUS 5431 MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING (3 credits). Focuses on internal<br />

reporting to managers for use in planning and control, in making nonroutine<br />

decisions and in formulating major plans and policies. Covers cost-volume-pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

relationships, flexible budgets and standards, job order and process cost, and cost<br />

allocation and accumulation. Prerequisites: BUS 5430.<br />

BUS 5432 ADVANCED ACCOUNTING (3 credits). Provides the accounting<br />

major with intensive exposure to the subject <strong>of</strong> accounting for business combinations<br />

in a format designed to further the student’s ability to solve complex accounting<br />

problems involving worksheet techniques.<br />

BUS 5433 ADVANCED PROBLEMS AND CURRENT TOPICS (3 credits).<br />

Broadly exposes the accounting major to advanced subjects in accounting;<br />

furthers the student’s ability to analyze and present solutions to complex accounting<br />

problems, as well as interpret and apply theoretical issues; and develops the<br />

student’s communication and presentation skills.<br />

BUS 5434 ADVANCED AUDITING THEORY AND APPLICATION (3<br />

credits). Exposes the accounting major to the theory <strong>of</strong> auditing and development<br />

<strong>of</strong> audit programs; procedures for obtaining audit evidence; and auditor responsibilities<br />

under Securities and Exchange Commission requirements.<br />

BUS 5435 TAX AND FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING RESEARCH (3<br />

credits). Examines the various primary and secondary authorities available for<br />

answering questions in the area <strong>of</strong> tax and financial reporting. The main purpose is<br />

not to teach the respective rules in the areas <strong>of</strong> tax and financial reporting, but to<br />

teach students how to find authoritative answers to problems in these areas.<br />

BUS 5436 GOVERNMENTAL AND NONPROFIT ACCOUNTING<br />

(3 credits). Principles and procedures <strong>of</strong> accounting, financial reporting and<br />

budgeting for governmental and nonpr<strong>of</strong>it entities. Includes general funds and<br />

special revenue funds, capital project funds, enterprise funds, fiduciary funds, and<br />

accounting for colleges and universities, health care entities and voluntary health<br />

and welfare organizations.<br />

BUS 5437 INFORMATION SYSTEMS AUDITING/CONTROL (3 credits).<br />

Process <strong>of</strong> obtaining and evaluating internal audit evidence and communicating<br />

audit results. Includes method to assess organizational risks, controls and<br />

performance, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional auditing standards and auditors’ ethical responsibilities.<br />

(Requirement: Instructor approval.)<br />

BUS 5440 FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Studies the concepts<br />

and tools <strong>of</strong> corporate financial management and financial planning, including<br />

capital budgeting, capital structure and net working capital. Considers the importance<br />

<strong>of</strong> ethics in financial decision making. Prerequisites: BUS 5430.<br />

BUS 5446 INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Investigates the<br />

concepts, theories and techniques underlying the development <strong>of</strong> investment policies<br />

and strategies. Prerequisites: BUS 5440.<br />

BUS 5447 ENTREPRENEURIAL FINANCE (3 credits). Explores both the<br />

capital structure and financial needs <strong>of</strong> a start-up company. In addition, students<br />

gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> intellectual property, as well as the techniques used to<br />

value nonpublicly traded companies. Prerequisites: BUS 5440.<br />

BUS 5450 ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (3 credits). Presents existing<br />

research, theories and models explaining how individual and group behavior and<br />

processes shape the internal dynamics <strong>of</strong> organizations. Provides the foundation<br />

to understand contemporary debates concerning alternative organizational designs<br />

and management practices.<br />

BUS 5456 EMPLOYMENT LAW (3 credits). Examines federal regulations<br />

governing the relationship between employees and employers, and emphasizes<br />

their respective rights and responsibilities. Includes discrimination, sexual<br />

harassment, affirmative action, privacy, terminating employees, compensation and<br />

benefit regulations, family leave, and safety and health. Prerequisites: BUS 5400.<br />

BUS 5457 NEGOTIATION AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION (3 credits).<br />

Examines the management <strong>of</strong> conflict in organizations at the level <strong>of</strong> the individual<br />

and the group. Provides a background in alternatives to litigation models including<br />

negotiation, mediation, peer-review systems and arbitration. Uses simulation exercises<br />

to develop the student’s skills in applying various forms <strong>of</strong> dispute resolution.<br />

BUS 5458 LEADERSHIP THEORY AND EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT<br />

(3 credits). Teaches the leadership process and techniques used to train leaders<br />

by reading the literature, analyzing cases <strong>of</strong> corporate leadership and participation<br />

in experiential exercises that are used in leadership training. Also reinforces<br />

leadership skills <strong>of</strong> interpersonal interaction, written analysis and oral presentation.<br />

Prerequisites: BUS 5450.<br />

BUS 5460 MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS (3 credits).<br />

Addresses policy and management issues surrounding information systems in<br />

today’s enterprises: strategic use, organizational impact, project management,<br />

human resource issues and other topics germane to understanding management<br />

information systems.<br />

BUS 5461 PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (3<br />

credits). Covers the translation <strong>of</strong> product and service requirements into facilities,<br />

procedures and operating organizations. Includes product design, production<br />

alternatives, facilities location and layout, resource requirements planning, quality<br />

control and project management. Uses live case analyses. Prerequisites: BUS 5411.<br />

BUS 5465 MANAGING INFORMATION (3 credits). Explores how organizations<br />

gather, represent, process and distribute information and knowledge to<br />

employees and customers. Includes knowledge management, knowledge workers<br />

productivity, data and process modeling and data mining. Examines major issues<br />

relating to information processing and its management at the individual, group,<br />

and organizational levels.<br />

BUS 5466 MANAGING SYSTEMS (3 credits). Provides a foundation <strong>of</strong> critical<br />

issues in the design and implementation <strong>of</strong> business and information systems<br />

change. Focuses on the interdependence <strong>of</strong> information technologies and organizational<br />

characteristics by examining managing business redesign, IT leadership,<br />

managing projects and changes, and managing enterprise information systems.<br />

BUS 5467 MANAGING ELECTRONIC COMMERCE (3 credits).<br />

Examines the use <strong>of</strong> electronic commerce from business to consumer, business to<br />

business and intra-organizational perspectives to reflect the Internet and global<br />

communications networks that have emerged as powerful strategic assets, providing<br />

increased opportunity and uncertainty for business leaders.<br />

BUS 5470 MARKETING MANAGEMENT (3 credits). Examines the tools<br />

and techniques <strong>of</strong> managing marketing activities as well as an analysis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

marketing process. Emphasizes decision making, the refinement <strong>of</strong> skills needed<br />

to recognize and solve marketing problems, and effective communication <strong>of</strong> recommendations.<br />

Uses case analysis extensively.<br />

BUS 5476 STRATEGIC MARKETING (3 credits). Includes strategic<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> a firm’s activities from the marketer’s point <strong>of</strong> view. Gives attention to<br />

marketing strategy formulation, implementation and control. Assesses strategies<br />

for the functional areas <strong>of</strong> marketing (product, pricing, distribution and promotion)<br />

and their relevant application to E-commerce. Prerequisites: BUS 5470.
