45. James Woodson <strong>Bates</strong> was born August 25, 1788 in Belmont, Goochland Co., VA and<br />

died December 26, 1846 in van Buren, Crawford Co., AR. He married Elizabeth W. Moore<br />

December 12, 1827 in Crawford Co, Arkansas. She was born between 1800 and 1810 in VA<br />

and died in about 1848 in Crawford Co, Arkansas.<br />

Notes on James Woodson <strong>Bates</strong><br />

When quite young he attended the trial of Aaron Burr, at Richmond, [p.735] for treason.<br />

Congressional Record - "BATES, James Woodson, (brother of Edward <strong>Bates</strong>), a Delegate<br />

from the Territory of Arkansas; born in Goochland County, VA., August 25, 1788; attended<br />

Yale College and was graduated from Princeton College in 1807; studied law; was admitted<br />

to the bar and commenced practice in Virginia; moved to St. Louis, Mo., in 1816, and<br />
