This is a 6 part series on popular views about insurgency in Baluchistan. The poll laps all <strong>Pakistan</strong>i views and explains how<br />

the majority of <strong>Pakistan</strong>is from all over the country view the current situation in one of their four provinces. The province<br />

of Baluchistan has a small share in the nation’s population, only about 5%; but it has a large land mass of around 45% of<br />

the land area of the whole country. In part 1, we discuss nation-wide fears and apprehensions about Baluchistan<br />

insurgency; part 2 seeks views on who is to blame for the popular unrest in Baluchistan; part 3 seeks nation-wide views<br />

on economic conditions in Baluchistan as compared with the rest of the country, part 4 seeks views on claims that<br />

According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by <strong>Gallup</strong> <strong>Pakistan</strong>, <strong>Pakistan</strong>i views on who<br />

is to be blamed for insurgency in Baluchistan are sharply divided: Federal Government (27%), Baluchi Leaders<br />

(29%) and foreign powers (27%) all share it almost equally.<br />

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “In your<br />

opinion, who is more responsible for the unrest in Baluchistan and negative sentiments about central<br />

government?” Responding to this, 29% said “Baluchi Leaders”, 27% said “Federal Government” and 27% said<br />

“Foreign Powers.” However, 17% did not give a response.<br />

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by <strong>Gallup</strong> <strong>Pakistan</strong>, the <strong>Pakistan</strong>i affiliate of<br />

<strong>Gallup</strong> International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2674 men and women in rural and<br />

urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during October 07, 2012 – October 13, 2012. Error margin is<br />

estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
