BCBP – Barcoded Boarding Pass
2D-Barcode Technology at Boarding Pass Checkpoint
Enhancement of Passenger Process
As part of the initiative “Simplify the Business“,
the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is
implementing a new boarding pass technology in
cooperation with the airlines. Airlines are required
to implement the so-called “barcoded boarding
pass” (BCBP) no later than 2008 and, furthermore,
operate with 2D barcode technology in 2010.
This new technology enables passengers to book
their flights on the Internet, check in and print the
boarding pass at home. Consequently, the passenger
can go straight to the departure gate upon arriving
at the airport. On the way to the transit area the
boarding pass of the passenger is first checked
before proceeding on to the security and passport
checkpoints. The airport operators are responsible
for checking the boarding passes. Fraport AG – as
owner and operator of Frankfurt Airport – is among
the airports promoting implementation of this new
technology.
Will All Benefit
The boarding pass checkpoints at Frankfurt Airport
will be equipped with new stands by the end of 2008.
Here the boarding passes will be read and matched
with updated flight information. It will also be
checked if the passenger has access authorization
according to the regulations in §8 of the Aviation
Security Act. The danger of improper use increases
and copying becomes easier because boarding
passes will no longer be printed on special paper
but on all kinds of paper. Fraport AG developed
special software which ensures that a barcode only
enables one person to access the transit area.
Furthermore, this software informs the passenger at
the boarding pass checkpoint about any changes,
for example a different departure gate.
The data is made anonymous and stored after the
barcode has been scanned. A separate interface
will enable airlines in the future to specifically check
the passage status of individual passengers at the
boarding pass checkpoint. Information on the airport
arrival behavior of passengers, who have completed
check-in at home, is of particular interest because
these persons no longer have to use the check-in
counters in the terminals. This provides airport operators
with an improved data base for better planning
and control of terminal processes. In addition,
a higher security level can be guaranteed. The system
is planned in such a way that a switch to fully automatic
boarding pass checks is possible. Fraport AG
has applied for a patent for this system.
Technology
– 2D-barcode technology based on PDF 417
standard
– Matching of boarding passes with updated flight
information by the developed software
–Recording of passenger data for statistical purposes
Security
Application of special Fraport software preventing
improper use of the boarding pass at the airport
(block entry prevents renewed use of a barcode)
Benefits
– Higher security in regard to the requirements in
§8 Aviation Security Act for airlines implementing
the 2D-barcode technology
– Enhanced process management by increased
information standard
– Use of passenger data for planning and control
of terminal processes
