Transportation 

Transportation to many events will be provided by buses that 

will pick you up in front of the Park Inn Hotel. Please see the 

schedule for details regarding individual events. 

Public transportation in Berlin is very comprehensive and we 

recommend using it. A Tageskarte AB (day pass) costs 6.50 € 

and is good for all modes of transportation. You can buy day 

passes at the machines on the train platforms. Choose the 

Tageskarte for Zones A & B. Zone C is outside the city and only 

necessary if you are going to Potsdam or to Schönefeld Airport. 

For more information about tickets there is a BVG (public 

transportation system) office at the Alexanderplatz train station. 

Meals 

Breakfast will be provided every morning between 6.00 and 

9.00 am in the Restaurant Humboldt’s on the second floor of 

the Park Inn Hotel. Dinner (buffet-style with both meat and 

vegetarian options) will be provided as announced in the 

program schedule. There are numerous and varied lunch 

options at and around Alexanderplatz. 

Theater and Concert Tickets 

There is a concierge at the hotel who can help you book theater 

tickets. There are also box offices in the Kaufhof department 

store and at the Alexanderplatz train station. 

Dress Code 

There will be several formal events during the week including 

the Opening Ceremony and the reception at the Berlin Town 

Hall. Please dress appropriately (i.e. no T-shirts).

to the 59th Berlin Seminar! 

Dear Fulbrighters, 

The motto of this year´s Berlin Seminar and Orientation Meeting is “Fulbright networks...”. 

In an age of electronic communities and digital marketplaces the Fulbright program strongly believes that personal encounters of 

people are still the cornerstones for the authenticity and the quality of personal exchanges. The Berlin Seminar thus provides a forum 

for current and new Fulbrighters. 

This year – like every single year since 1953 - all current American Fulbrighters from Germany assemble in Berlin for some days to 

compare notes and academic and personal achievements in countless formal and informal meetings. Along the way, they learn more 

about the culture and society in Berlin, a city where, at the center of Europe, cultures meet and diversity abounds. They are 

accompanied by American Fulbrighters from 25 neighboring countries and about 200 German Fulbrighters of the coming program 

year - a Fulbright family of almost 600 getting together for 4 days. The Americans have spent roughly half of their grant time in 

Europe and have a lot to report on academic and personal matters. The Germans are eagerly looking forward to their Fulbright year and 

hope that their orientation meeting in Berlin will offer them academic and personal guidance. 

While the two groups convene at times in separate locations to participate in the mid-year meeting (American Fulbrighters) or the 

orientation meeting (German Fulbrighters) they will spend a substantial part of the cultural and academic program together, providing 

them with a chance to learn from each other, to actively contribute to sessions together, and to enjoy the ‘wining and dining’, music 

performed by Fulbrighters and a farewell party as a unique opportunity to establish and foster newly-formed Fulbright networks. 

We appreciate the attendance and active participation of so many of you in the Berlin Seminar 2013 – the living proof that the 

Fulbright program is not only a great idea but that it prospers and expands through all committed participants. The Berlin Seminar is 

clearly the highlight of our 2013 activities, and the German-American Fulbright Program is honored and proud to welcome you to this

Association of Friends & Sponsors of the German-American 

Fulbright Program e.V. 

Founded in 1996 in Berlin, the Association of Friends & 

Sponsors of the German-American Fulbright Program supports the 

transatlantic dialogue between Germany and the USA under the 

auspices of the Fulbright program with grants provided for nontraditional 

Fulbright activities. For this purpose, the Association 

raises money through membership fees as well as sizeable donations 

of supportive corporations, individuals and Fulbright alumni. The 

allocation of funds and the selection process of the Association’s 

grantees follow the guidelines of the Fulbright Commission in 

Berlin. Currently, the program funds aim to support students from 

diverse and under-privileged backgrounds as part of the ‘Diversity 

Initiative of the German-American Fulbright Commission’. It 

finances a five-week long stay at the University of Kentucky, where 

the grantees attend regular undergraduate-level courses at the 

beginning of the fall term. Successful applicants must not only 

have a migration background but also have passed the German 

Abitur (high school) and demonstrated social commitment. 

Among their families and friends they normally are the first ones to 

experience the American way of life on a U.S. campus. They return 

with a positive, multi-faceted image of the USA and its academic 

institutions, i.e., impressions which barely could have been 

generated by any other means. 

Peter Boag earned his PhD in history at the University of Oregon 

in 1989. He has served on the faculty at Idaho State University, the 

University of Colorado-Boulder, and currently Washington State 

University where he holds the Columbia Chair in the History of 

the American West. While earlier in his career he focused on environmental 

history, in the past couple decades he has concentrated 

on the history of gender and sexuality. He is the author of three 

books and a variety of essays, articles, and chapters. 

Björn Böhning was born in Lübeck on 2 June 1978, where he 

graduated from Carl-Jacob-Burckhardt-Gymnasium (high school) 

in 1998. After graduation, he did a year of alternative service (in 

lieu of military service) at a work center for people with disabilities. 

Mr. Böhning was politically active at an early age and was elected 

deputy chair of the Schleswig-Holstein state Juso (Young Social 

Democrats) organization in 1997. In 1999 he moved to Berlin to 

enroll in the renowned Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science at 

the Freie Universität, graduating with a degree in Political Science in 

2004. He was elected deputy chair of the national Juso organization 

in 2001 and its chair three years later. Mr. Böhning was a member 

of the SPD party executive until 2011. He headed the Political 

Policy and Planning Office at the Berlin Senate Chancellery as of 

2007 and has been Head of the Senate Chancellery of the federal 

state of Berlin since December 2011. Björn Böhning is the father 

of one son. 

Christoph Gwosć studied Public Finance and Economic Policy 

at the Gerhard-Mercator-University of Duisburg (DE), where he 

graduated with a Master of Economics in 1999. From 1999 to 

2005 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for European 

Economic and Social Policy at the University of Duisburg-Essen 

(DE). During this time he also had several research periods and 

teaching assignments at the University of Illinois at Urbana- 

Champaign (USA), the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf 

(DE) and the Warsaw School of Economics (PL). 

From 2005 to 2006 he had lectureships for International Business, 

Microeconomics and European Economic Policy at 

Jacksonville University, Florida (USA) and the Carinthia University of 

Applied Sciences (AT). Since 2007 he is working as 

researcher at the HIS-Institute for Research on Higher Education in 

Hanover (DE). There he has been involved in various national and 

international empirical projects. Currently he is working on the 

EUROSTUDENT project, a large-scale project intended to 

collate comparable data from 27 European countries on the social 

and economic conditions of student life in Europe. Alongside his 

work at HIS he is assistant lecturer for Economics at the Zeppelin- 

University Friedrichshafen (DE). 

Lucian Kim was born in Charleston, Illinois. He earned a B.A. 

in geography and foreign languages from Clark University, studied 

journalism at the University of California at Berkeley and 

completed the master’s program in nationalism studies at Central 

European University. He first worked as Berlin correspondent for 

The Christian Science Monitor, covering Germany, Eastern Europe 

and Central Asia. Later he moved to Moscow, where he worked 

for The Moscow Times and Bloomberg News. He is now back in 

Berlin. He blogs for the International Herald Tribune and is 

exploring new journalism platforms for the post-paper era. 

Florian Kühnel studied Electrical and Information Technology 

at FH Rosenheim and finished with a Dipl.-Ing. (FH) in 2005. 

During that time he won a Fulbright Scholarship to the University 

in Florida, where he graduated in 2006 with a Master’s degree 

in Electrical and Computer Engineering. While in the U.S., Florian 

Kühnel focused on Control Theory and Artificial Intelligence. 

Directly after his studies, Florian Kühnel started his career at 

BMW with a focus on automotive sensors. Further projects included 

developing a central chassis ECU and managing its SW. 

Florian Kühnel is now working on the electronic stability and 

regenerative braking system of BMW’s future range of electrical 

and hybrid cars. Florian Kühnel joined the German Fulbright 

Alumni Association shortly after his Fulbright year. He has been 

the association’s regional coordinator in Munich for the past five 

years organizing various activities from cultural to social to outdoor. 

Since the German Fulbright Alumni Association’s general 

meeting in February, Florian Kühnel heads the organization as 

its president and feels great joy working with fellow alumni and 

current grantees.

Shane Thomas McMillan is a freelance photo- and visual 

journalist currently living in Berlin. He studied journalism, 

German, and international development studies at the University 

of Montana. In that time he worked as a photographer, and later 

as photo-editor, for several publications. Immediately following 

university he moved to Berlin on a Fulbright where he worked 

for the Associated Press and on several documentary film projects. 

Shane’s work is now firmly planted at the intersection of human 

rights, poverty, and education. His work has been featured in the 

New York Times and The Guardian. He is also the co-founder of 

Allversity.org. 

Özcan Mutlu is the spokesperson for education and migration 

policies for the Green Party - Bündnis/90 Die Grünen - in the 

Berlin House of Representatives (Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus) 

since October 1999. After a vocational training at the Technical 

University Berlin, he visited the College of Technology and earned 

his Master’s Degree in Communication Engineering in 1993. 

During his studies Öczan Mutlu worked as intern at the University 

of Nebraska at Omaha. In 1990 he became a member of the Green 

Party and since 1995 he has been active in education, migration 

and environmental policies. He also became a member of various 

Green party committees. Mr. Mutlu is also a member of several 

transatlantic institutions such as the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation, 

Bertelsmann-Foundation, Marshall-Memorial-Fellow (GMF) and 

Young-Leader Atlantik-Brücke e.V.
