with the spies when he wished to make war upon<br />

the kings of the earth. And queen Candace<br />

recoraized him when he came to her with the<br />

spies, and she laid hold of him and said unto<br />

him, "Thou thyself art <strong>Alexander</strong> the king, who<br />

"hast captured the [p. 383] whole world, but thou<br />

"art thyself this day captured by a woman." And<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> said unto her, "Thou hast captured me<br />

"by thy knowledge, and clever understanding, and<br />

"wisdom; from this day forward I will protect<br />

"thee and thy children from all harm, and I will<br />

"make thee my wife." And when Candace heard<br />

these words she bowed down at his feet, and made<br />

a treaty of peace with him, and he took her to<br />

wife. And it came to pass after these things<br />

that the Abyssinians submitted to him.<br />

And when <strong>Alexander</strong> was dying he divided<br />

his kingdom among his four friends who had been<br />

his allies in the war. Philip, his elder brother,<br />

took the country of Macedonia and became king<br />

therein, and over all Europe also; and <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

made Ptolemy, who was surnamed Lagus, king<br />

over the country of Egypt.
