Now when <strong>Alexander</strong>, the son of Philip the<br />

Macedonian, had become king, he founded the<br />

great city of Alexandria in the country of Egypt,<br />

and he called it Alexandria after his own name<br />

now the old name of the place was in the language<br />

of the Egyptians "Rakoti." And after this he<br />

made war against the country of Persia. And<br />

he came to the border of Europe {?), and founded<br />

there a place wherein to gather together his<br />

soldiers and all his armies; here he eave much<br />

money to the generals of his army, and to all<br />

his governors, and to the multitudes of his soldiers<br />

and he called that place Chrysopolis, and thus it<br />

is called by all the Byzantines. And when Alexan-<br />

der made war against Persia, he slew multitudes<br />

of Darius' army and exterminated them. Then<br />

he took all Darius' kingdom and ruled over it,<br />

and he also captured his daughter, who was called<br />

Roxana, and she was a virgin, and he married<br />

her and did no evil unto her. And he treated<br />

graciously the Abyssinian queen, whose name<br />

was Candace, because of her wisdom and under-
