And it came to pass that after <strong>Alexander</strong>, the<br />

son of Philip the Macedonian, who was the first<br />

to reign in Greece, having come forth from Keten'<br />

had slain Darius, the king of the Medes and<br />

Persians, he made many wars, and captured<br />

strongholds, and slew the kings of the earth. And<br />

he went through to the ends of the earth, and<br />

he took spoils of many nations, and the earth<br />

was quiet before him. And he gathered together<br />

hosts and mighty armies, and his heart was exalted ;<br />

and he captured the countries of the Syrian nations<br />

and kingdoms of the Gelaweyan, and they became<br />

tributary unto him. And after these things he<br />

lay sick upon his couch, and knowing that he<br />

should die, he called unto him his officers who<br />

were of noble birth and who had been brought<br />

up with him from his childhood, and divided his<br />

kingdom among them while he was yet alive.<br />

So <strong>Alexander</strong> reigned twelve years and died.<br />
