I. MACCABEES I. I — 6.
And it came to pass that after Alexander, the
son of Philip the Macedonian, who was the first
to reign in Greece, having come forth from Keten'
had slain Darius, the king of the Medes and
Persians, he made many wars, and captured
strongholds, and slew the kings of the earth. And
he went through to the ends of the earth, and
he took spoils of many nations, and the earth
was quiet before him. And he gathered together
hosts and mighty armies, and his heart was exalted ;
and he captured the countries of the Syrian nations
and kingdoms of the Gelaweyan, and they became
tributary unto him. And after these things he
lay sick upon his couch, and knowing that he
should die, he called unto him his officers who
were of noble birth and who had been brought
up with him from his childhood, and divided his
kingdom among them while he was yet alive.
So Alexander reigned twelve years and died.
