his mother, for he knew that she loved him ex-<br />

ceedingly, and that because of her love her heart<br />

could not be comforted.<br />

CHAPTER XXIX.<br />

Now there was a certain friend of <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

whose name was Komsat, and he was one of the<br />

generals of the hosts of the governors of Mace-<br />

donia, and he loved him exceedingly by reason<br />

of the beauty of the life which he led for the sake<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> of God Almighty, .... and he was wise in his counsel<br />

and KfimsAt,<br />

and mighty in war. And the two men loved each<br />

other exceedingly, and they were wont to converse<br />

together on the things which were for their own<br />

benefit, and they edified many men by their words<br />

and those who hearkened unto them, for as is the<br />

prince even so is his attendant. Now <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

the king loved the works of righteousness, and<br />

all his followers also loved good works; they fed<br />

the hungry, and clothed the naked, they judged<br />

righteously, and they made the poor man rich.<br />

In the days of <strong>Alexander</strong> the king righteousness<br />

shewed itself and was revealed, and no man at<br />

that time evilly oppressed another; and as for<br />

those who were without, he removed every image<br />

and idol from out of his kino'dom.<br />

And it came to pass that when Komsat, the<br />

ally of <strong>Alexander</strong> the king, saw that he was nigh<br />

to die, he wept on the pillow of <strong>Alexander</strong> the<br />

king, and spake, saying, "Woe is me. Art thou
