CHAPTER XVIII.<br />

And it came to pass that when <strong>Alexander</strong> the<br />

king heard these things he wept before God Al-<br />

Aiexander's mighty, and said, "O God, remember me in Thy<br />

p^^y"-<br />

"mercy, and keep me so that I become not a<br />

"habitation for the Devil; but if Thou wilt not<br />

"keep me [from this], then take back my soul be-<br />

"fore the days of my appointed time come. And<br />

"preserve me for a habitation for the Holy Spirit<br />

"so that I become not an abode of the Devil; and<br />

"keep my soul and my body pure in Thy fear."^<br />

And the Holy Spirit answered and said unto<br />

him, "Fear thou not, [p. 304] but keep the doors<br />

"of thine heart, for thine heart is My dwelling-<br />

"place, and I will preserve it; only as far as thou<br />

"art able thou must keep it thyself And speak<br />

"on behalf of others that it may become a thing<br />

"perfected in righteousness, and the souls of many<br />

"shall be made to live through thee and they shall<br />

"not become a dwelling-place for the Devil and for<br />

"his fiends and demons. And they shall work re-<br />

"pentance and wisdom upon earth, for repentance<br />

"is great wisdom if men work it before they die,<br />

"and their sins shall be put away from them, and<br />

"they shall inherit glory, together with My chosen<br />

"ones at My second coming."<br />

And <strong>Alexander</strong> answered and said with tears,<br />

"O God, Thou camest the first time to Abraham<br />
