"thou, O Alexander the king, enter into this city,
Text of the "[p, 278] to tcll the talc to him that cometh in,
inscription. ... . . _,, ....
"for this our city is filled with possessions of great
"price and with violence. And in order that thy
"followers may not perish command them that
"for near the gate is a house, and between the
"house and the causeway are a place of suffocation (?),
"and a gulf and an abyss; and whosoever falleth
"on the ground shall not be able to rise up^ again
"before his bowels are poured out and his bones
"shattered in pieces. Inside is a very narrow
"passage and a block which cannot be pierced by
"instruments of steel, and above it is a great stone;
"these are the things which destroy men's lives.
"And in this city are a precious stone gotten from
"the sea, and jewels, and gems, and things of
"great price, and gold is like brass and silver
"like lead for abundance. But when the wrath
"of God Almighty came upon us, our wealth and
"riches availed us naught, and they brought us no
"salvation; for the judgment of God Almighty
"is righteous." And with these words the in-
