"in the track of that which hath gone before. Do<br />

"thou, then, O lady, array thyself in patient en-<br />

"durance as with strong: armour of iron. And<br />

"fear thou not, neither be dismayed, and grieve<br />

"not, but make thou a great feast and bid [all]<br />

"people to be gathered together to thee, and when<br />

"they have assembled let a herald go round about<br />

"[among them], saying, 'Let no man who hath been<br />

"attacked by sorrow taste of this food;' and then<br />

"shalt thou know that consolation lieth in my<br />

"words." And he sealed the letter and sent it to<br />

his mother. And he commanded Philemon, the<br />

general of his host, to hide his death [from his<br />

mother], and to travel [to her] with all speed; and<br />

after a few days he died and came to his fathers. Death of<br />

Glory be to God Almighty, the Living God, Who<br />

dieth not.<br />

And it came to pass that when the letter<br />

reached his mother [p. 255] she made a feast even The feast of<br />

as he had said, and she bade [all] men to come to<br />

it and those upon whom sorrow had not come to<br />

partake of it, but no man drew nigh to partake<br />

thereof; then she knew of a certainty that there<br />

was no man in the world who was without sorrow.<br />

And Philemon, the captain of the host, made<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong>'s body ready for burial, and he pre-<br />

served it with aloes,^ and laid it in a golden coffin, <strong>Alexander</strong><br />
