The writer of this history saith:—And it came<br />

to pass that when <strong>Alexander</strong> had become king<br />

over all kingdoms, from the east even unto the<br />

west, all kings submitted unto him, and became<br />

subject unto him. And his soldiers amounted in <strong>Alexander</strong>'s<br />

number to six hundred thousand horsemen, andcquests"<br />

he founded two hundred great cities, some of which<br />

are in the east, and some of which are in the<br />

west, and he founded a city on the Egyptian sea<br />

and called it Alexandria, after his own name; and<br />

he forded rivers, and made rafts, and passed over<br />

seas. He blotted out forty and four kings, and<br />

obtained dominion over their kingdoms. And he<br />

turned aside to Babylon to see the works there,<br />

and to direct the affairs of the city, and they gave not to suy<br />

him poison to drink. It is said that the man who ^''^" "'<br />

poisoned him was he who had been appointed<br />

prefect of Macedonia by <strong>Alexander</strong>, and that he<br />

did so because <strong>Alexander</strong>'s mother had written<br />

and sent to her son a letter of accusation against
