which were at that time frozen. And they lighted<br />

upon a second army of Greeks, and a great battle<br />

was fought, and the Greeks overcame the Persians,<br />

army in full flight. And it came to pass that when<br />

they were in the middle of the river, the ice melted,<br />

and a great number of them were drowned; but<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> a letter of entreaty, and he spake unto<br />

him, saying, "I will give thee much wealth, but I<br />

"require thee to give back to me my wife and<br />

"my daughter, and not to lay waste my country."<br />

And when <strong>Alexander</strong> had read his letter he said,<br />

"If Darius escape me, behold his possessions will<br />

"be left, and if I take him all his riches will fall<br />

"to me.'" Then <strong>Alexander</strong> abode there until the<br />

winter had passed, for the cold was exceedingly<br />

great.<br />
