Then' <strong>Alexander</strong> departed from the Sanctuary <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

Noblos,' and Sanballat the Samaritan received<br />

him and brought him into his house, and he en-<br />

treated him, and all his soldiers, and [p. 242] friends<br />

with great kindness, and he brought to him rich<br />

presents without number, besides gifts of most<br />

wonderful things. And Sanballat entreated <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

to give him permission to build a sanctuary on<br />

Mount Karbarim,^ which is called Tur-bazel.<br />

The author of this book saith:—And Sanballat<br />

wished to build a sanctuary for Manasseh, his<br />

daughter's husband, who was a priest in the<br />

Sanctuary of the House of God Almighty, and<br />

who had married the daughter of Sanballat. Now<br />

at that time the elders of the Jews had commanded<br />

those who had married strange wives, who did<br />

not belong to their kin, to separate themselves<br />

from their wives, and they [all] accepted their<br />

orders and separated themselves from them, except<br />

Manasseh the priest who refused to separate himself<br />
