"there shall be a memorial to thee before God,<br />

"the Glorious and Exalted, at all times." And<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> was pleased with this thing, and he<br />

made much wealth to be brought to the house<br />

of God Almighty, and he gave to the priests<br />

abundant tithes. Then <strong>Alexander</strong> said unto the<br />

priests, "Make enquiry of God Almighty the most<br />

"High concerning myself and concerning my desire<br />

"to make war against Darius, and whether it is<br />

"the wish of God Almighty or not; [if it is not]<br />

"I will return to my own country." The [high]<br />

priest said unto him, "Return to thy way, O king,<br />

"for God Almighty is with thee, and He will<br />

"make thee to vanquish Darius in his kingdom."<br />

Then he brought forth to him [the Book of] DanieP<br />

the prophet—on whom be peace!— and informed<br />

him of the matter of the ram which he saw, which<br />

pushed with his horns against whosoever drew<br />

nigh unto him on every side. And he spake con-<br />

cerning the coming of the he-goat which attacked<br />

the ram with a horn and butted him, and broke<br />

his horns, and threw him on the ground, and<br />

stamped upon him with his feet, and overcame<br />

him, and the ram could find no deliverance from<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> the goat. Then the [high] priest said unto <strong>Alexander</strong>,<br />
