he had come forth from the sea he took the<br />

ships to pieces with which he loaded camels for<br />

transport.<br />

The writer of this chronicle saith:—<strong>Alexander</strong><br />

ruled from the East even unto the West, and he<br />

abolished thirty and five kings, and obtained the<br />

dominion over their kingdoms, and the soldiers<br />

in his army amounted in number to [p. 234] six<br />

hundred thousand horsemen. And he founded a<br />

city in the country of Egypt, and called it Alexandria Founding of<br />

after his own name. Then he turned aside to<br />

Babylon to impose tribute upon it, and it is said<br />

that the orovernor of Macedonia sent his servant<br />

to <strong>Alexander</strong> to make him drink poison and to<br />

kill him, because of the evil which he had done<br />

unto him. Then this young man went and made<br />

a compact with the chief cup-bearer, who gave<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> the poison to drink mixed in his drink <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

when he was drunk, and he drank it. And when''°'^°"^ '<br />

he perceived that he must die he sent a letter to<br />

his mother, saying, "Know thou, O lady, that we<br />

"in the world are like unto this fleeting day which<br />

"succeedeth yesterday. Sorrow not, but make a<br />

"grreat feast and gather tosj-ether all sorts of men<br />

"and say unto them, Whosoever hath been attacked His letter to<br />

"by sorrow let him not eat of this repast. Then ^'"^^'<br />

"solation in my words." And he sealed the letter<br />

and sent it to his mother, and he ordered Philemon,<br />
