of Darius were more numerous than were his own.<br />

Then <strong>Alexander</strong> sent a herald round about amone<br />

his soldiers, saying, "Whosoever shall slay Darius,<br />

"I will honour him above all my soldiers, and<br />

"above the governors of my kingdom." Now the<br />

soldiers of Darius heard this [also], and two of<br />

his servants, whose father Darius had slain because<br />

of his evil deeds, rose up against him and slew<br />

him in the fight; and they fled to <strong>Alexander</strong> and<br />

informed him of this thing. And it came to pass<br />

that when Darius was smitten his army was broken.<br />

Defeat of aud the soldiers fled, leaving him prostrate on the<br />

ground, bathed in blood. Then <strong>Alexander</strong> and<br />

his troops came on until they arrived at the place<br />

where Darius was, and when he saw him lying<br />

prostrate upon the ground, he came down from<br />

his horse and sat by the side of his head, for as<br />
