Now the writer of the present chronicle saith<br />

that Aristotle, the sage, did not travel with<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong>, but Philemon, the wise man, who waspwiemon<br />

one of his envoys, went with him to carry out ^^^"^''*'<br />

and to arrange for him all these matters which<br />

we have described. Now Philemon was a wise<br />

and most excellent man, and he made to go forth the<br />

orders, that is to say the doctrine, of <strong>Alexander</strong>'s<br />

guardian, who commanded him, when any of these<br />

matters was too hard for him, to write and send<br />

a letter to him, and [who promised] to give orders<br />

about what should be done. And it came to pass<br />

that, when <strong>Alexander</strong> saw that he was wise in all<br />

things, he set him over all his kingdom, and he<br />

administered it well.<br />

Then <strong>Alexander</strong> gathered together all his soldiers, <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

and set out to do battle with Darius, the king ofpergj""<br />

Persia. And when Darius heard that <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

had come to him he fortified for himself five<br />

strongholds, and placed a general, who had with<br />

him twelve thousand men, over each; and a turn'<br />

at duty only came to each man every five days,<br />

so great was the number of men in his army.<br />

And when <strong>Alexander</strong> heard that he had fortified<br />

himself in strongholds he rejoiced with an ex-<br />

ceedingly great joy, and he sent unto him, saying,<br />

"It is not meet and right for thee to entrench<br />

"thyself within strongholds, and to carry on a war<br />
