joy, and he was pleased at this [order] and shewed<br />

himself joyful, and he did homage to the king<br />

even unto the ground, and prayed unto him.<br />

Then he who was standing there, that is to<br />

say, <strong>Alexander</strong>, who had called himself by the<br />

name of Antigonus, the general,^ said, "Since thou<br />

"hast thus commanded, O king, I will go with<br />

"him and will deliver him, but appoint for me<br />

"horsemen [p. no] who shall be under my authority.<br />

The expedi- "and who shall obey all my orders." So he told<br />

starts, ^g- £-^^ j^j^ thirty 3 thousand horsemen.<br />

And* Antigonus, that is to say, <strong>Alexander</strong>, went<br />

out from his presence, having Candaules the son<br />

of Candace with him, and he marched with them<br />

until they drew nigh unto the country of Karamin.<br />

Now it was still daylight, and the ambassador<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> said unto the son of Candace, "Let<br />

"us hide ourselves here in this desert place until<br />

"the night fall, lest the people [of the city] see<br />

"us and tell their friends, and they slay the woman<br />

"before we arrive [there], and we shall not toil in vain.<br />
