"to him each day that he may not lay waste our<br />

"country,' for he devoureth everything which<br />

"travelleth by the river." And I said, "Where<br />

"do they bring the two oxen to him, that he<br />

"may eat them.''" And they said unto me, "O<br />

"king, two of our men are appointed for this<br />

"work, and they rise up early in the morning and<br />

"set the two oxen in their place for him before<br />

"he cometh forth from his dwelling, and they<br />

"leave them on the bank of the river; then they<br />

"return and ascend that high mountain. And when<br />

"the god goeth forth from his dwelling to [p, 94]<br />

"the river, he findeth the two oxen and devoureth<br />

"them." And I said unto them, "Doth he do thus<br />

"in one place or everywhere?" Now I asked this<br />

question concerning him because he was [held by]<br />

the people of the whole country at that time to<br />

be a devil, whom they worshipped, and [they<br />

thought that] he fought for them and for their<br />

Then I asked them to lead me to the place <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

wherein the god lived, and I took guides with ^^Jt hkn.<br />

me, and I went to him. And when we arrived<br />

at his dwelling-place I commanded the people of<br />

the city to bring out to me two oxen, and I set<br />

them where they were wont to set the oxen for<br />
