EPISTLE OF PORUS TO ALEXANDER. I 1<br />

"knowledge nor understanding in them, and they<br />

"are unable to concoct plans against men either<br />

"by their strength or by their intelligence, and<br />

"therefore we vanquish and overcome them by<br />

"weapons, and by horses, and by men, and by<br />

"the help of God Almighty."<br />

And it came to pass that when he had spoken<br />

these words unto his soldiers they became of good<br />

courage, and they rejoiced within themselves.'<br />

Then <strong>Alexander</strong> wrote a letter to Porus in answer<br />

to his letter, saying:<br />

"From <strong>Alexander</strong>, the Two-horned, the servant Aiexand er s<br />

"of God Almighty, to Porus, the king of India, p^rus.<br />

"[Greeting]. Behold, thou hast written unto me<br />

"concerning what I wish to do : now I wish to<br />

"meet thee speedily [p. 66], and behold I will<br />

"march into thy country with all haste. And thou<br />

"hast written unto me in thy letter saying that the<br />

"things which are coveted by [foreign] kings, and<br />

"which [their] eye[s] have never seen, are to be<br />

"found in thy country, therefore do not thou blame<br />

"[foreign] kings when they come to thy country,<br />

"for therein are the things which kings love, and<br />

"the things wherewith is satisfied the delight of<br />

"their souls. And again, thou hast mentioned that<br />

"there is in thy land food which is suitable for<br />

"kings, and behold, we love these things, and the<br />

"desire of our souls is towards the things in thy<br />
