"of my army and the Persians shall be the objects<br />

"of thy care, for they are noble and capable men."<br />

And <strong>Alexander</strong> undertook [to do] all that Darius<br />

asked him.<br />

And <strong>Alexander</strong> spake once again to Darius, <strong>Alexander</strong><br />

saymg ,<br />

"i have one request to make unto thee, marry rox-<br />

and Darius said unto him, "What is it?" Alexan-""^'<br />

der saith unto him, "I wish to marry thy daughter<br />

"with thy will and good pleasure,"^ Darius said<br />

unto him, "Marry her, and may thy seed which<br />

"shall arise after thee be like unto thee." And<br />

<strong>Alexander</strong> did marry the daughter of Darius in<br />

the presence of the whole army which was^ there.<br />

And again Darius laid <strong>Alexander</strong>'s hand upon his<br />

mouth, and saying, "Thou hast added my life unto<br />

"thy hand," he died.<br />

Then"* <strong>Alexander</strong> ordered them to bring a splen- Death ofDa-<br />

all manner of sweet scents, and to make for Darius<br />

a coffin, wrought with gold and studded with pre-<br />

cious stones, such as was suitable for a king.<br />

gives his daughter to <strong>Alexander</strong> to wife; see Pseudo-Callis-<br />
