New Lineo
Silence, seats, action!
New Lineo Cinemas, a leader in the upscale leisure and entertainment market, is
breaking with tradition and offering moviegoers a new kind of cinema experience. One
of the distinctive features of its cinemas, located in Portugal (Lisbon, Alfragide, Cascais,
Leiria, Beloura, Viseu and Sintra) and Israel (Tel Aviv, Ramat HaSharon, and Rishon), is
that seating becomes an active element that allows patrons to interact with the movie
rather that just watching what’s happening on the screen.
Dynamic halls, outfitted with specially designed seats for motion and special effects,
make moviegoers feel like they’re the protagonists of the story. Scary rooms
are used exclusively for horror films: decor, lighting and digital technology are all
used to create an intense and immersive experience for patrons. The Tango model
seats used are equipped with a vibrating system and speakers installed in the headrest.
Romantic rooms offer an atmosphere of elegant intimacy, allowing patrons
to keep all their senses alert.
The conventional cinemas also have special features, including seats with individual
desks so the auditoriums can be turned into conference rooms to increase the
profitability of the space. And the fortunate patrons admitted to the VIP cinema will
find themselves seated on Kimberley chairs, which offer generous dimensions and
all the comfort anyone could dream of, with a reclining backrest and natural leather
upholstery.
Glass Cinema: stars at audience members’ feet
The most striking innovation at the new Cinema City in Rishon is the Glass Cinema.
Films are projected through a transparent floor to produce a spectacular enveloping
effect that immerses audience members in the action. ■
Norsk Kinodrift AS
Cinemas in northern Europe
focus on innovation
Alejandro Figueras and Ivar Halstvedt, CEO of Norsk Kinodrift AS
A number of Norwegian businesspeople visited Figueras’ headquarters to find out more about the
latest trends in cinema installations and production processes aimed at implementing leading-edge
technology in cinemas. The outcome of the meeting was an agreement between Figueras and Norsk
Kinodrift to jointly develop the firm’s future cinemas and focus on taking an enterprising approach. The
Tango 5106 model, previously used at Saga Kino, has been selected for the upcoming Askim Kino
and Sarpsborg Kino projects. ■
Cinema with five senses:
4-D, 5-D and 6-D
The virtual world has become a thing of the past. A combination of ingenuity and teamwork has made it
possible to transform a trip to the cinema into an intense experience patrons can feel on their own skin.
The experience is more like a fun-fair ride than an old-fashioned night at the cinema; moviegoers open their
senses to a fourth, a fifth and even a sixth dimension. Seats vibrate or tip as the script dictates, fire blasts
of air, spray water, scents, smoke, laser rays, and more. Fiction becomes reality and patrons go from being
onlookers to active participants in the movie. Cinemas like those at Madame Tussauds in London and
Barcelona’s Tibidabo amusement park let patrons experience movies with all five senses. ■
Imax Intech Planetarium
“One small step for man, one giant leap for audience members”
Astronauts are no longer the only ones who can know what it’s like to float in space. This is the experience
the Imax Intech Planetarium in Winchester (in southern England) is using to draw in visitors in its
efforts to disseminate scientific knowledge. The only requirements are a stomach for strong sensations
and an appetite for action. In the state-of-the-art auditorium, audience members recline on 5036 Top
chairs and are launched into the solar system to visit a black hole or see firsthand exactly what’s happening
above them that very night. ■
Club Lux auditorium, Barnasud
Movies à la carte
LUX CINEMAS has opened a new cinema complex at the Barnasud shopping centre
in Gavá. The facility boasts 1275 seats, seven screens, and state-of-the-art technology,
making it one of the most modern and innovative complexes in Catalonia.
There are many reasons why the new complex represents a revolution in the world of
cinema. The Club Lux auditorium, for example – outfitted with comfortable 9113 Megaseat
chairs arranged in pairs – offers private à la carte film screenings for groups.
The cinema complex also provides other exclusive services such as a reading area,
WiFi, cloakroom, a cigar humidor cabinet, and a DJ in charge of shaping the musical
ambience. ■
UCI Kinowelt
Focus on VIP areas
Vienna, Austria. The UCI Kinowelt multiplex in one of Europe’s largest shopping centres
Hürth Park is the most recent project being developed by United Cinemas International
Multiplex, a company that is based in Germany and also operates in Austria. The modern
complex near Cologne will be outfitted with the 9113 Megaseat, which offers a
roomy design that delivers maximum comfort for patrons. For Hürth Park, the client has
opted to use a double armrest to provide more private space for users. To maintain a
consistent corporate image, the same Megaseat line will be used at two Austrian complexes,
Millennium City in Vienna and Shopping City Süd in Neudorf, where the cinemas
will be outfitted with the 9078 model, which features open side frames. ■
Fashions, customs, and the way we do things are all subject to
change, but there’s one thing human beings will always seek out:
ENTERTAINMENT. And providers of entertainment need to adapt
to new trends. The world of cinema is no exception. Figueras is a
specialized firm that has worked extensively in this sector since it
was first established, and we continue to focus on enhancing the
movie-going experience. This means searching for new concepts
and offering clients ways to open up new lines of business based
on the furnishings installed in their facilities. The fact is that cinema
operators have now become providers of leisure services.
“What if seating were to disappear? What
if cinemas could be more than just a
place to see movies? Why not? Why not
look for ways to make these spaces more
profitable?”
Moviegoers are increasingly sophisticated consumers of audiovisual
experiences: they want surprises, intense sensations, and
interaction. They’re no longer satisfied with just watching. Going
out to see a movie must be an out-of-the-ordinary experience. This
is reflected in the increasing number of 3-D movies coming out
and the growing interest in adding VIP auditoriums to cinema complexes
to offer patrons a special experience.
As always, the future starts with a blank page. We need to use our
imaginations, to forget our preconceived notions. What if seating
were to disappear? What if cinemas could be more than just a
place to see movies? Why not? Why not look for ways to make
these spaces more profitable? The Figueras team is ready to embark
on this adventure with you.
