THIS WEEK: Seventh-ranked North Dakota travels to South Dakota to face 

the Coyotes in the 2007 regular season finale. The game is also UND’s final 

North Central Conference game. The Sioux can clinch a share of a third consecutive 

NCC championship with a win over USD coupled with a Nebraska- 

Omaha loss at Central Washington. 

MEDIA INFORMATION: Saturday’s game can be heard on The Fan 96.1 FM in 

Grand Forks and on stations across the Fighting Sioux Radio Network. Dan 

Hammer calls the play-by-play with former UND quarterback Tony Stein as 

his color analyst. Tank McNamara provides sideline reports. A FREE audio

THE SERIES WITH USD: UND leads the all-time series 56-28-5 (.657), a 

head-to-head history that dates all the way back to 1903. The Sioux have won 

10 of the last 11 matchups between the two teams. 

THE LAST MEETING: UND clinched a share of the NCC title with a 33-26 win 

over the Coyotes in the 2006 regular season finale Nov. 11 in Grand Forks ... 

Sioux senior QB Reed Manke threw three touchdown passes, including a pair 

to junior WR Weston Dressler ... UND held Harlon Hill candidate Stefan 

Logan to just 73 yards on 14 carries. 

ABOUT THE COYOTES: USD is looking to rebound from a 41-17 loss to UNO 

last Thursday ... USD RB Amos Allen was held under 100 yards rushing for 

the first time this season ... The Coyotes were also limited to fewer than 100 

yards rushing as a team for the first time this season ... USD enters the game 

riding a school-record 23-game home winning streak at the DakotaDome. 

USD HEAD COACH: Ed Meierkort (Dakota Wesleyan, 1982) is in his fourthseason 

as Coyote head coach and is 33-12 (.733). The Coyotes have never 

lost a home game under Meierkort, who is 22-0 at the DakotaDome.

LAST ACTION: The Sioux scored touchdowns 

on their first four possessions and 

rolled to a 59-14 win over St. Cloud State

UND, leaving him one shy of C.A. “Jack” 

West for second on the school’s all-time 

wins list, and two behind current NCC

FORTUNE .500: UND’s offense amassed 

560 yards of total offense against St. Cloud 

State and enters Saturday’s game averaging 

an NCC-leading 530.1 yards per game, 

which ranks third in Division II. At this 

pace, UND is on track to shatter the school 

record for average total offense in a regular 

season, which was 424.7 yards in 1975. 

UND’s 4,771 total yards have already 

smashed the previous regular season 

record of 4,210 in 2005. Also, the Sioux 

are averaging 41.8 points per game, which 

would eclipse the current regular season 

record of 40.6 set in 1972. 

ON THE OFFENSIVE: The Sioux enter the 

week ranked among the national leaders in 

several offensive categories, sitting third in 

total offense (530.1 ypg), fifth in team 

passing efficiency (171.46 rating), seventh 

in scoring offense (41.8 ppg) and eighth in 

rushing offense (265.3 ypg). 

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: While UND’s 

offense has put up impressive numbers 

throughout the year, the defensive unit has 

done its part as well. 

The Sioux enter this week’s game leading 

the NCC in total defense, allowing 305.7 

yards per game. The Sioux rank second in 

passing defense (192.6 ypg) and rushing 

defense (113.1 ypg). 

FINE AND DANNY: Junior QB Danny 

Freund (Kenosha, Wis.) continues to 

enjoy one of the finest seasons ever put 

together by a Sioux quarterback. 

Freund, who leads the NCC and ranks 

fourth nationally with a 175.5 quarterback 

rating, has set a UND regular season 

record with 2,318 yards passing. 

Freund also enters the regular season 

finale at South Dakota with 21 touchdown 

passes, two shy of Kelby Klosterman’s 

regular season record of 23 set in 2001. 

ON THE WESTON FRONT: It was another 

week and another school record for senior 

WR Weston Dressler (Bismarck, N.D.). 

The Harlon Hill Trophy candidate added a 

19th school record to his list when he toppled 

Phillip Moore’s (1995-98) mark for 

career regular season all-purpose yardage. 

Dressler enters his final regular season

Dressler enters the week ranked fourth 

nationally in receiving yards per game 

(110.4), seventh in receiving yards (994), 

ninth in all-purpose yards per game 

(184.7), and 16th in punt return average 

(13.0). 

GOING TO THE CHAPPELL: Sophomore RB 

Ryan Chappell (Grand Forks) ran for 83 

yards and a touchdown in 14 carries 

against St. Cloud State. 

That performance vaulted Chappell past 

Dale Kasowski (1972-75) and into fifth 

place on UND’s career rushing list with

BRADY’S BUNCH: Sophomore WR Brady 

Trenbeath (Cavalier, N.D.) enters 

Saturday’s game one reception shy of the 

100-catch plateau for his career. 

In nine games this season (all starts), 

Trenbeath has caught 39 passes for 548 

yards and a career-high five touchdowns. 

Last season Trenbeath caught 60 passes 

for 753 yards – both UND freshman 

records – and four touchdowns. 

JUST FOR KICKS: Sophomore K Brandon 

Hellevang (Fargo, N.D.) has set a UND 

regular season record with 49 successful 

PATs this season. His next successful extra 

point will also set a new UND single-seaso 

record for all games, one he currently 

shares with Jeff Glas (2003). Hellevang 

also kicked 49 PATs last year. 

Hellevang has made 96 consecutive extra 

points dating back to last season. The last, 

and only, time he has missed, came in last 

year’s season opener at Central 

Washington, which was his collegiate 

debut.

Head Coach 

DALE LENNON 

With a school-record .793 winning percentage, 

one NCAA Division II title, two 

NCAA Division II title game appearances, five 

North Central Conference Championships and 

three NCC Coach of the Year Awards, head 

coach Dale Lennon has cemented his legacy in 

the annals of Fighting Sioux football in just 

seven seasons at the helm. 

His 88 career wins at UND rank third on the school’s all-time list, 

trailing only C.A. “Jack” West (89) and his predecessor, current NCC 

commissioner Roger Thomas (90). 

Last season Lennon guided UND to an 11-2 overall record, highlighted 

by a NCC championship and a fourth consecutive berth in the NCAA 

postseason. Among UND’s most thrilling victories last season was a 

stunning road victory over Division I-AA power Northern Iowa. 

A former defensive coordinator for the Fighting Sioux from 1990-96, 

Lennon became the 24th head coach in UND football history when he 

was hired on March 29, 1999. 

It did not take Lennon long to continue UND’s winning tradition. In 

his first season (1999) as head coach, the Sioux finished 9-2, won a share 

of the NCC title and advanced to the first round of the NCAA playoffs. 

In 2000 Lennon and the Sioux went 8-3 and narrowly missed out on 

another NCAA berth. 

The 2001 season proved to be a watershed year for the UND football 

program. Lennon guided the team into a new era that year as the Sioux 

began play in the 13,500-seat Alerus Center, an indoor facility that has 

become one of the most exciting places to play in all of Division II football. 

The new home helped propel the Sioux on a memorable post-season 

run that culminated with the first national championship in program history, 

a 17-14 win over Grand Valley State. 

As a result, Lennon was named 2001 American Football Coaches 

Association NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, also a first in program 

history. The award earned the University of North Dakota a $10,000 academic 

scholarship from the AFCA to benefit the athletic department and 

its student-athletes. 

In addition to the AFCA national coaching honor, Lennon was recognized 

as the 2001 AFCA Region 5 Coach of the Year and the 2001 

NCAA Coach of the Year, the first time he received either honor. He was 

also named Division II National Coach of the Year by Don Hansen’s 

Weekly Football Gazette. 

In 2003 Lennon led the Fighting Sioux to a 12-2 record and a berth in 

the NCAA Division II championship game for the second time in three 

years. The Sioux finished a perfect 7-0 in NCC play and captured the 

program’s 22nd conference title (15th outright). 

Lennon capped the 2003 season by being named NCC Coach of the 

Year, Minnesota Vikings College Coach of the Year and the 

D2Football.com Midwest Region Coach of the Year. 

In 2004 the Fighting Sioux went 11-3 and advanced to the NCAA 

Division II semifinal round. Last year Lennon guided the Sioux to a 

fourth NCC crown during his tenure and another NCAA postseason 

berth. 

In 2005 Lennon guided the Sioux to an 10-3 record and a third consecutive 

berth in the NCAA playoffs.

with success in the classroom, exceeding a 3.0 grade point average (out

Prior to returning to UND as head coach, Lennon served as head 

coach at the University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.), where he posted a 12- 

9 record during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. In 1998 the Marauders were 

8-3, won the league championship and advanced to the NAIA playoffs. 

Lennon was named the North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference 

Coach of the Year. 

A native of Knox, N.D., Lennon graduated from Rugby High School 

before starting his athletic career at UND. A former running back for the 

Sioux, Lennon served as team captain in 1983 and was named the team’s 

most valuable offensive back. A three-year letterwinner, Lennon earned 

All-NCC honorable mention honors as a senior. 

After graduating from UND in 1985, Lennon earned his master’s 

degree from Northern State (S.D.) in 1986 while serving as a graduate 

assistant coach. He also spent seasons at Valley City State (1986) and 

Dickinson State (1987) before returning to UND for the 1988 season as 

a defensive line coach. 

He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1990 and began transforming 

the Sioux defense into one of the top squads in the league and 

the nation. Under Lennon’s watch as defensive coordinator, UND led the 

NCC in scoring defense four times and total defense twice. The Sioux 

also appeared in the NCAA playoffs four straight years during that time. 

Lennon and his wife, Chris, have three sons: Jared (18), Trevor (17) 

and Cody (13).
