‘06 CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW
Comparable to the previous year, one of the chief objectives for the 2006 Fighting Sioux women’s cross country team was to make a return
visit to the NCAA national championships. With only two runners remaining from the 2004 campaign, it wasn’t going to be the easiest battle
the Sioux have attempted, but they weren’t going to let go of their dream easily.
The Sioux began their season by capturing the team title at the UND/Ron Pynn Invitational. The team, which captured five of the top 10 positions,
combined for a total score of 33. Leading the way for the women were Rachelle Duerre (Jr., Sherwood, N.D.), who finished fourth with
a time of 19:49, and Mandy Gefroh (So., Bismarck, N.D.), who captured fifth, finishing two seconds behind Duerre. Other notable finishes
were by Callie Malone (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) finishing seventh, Kristy Keithley (Jr., Dickinson, N.D.) finishing eighth, and Kristi
Dahlheimer (Fr., Anoka, Minn.) finishing ninth.
The following week the Sioux would head on the road to Minneapolis to
compete at the prestigious University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational.
Guiding the way for the Sioux was Keithley, who finished the 6k course in
a time of 23:56 to place 28th overall. Also finishing in the top 100 runners
were Duerre (36th–24:07), Margaret Landberg (Sr., Birchwood, Minn.)
(40th–24:15), Gefroh (51st–24:23), Dahlheimer (53rd–24:26), Tika Baker
(Fr., New Town, N.D.) and Erica Fossum (Jr., Bigfork, Minn.). The Sioux
finished sixth in the 29-team race.
The team was optimistic they would continue their success as they traveled to Wayne, Neb., to compete in the Pre-Region Meet. Keithley finished
in fifth place, completing the 6K run in 23:16. Other top runners for the Sioux included Malone (ninth), Landberg (16th) and Dahlheimer
(17th). Baker and Fossum placed 23rd and 24th to round out UND’s top five runners. As a team, the Sioux took fourth place.
One week later, the Sioux were on to Aberdeen, S.D., to participate in the Northern State Roe Granger Invitational. The team had five of the
top six finishers and went on to win the invitational. Duerre led all Sioux runners with a second-place finish, finishing the 5k course in a time
of 19:41. Other top UND finishers included Malone (third–19:57); Gefroh (fourth–20:04); Baker (fifth–20:15); and Lori Benke (Fr.,
Jamestown, N.D.) (sixth–20:17).
Next on the schedule for the Sioux was the NCC championship meet in Vermillion, S.D. With two weeks between meets, the women could
once again concentrate on their goal of ultimately making it to the national championship. The Sioux got the motivation they needed as the
team won its first North Central Conference title since 2001 and fifth in team history. Sioux senior Landberg placed fourth individually to lead
all UND runners with Duerre (seventh) and Keithley (eighth) also placing in the top 10, with the trio earning All-NCC honors.
On the road once again to Wayne, Neb., and its goal within reach, the team was set to make an impression at the NCAA North Central Regional
meet. Keithley and Gefroh finished 24th and 28th, respectively, to lead the Sioux to a fifth-place finish at the 24 team meet. The Sioux were
one of six teams to qualify for the NCAA national meet. Keithley ran the 6k course in a
time of 22:53.7, sixth-best among all North Central Conference runners at the meet.
Gefroh’s time was 23:02, eighth-best among NCC runners.
Traveling to Pensacola, Fla., for the NCAA Division II championship meet would bring an
end to the journey the women found themselves on throughout the season. Having finally
reached their goal, it was time for the Sioux women to prove themselves on a national
stage. Landberg finished 37th overall in the 6k race to lead the Sioux women’s cross country
team. Other runners from UND placing in the top 100 runners were Keithley
(75th–22:19), Dahlheimer (77th–22:26), Malone (79th–22:28.1), Duerre (80th–22:28.2),
Gefroh (81st–22:28.4) and Benke (94th–22.41). The Sioux placed 13th overall out of 24
teams.
Not to be outdone athletically, the Sioux proved themselves on the academic front as well.
Eight members of the team were named to the NCC Commissioners Academic Honor Roll.
Landberg, Keithley, Malone, Duerre and Gefroh were named to the USTCCCA All-
Academic Team. UNDs team grade point average of 3.62 was 12th-highest of all Division
II cross country teams.
‘07 TRACK & FIELD PREVIEW
As the Fighting Sioux enter the 2007 track and field season, there is an air of optimism to continue the achievements from last
year: a fifth-place team finish at the NCC indoor championships, and a third-place team finish at the NCC outdoor championships.
Going into his 22nd season as head coach of the women’s track and field teams, Dick Clay will look to a talented mixture of
returnees and newcomers in several key events to once again be considered a strong contender in the North Central
Conference.
Jessica Messer
placed fourth in the shot.
Jumps
A talented group of returnees will lead the way for the Sioux. Michelle Burgard (Sr.,
Jamestown, N.D.) is a strong contender in the triple jump. Burgard placed third in the triple
jump for the Sioux at the NCC outdoor championships last season. Nikki Dahlstrom (Jr.,
Grand Forks, N.D.) will provide significant contributions in the high jump. Sophomore
Jessica Clausnitzer (Bismarck, N.D.) and freshman Kate LaRoche (Faribault, Minn.) will
also provide competitiveness for the team in this area. Jess Fleck (Sr., Wahpeton, N.D.) will
return in the pole vault. Fleck holds the indoor pole vault school record and qualified for the
NCAA Indoor Meet in 2006.
Sprints/Hurdles
This area will once again be young for the Sioux, but is full of promise. With a strong group
of freshmen, only time will tell the potential these women will have on the track. Clausnitzer
will be pulling double duty for the Sioux as she will be a competitive force for the Sioux in
hurdle events.
Throws
There are plenty of crossover athletes that will compete for the Sioux in several throwing
events. Suzy Homstad (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) is a top returning thrower for the Sioux
who also placed third in the javelin at the NCC outdoor championships last season. Heidi
Zander (Williston, N.D.) will participate in both throwing and jumps for the Sioux. Danye
Guinn (So., St. Francis, Minn.), also a member of the Fighting Sioux women's basketball
team, will compete in the discus and shot put. Guinn was NCC champion in the discuss and
Mid-Distance/Distance
An area of strength for the Sioux, the success is expected to continue into the
2007 season. Leading the pack are seniors Heidi Evans (Roseau, Minn.),
Rachelle Duerre (Sherwood, N.D.), and Margaret Landberg (Birchwood,
Minn.). Evans placed fourth in the 800-meter run last season at the NCC outdoor
WHERE ARE THEY NOW
RUNNING THROUGH HISTORY
A CONVERSATION WITH HEAD COACH DICK CLAY
As with other sports in any program, the University of North Dakota cross
country and track teams have gone through their fair share of ups and downs.
From the flood of 1997 cancelling the outdoor track season to the 2000 cross
country season, where the team placed second in the NCAA national meet, the
Fighting Sioux have experienced both the sweet taste of victory and the bitter
taste of defeat.
The Fighting Sioux women’s track and field team entered the 1980s led by
coach Margaret Peterson, with Mike Grandall coaching the cross country team. It
is due, much in part to Peterson, that the track and field program began to flourish
at that time. Peterson was also the coach for UND’s field hockey team, and
she recruited many of the players to become dual-sport student-athletes. When
the field hockey program was dropped in the fall of 1984, Peterson resigned as
the track and field coach and went on to obtain her doctorate at UND. An interim
coach took the helm for one year as the search for the new head coach began. It
was in 1985 that UND would turn over the reigns of both the women’s cross
country and track and field teams to the newly appointed head coach, Dick Clay.
The first season under Clay brought small numbers, yet a solid and very good
group. Clay remembers having mixed emotions at the first home cross country
meet, met with both nerves and anxiety.
“We had only five runners and one of the women was hurt, but she ended up
able to run, making a complete team,” Clay recalled. The track and field team
that year also had smaller numbers but competed well. “All of these athletes
were very committed to the program and remain loyal alumni to this day,” said
Clay.
It can be said that in the 1980s, the UND teams didn’t receive as much support
as they could have utilized. In fact, it wasn’t until the late 1980s/early 1990s,
when the cross country team experienced its first successes, that financial support
became more available. “I think it just took awhile to get to that point where people
began to take notice,” Clay said. “As time went on, the teams began to earn
more respect. With the increased success at the conference and national level,
both track and cross country started to gain respect as one of the better programs
in NCAA Division II.”
Along with this new mentality came many successes for several individuals on
the team. Allyson Grohnke became UND’s first NCAA track and field All-
American in 1987. Steph Bruening and Sheila Pexsa followed suit for the
Fighting Sioux’s cross country team, becoming All-Americans in 1991. That
season was also the first time in history that the Fighting Sioux qualified for the
NCAA national meet as a team, placing fifth in the nation.
The 1990s also saw many successes for the Fighting Sioux teams. In 1992, the
cross country team captured UND’s first North Central Conference
Championship and their first NCAA team award with a fourth-place finish in the
national championships. The track and field team had its own success in 1993,
when it had its highest NCAA finish, placing fifth at the indoor national championship.
To describe the cross country team’s 1994 season as successful may be an
understatement. The Fighting Sioux captured the top three individual places in
the NCC to win the team title and also upset the No. 1-ranked team in the nation
enroute to UND’s first-ever NCAA regional team title. The Fighting Sioux captured
three of the top four places in the regional meet and went on to place fourth
in the national meet, missing third place by one point. That season also saw
freshman Kim Olund become the first Fighting Sioux to win an individual conference
title.
The 1994 track and field team also saw more individual honors for their team
members. Marie Crep became UND’s first NCAA national champion, winning
the 800-meter run at the NCAA indoor championships. Steph Bruening was
named the NCAA Woman of the Year. Bruening finished her career with 10 All-
American honors and is still currently one of only two Division II student-athletes
in history to earn All-American honors in all of the distance events;
1,500/3,000/5,000 and 10,000-meter run.
The mid-to-late 1990s brought more successes for the cross country team. The
1995 team once again advanced to the NCAA championships. Individually,
Olund won her second consecutive NCC cross country title and became UND’s
first individual region champion. In 1996, the cross country team won its third
North Central Conference team championship and placed fourth at the NCAA
national championships.
Becky Leppard won the
individual NCC and
regional cross country
titles in 1998. The 1999
cross country team
upset the top rated
teams in the regional
meet, placing second on
its way to another top
five finish at the NCAA
national championships,
placing fourth in the
nation.
Successes kept coming
as the women ran
into the new millennium.
In 2000, the indoor
track team had its highest
NCC finish in
school history. All
seven of the Fighting
UND head coach Dick Clay talks with middle
distance runner Heidi Evans.
Sioux’s national qualifiers earned All-American honors at the NCAA national
meet, as the team placed 12th. Clay was named the 2000 NCAA National Indoor
Coach of the Year and 11 track and field athletes were named to the United
States Track Coaches All-Academic Team.
The 2000 cross country team also had national success, as they placed second
in the NCAA national meet. The runner-up finish was the best in school history.
In addition, Leppard was also the individual runner-up, finishing less than 10
seconds from winning a national title.
There was still more national success to come to the track and field team. In
2001, the 1,600-meter relay team placed fourth at the national meet, setting a
school record of 3:45.05. In addition, 13 Fighting Sioux track and field members
were named to the USTCA All-Academic Team. Individually, Leppard finished
her career with nine NCAA All-American honors and an unprecedented 12 NCC
individual titles. She was also named NCAA Woman of the Year from North
Dakota and she, along with Missy Berg, received NCAA postgraduate scholarships.
The Fighting Sioux cross country team received more honors in the early
2000s. In 2001, the team took home the program’s sixth NCAA national trophy
in 10 years, placing fourth. In 2003, high jumper Julie Johnson finished her
career as the first track and field athlete to earn All-America honors each of her
four years. Jessica Neva completed her career in 2003 as the first Fighting Sioux
female cross country athlete to earn NCAA All-American honors four consecutive
years.
In addition, the track and field teams garnered more honors in the new millennium.
In 2002, all eight Fighting Sioux NCAA qualifiers earned All-American
honors, taking home a 10th-place finish at the indoor national championship.
Jessica Schill was named NCAA Woman of the Year from North Dakota and
received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship in 2004. UND’s success continued
as recently as the fall of 2006 when the Fighting Sioux cross country team captured
the NCC cross country title for the fifth time in school history.
The depth and strength of the Fighting Sioux women’s cross country and track
and field teams is no longer a secret. Clay remembers favorably those individuals
he has coached favorably.
“The strength of the lifelong friendships that are created with the student-athletes
and that the student-athletes foster among themselves is more a measure of
our team success than anything else,” Clay said. “They have provided some great
memories. Not only are they well-grounded individuals, they are also good citizens
who do outstanding things.”
Their distinctiveness doesn’t stop at graduation. Whether it is being role models
or having success with their careers and families, there is something special
about the Fighting Sioux cross country and track and field family of student-athletes.
