25th Season 

2006-07 marks Michael Grandall’s 25th season as head coach of UND’s cross country and track and field teams. He took over the men’s 

cross country and track and field coaching position in 1982-83 and additionally coached women’s cross country at UND from 1980-84. 

Numerous Fighting Sioux athletes have attained All-America status under the tutelage of Grandall, including 2005 outdoor All-American 

Tyler Stoltz, who finished fifth in the javelin, 2004 outdoor All-American Jason Cook, who finished fifth in the discus one year earlier, and 

most recently prior to that 2002 indoor All-Americans Aaron Berndt and Mike Backes. 

2002 indoor All-Americans Aaron Berndt and 

Mike Backes placed fourth and fifth nationally in 

the 800-meters and triple jump, respectively. 

Norm McGee was a five-time national champion 

and 13-time All-American in the sprint 

events in the mid-to-late 1980’s under Grandall, 

and Dave Levos was a two-time national champion 

and five-time All-American in the mid-80’s 

in the throws. Both were inducted into the UND 

Athletic Hall of Fame; Levos was enshrined in 

2000 and McGee in 2001. 

Steve Burian, Scott Jemtrud, Mark Murdock, 

Marc Sondreal and Brian Emerson also won 

multiple All-American honors under Grandall’s 

guidance. Burian and Murdock each won four 

All-American honors in the shot put, while 

Sondreal was a four-time honoree in the high 

jump. Emerson was a three-time outdoor All- 

American, twice in the discus and once in the 

shot put. Other All-Americans under Grandall 

include Tracy Martin, Chuck Torrence, Bryan 

Greenwood, Jon Wrzesinski, Rory Beil, Jared 

Bruggeman, Jim Mallory and Chad Heltemes. 

Some of UND’s biggest cross country supporters take the time to reminisce at the Ron Pynn

Grandall is a native of Lignite, N.D., where he won the North Dakota State Class B title in the 100 and 220-yard dashes. Grandall is a 

1970 graduate of Minot State. Grandall coached and taught at Mohall (N.D.) High School from 1970-1976 and 1977-79 until coming to 

UND in 1979 to complete a master’s degree in physical education. He served as a graduate assistant in physical education at UND from 

1979-81 and assisted in cross country and track. In 1981-82, Grandall was the intramural director at UND. 

Grandall is certified as an Education Level II with the United States of America Track and Field (USATF) Coaches Association. Grandall 

was also named a referee for the prestigious Drake Relays in 1995.

Assistant Head Coach 

Lisa Rollefstad enters her first year with the Fighting Sioux track 

and field team. Rollefstad previously worked at Ferris State 

University as men’s and women’s track and field/cross country 

coach, and served as Ferris’ field events coordinator along with 

coordinating the track and field program’s conditioning and 

weight training areas. Rollefstad has had five All-Americans 

under her direction. Rollefstad was a graduate assistant coach at 

Bemidji (Minn.) State University during the 2001-2002 athletics 

season under head coach Craig Hougen, where she helped the 

Beavers to a third-place men’s finish and a fifth-place women’s 

ranking at the 2002 NSIC outdoor track and field championships. 

Prior to Bemidji State, Rollefstad was the girls basketball coach 

and assistant track and field coach in 2000-2001 at Lakota (N.D.) 

High School. From 1998-2000, she assisted with the track and 

field programs at UND, coaching the sprints, hurdles, pole vault 

and relay events. Rollefstad was a two-time NAIA All-American 

track and field performer in the sprinting events at the University 

of Mary. She graduated from Mary in 1998 with a bachelor’s 

degree in physical education and received her master’s degree in 

sports studies at Bemidji State in 2002. Rollefstad is a 1993 graduate 

of Cavalier High School.

Jumps 

Tim Delmore is in his eighth year as an assistant coach for the 

Fighting Sioux. Delmore is a 1976 graduate of UND and coaches 

the high jump, long jump and triple jump athletes. Delmore, a 

native of Cando, N.D., has 24 years of coaching experience and 

is considered one of the region’s top jump coaches. He has 

coached four All-Americans at UND, including Julie Johnson, the 

2003 NCAA runner-up in the high jump.

Graduate Assistant Coach 

Nate Foss is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Fighting 

Sioux men’s and women’s cross country and track programs. For 

the past three years, Foss has been the head boys track and field 

coach at Chaska (Minn.) High School. Foss was a two time varsity 

letterwinner for the Sioux during the 1998-99 and 1999-00 

seasons, running cross country and middle distances in track. He 

earned his bachelor’s degree from UND in December of 2000 and 

completed his master’s degree from UND in the spring of 2002. 

Foss is currently working on his Doctorate in education.

BAUKOL 

Director of Strength 

and Conditioning 

Nate Baukol is in his first year as UND’s director of strength and 

conditioning. He was the assistant director of strength and conditioning 

at the University of Wyoming from May to October 2006. 

Prior to that, he spent three years as UND’s assistant director of 

strength and conditioning. Baukol is originally from Minnesota 

State-Moorhead with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He 

received his master’s degree in kinesiology from UND in 2004. 

Baukol is a certified strength coach through the Collegiate 

Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and the National 

Strength and Conditioning Association, and is also a certified 

Level 1 Olympic lifting club coach. Baukol resides with his wife, 

Jennifer, and infant daughter, Emma, in Grand Forks.

2006 CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW 

The 2006 season was well run by many members of the Fighting Sioux men’s cross country team. Led by seniors Lee DeKrey (Grand 

Forks, N.D.), Patrick Mahoney (Winona, Minn.) and Richie Spitsberg (East Grand Forks, Minn.), the Sioux proved once again they 

had the abilities to be a strong force in the North Central Conference. 

The 5th Annual UND/Ron Pynn Invitational kicked off the 2006 season, the only home meet for the Fighting Sioux. It was here that 

the Sioux raced to a first-place team finish. Guiding the way was DeKrey, who earned first place with a time of 26:16. Other top-10 

finishes for the men were Spitsberg finishing seventh and Kyle Downs (Jr., Hibbing, Minn.) at eighth. 

One week later, the Sioux were on the road to Minneapolis to participate in the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of 

Minnesota. DeKrey finished 78th overall to pace the Sioux men’s cross country team to an 18th-place finish out of 52 teams. Spitsberg 

(108th place) completed the race with a time of 27:48, followed closely by Nathan 

Nordlund (So., Clearbrook, Minn.) at 27:52. The Sioux had four other runners finish in 

the top half of the 509-runner field: Downs, Mahoney, Jeremy Jones (So., Grand Forks) 

and Kyle Rosseau (Fr., Eagan, Minn.). 

The Sioux would once again find themselves on the road, this time to Wayne, Neb. ,to 

compete in a Pre-Region Meet. DeKrey once again led the Sioux, finishing the 10K run 

in 33:58 to help the Fighting Sioux to a third-place finish. Also finishing in the top 20 for 

the Sioux were Spitsburg in 15th place, Jones in 17th place and Nordlund in 20th. Rosseau 

and Mahoney finished at 22nd and 23rd. 

For the fourth straight week, the Sioux would find themselves competing in another meet 

when the team traveled to Aberdeen, S.D., for the Northern State Roe Granger 

Invitational. On this day, DeKrey placed second individually to lead the Sioux to a firstplace 

finish in the three-team invitational. The Sioux had eight other runners finish in the 

top 20: Spitsberg (fifth–27:17); Downs (sixth–27:19); Mahoney (ninth–27:57); Nordlund 

(11th–28:32); Jones (12th–28:47); Rosseau (15th–29:01); Jonathan Gilson (So., Maple 

Valley, Wash) (sixteenth–29:02); and 

Josh LaBlanc (Fr., International Falls, 

Minn.) (18th–29:21). 

It was in Vermillion, S.D., that the Sioux 

would compete at the Don Baker

together the men found themselves running to a fourth-place team finish. DeKrey led 

the charge, earning eighth-place with a time of 25:55. Three other Sioux runners ran in 

a close pack behind DeKrey, led by Spitsberg and followed by Nordlund and Mahoney. 

The season would come to a close two weeks later when the Sioux would visit Wayne, 

Neb., for the second time to compete in the NCAA North Central Regional championships. 

It was here that the Sioux cruised to a 10th-place team finish. DeKrey finished 

22nd overall, running the 10k course in a time of 32:15.4, the fifth-best time out of all 

North Central Conference runners at the meet. Also placing were Mahoney 

(55th–33:43), Downs (68th–34:06), Rosseau (76th–34:17), Jones (80th–34:32), 

Nordlund (82–34:45) and Spitsberg (89th–35:08). UND’s 10th-place team finish was

The Sioux also proved themselves on the academic front during the 2006 

season as well. The Sioux were named by the United States Track and 

Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as having the fourth-highest 

grade point average (3.42) among all men’s cross country teams. Lee 

DeKrey was named to the All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA.

2007 TRACK & FIELD PREVIEW 

For the Fighting Sioux men’s track and field team, a large group of seniors and 

room for leadership positions are a source of pre-season confidence. The Sioux 

are returning after placing third in both the NCC indoor and outdoor championships 

in 2006. 

Coach Mike Grandall, who is entering his 25th year as the head of the Sioux 

men’s track and field teams, will rely on the seniors to lead the way for the team 

in the North Central Conference. With good energy and performances from last 

season, the team will have the tools necessary to compete levelwise within the 

conference. 

Distance: 

Coming from a successful season in cross country, seniors Lee DeKrey (Sr., 

Grand Forks, N.D.) and Richie Spitsberg (Sr., East Grand Forks, N.D.) will 

lead the pack for the Sioux. Spitsberg will also be a strong force in the 3000meter 

steeplechase where he enjoyed success last season. Skip Gilson (Jr., 

Maple Valley, Wash.) will also provide some leadership qualities for the Sioux 

after placing last year in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs. 

Mid-Distance: 

This is an area of strength for the Sioux, who will look here for continued success with guidance from seniors Matt 

Gerszewski (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Matt Sailer (Apple Valley, Minn.). 

Sprints and Hurdles: 

Donovan Alexander (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba), also a Fighting Sioux football player, will continue to lead the men in 

short sprints. Alexander earned fourth place in the 100-meter dash last spring at the NCC outdoor championships. Zach 

Green (Sr., Karlstad, Minn.) will also provide leadership abilities for the team. Coming off a redshirt season, Ryan 

Chappell (Fr., Grand Forks, N.D.), who is also a Fighting Sioux football player, will compete for the Sioux in the sprint 

events. Brandon Yates (Jr., Minot, N.D.) will lead the Sioux team in the hurdling events. 

Matt Fick 

Throws: 

This is a very talented group of individuals. One of the top returning throwers for the 

Sioux is Matt Fick (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.). Fick placed second in the javelin throw at 

the NCC outdoor championships and competed at the 2006 NCAA Division II outdoor 

nationals. The Sioux also have the past two conference champions in javelin, Drew 

Thomas (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) in 2005 and Erik Moe (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) 

in 2006. Moe placed first in the discus throw at the 2006 NCC outdoor championships. 

Junior Matt Litzinger (Grand Forks, N.D.) placed fourth at the championships and will 

be looked to for continued success this season. Also expected to bring great contributions 

to the team are Patrick

Jumps: 

Paving the way for the Sioux are Clark Carlson (Sr., Lisbon, 

N.D.) and Jay Schroeder (Jr., Cavalier, N.D.). Carlson and 

Schroeder are the top UND returners who placed at the conference 

outdoor meet with pole vaulting heights over 15 feet.

Mike Backes earned All-America honors in 2002 with a 

fifth-place finish in the triple jump at the NCAA Division II 

Indoor Track and Field Championships. 

The school record-holder in the triple jump with a leap of 

50-10 3/4 at the 2002 NCC indoor meet, Backes was also a 

member of UND’s 4x110-meter hurdle relay team that established 

a school record in 2000. 

In 2002 Backes was named to the Verizon Division II 

Academic All-American Team and the NCC At-Large 

Academic Team (for the second time). He was also a three-time 

member of the NCAA Division II Track Coaches Association 

All-Academic Team. 

A 1998 graduate of Red River High School in Grand Forks, 

Backes was the 1999 UND Rookie of the Year for the entire 

UND Fighting Sioux athletic department.

BEIL

Track & Field 

1991 

Rory Beil finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles at the 

1991 NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships. It is 

the highest finish for a Sioux hurdler in UND history. 

Beil is still tied as the UND Indoor record holder in the 55meter 

hurdles. During the 1991 outdoor season, Beil captured a 

NCC championship in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. He 

also captained the UND outdoor track team in 1989-90-91. 

Beil was a 1987 graduate of Valley City High School and 

came to UND to major in business marketing.

ALL-AMERICANS 

Aaron Berndt earned All-America honors in 2002 with a 

fourth-place finish in the 800-meters at the NCAA Division II 

Indoor Track and Field Championships. 

A member of the 2002 North Central Conference At-Large 

Academic Team, Berndt owns five indoor school records and 

two outdoor marks. In indoor competition he set school records 

in the 500, 600, 800 and 1,000-meter races, and was also a 

member of the 2002 3,200-meter relay team that set a school 

record. In outdoor competition Berndt was a member of UND’s 

school-record 3,200-meter relay team and holds the school standard 

in the 800-meter dash. 

Berndt was a 1998 graduate of Red River High School in 


Jared Bruggeman placed fourth in the 800-meters at the 

1992 NCAA Division II Track and Field Meet. Bruggeman is a 

former record-holder of the UND Indoor 800-meters record and 

was on the 3,200-meter relay team that set the outdoor record of 

7:48.30 in 1993. 

Bruggeman, a 1989 graduate of LaCrescent High School 

(Minn.). Bruggeman is married to coach Maria (Oistad) 

Bruggeman.

Steve Burian was a four-time All-American in the shot put. 

In 1988, Burian finished sixth at the NCAA Division II Meet. He 

placed fourth in 1989, and again in 1990, with a final finish of 

2nd place at the NCAA outdoor championships. Steve finished in 

the top three in discus at all four of his career NCC outdoor 

championships. Was named GTE Cosida All Academic 1st Team 

in 1988-1989 and 1989-1990. Achieved NCC All Academic 

Team 1988-1990, and was a awarded a post graduate scholarship. 

Steve was also awarded the UND Young alumni 

Achievement Award in 2005. 

Steve Burian is CEO & Co-founder of Advanced Engineering & 

Engineering Services (AE2S) in Grand Forks, ND, and has 

served as President of Fighting Sioux Letter winners. Steve is 

currently Co-Chairman of Fighting Sioux Track & Field and 

Cross Country National Alumni Committee. 

Burian was a 1986 graduate and valedictorian of his

Chris Carbonneau placed 32nd at the 1992 NCAA Division 

II Cross Country Meet to earn All-America honors. Carbonneau 

was also a member of the UND outdoor 4x1600-meter relay that 

holds the school record set in 1992 and he holds the steeplechase 

record set in 1992. 

Carbonneau was a 1988 graduate of Tartan High School in 

St. Paul, Minn.

2004 

Jason Cook finished fifth in the discus at the 2004 NCAA 

outdoor championships to earn All-American honors for the 

Sioux. 

Cook, a 2000 graduate of Spring Lake Park (Minn.) High 

School, earned a degree in civil engineering at UND.

Brian Emerson earned the first of his three All-America honors 

in 1999 with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor 

Meet in the shot put. His second All-America was earned in the 

discus with a fifth-place finish at the outdoor meet in 2000. His 

third honor was also with a fifth-place finish at the 2001 NCAA 

Division II Outdoor Track and Field Meet in the discus.

Robert Fransen placed sixth in the high jump at the 1977 

NCAA Division II Track and Field Meet to earn All-America 

honors.

GELLING

1967 

Arjan Gelling, a 1980 inductee into the University of North 

Dakota Athletic Hall of Fame won an NCAA Division II 

Championship Title in 1969 in the the six-mile run. In 1968, 

Gelling placed second in the 10,000-meters and fifth in the 5,000meters. 

In 1969, he placed second in the three-mile run along 

with his first place in the six mile run. 

Gelling won the 1967 NCAA Division II Cross Country 

Championships with a time of 19:33.50. He also earned All- 

America honors in 1968 with a fourth-place finish and 1969 with 

a third-place finish in the cross country championships. 

Gelling holds the four-mile North Central Conference course 

record with a time of 19:25.90, set in 1967. He also holds the 

UND Outdoor 10,000-meters record, set in 1968, with a time of 

30:34.00.

ALL-AMERICANS 

Bryan Greenwood earned All-America honors in the 1,600meter 

relay which placed fourth at the 1987 NCAA Division II 

Championships. 

Greenwood is a UND record holder in the Indoor 1,600meter 

relay set in 1987, and the Outdoor 400, 800, and 1,600meter 

relays, all set in 1987. 

Greenwood came to UND after graduating from Cavalier 

High School in 1993 where he was the Class B state champion 

in the 100, 200 and 400-meters.

HELTEMES

1998 

Chad Heltemes placed eighth at the 1998 NCAA Division 

II Outdoor Championships in the 1,500-meters to earn All- 

America honors. 

He previously held the UND indoor 1,000-meter record 

(set in 1996) and still holds the indoor mile record (set in 1997) 

and the outdoor record in the 1,500-meters which he set in 1998. 

A three-sport athlete from St. Francis High School in 

Anoka, Minn., Heltemes earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical 

engineering from UND.

1992 

Greg Hexum earned All-America honors with his 36thplace 

finish at the 1992 NCAA Cross Country Championships. 

Hexum was a 1989 graduate of Duluth Proctor High School 

who ran cross country and track for UND. He graduated from 

UND with a major in English and a minor in athletic coaching.

Scott Jemtrud finished fifth in the pole vault in 1990 and 

finished third at the 1991 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and 

Field Meet. 

Jemtrud holds the outdoor record in the pole vault, a record 

which he set in 1991.

Mike Kane placed fifth in the 10,000-meters at the 1968 

NCAA Division II Track and Field Meet to earn All-America 

honors.

Larry Kennedy placed fifth in the mile run to earn All- 

America honors at the 1975 NCAA Division II Track and Field 

Meet. 

DAVE VE 

LEVOS 

(1982-86)

1984, 1985, 1986 

Levos graduated from Grand Forks Red River in 1981 and 

graduated from UND with a degree in business administration in 

1986. 

Levos was a three-time NCAA Division II All-America 

weight man in both the discus and shot put in 1984, 1985 and 

1986. A five-time All-American for finishing in the top six at the 

NCAA Division II meet, he also won eight conference track 

titles. He was a four-time NCC shot put champion and triple winner 

in the discus under coach Mike Grandall. 

As a senior, Levos was first in the shot put in all six UND 

indoor meets and was first in the shot put in the 1985 national 

indoor meet. He didn’t compete in the 1985 outdoor season, 

instead competing in 1986. In 1986, Levos’ national title in the 

discus enabled him to compete in the Division I national championships, 

where he finished 10th. 

Levos is married to the former Nancy Wavrin (UND 1986- 

87), and the couple currently resides in Medford, Ore., where 

Levos is a manufacturing manager for Bear Creek, Corp. He and 

Nancy have two sons, Michael and Dylan. 

Levos was inducted into UND’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 

2000.

1998 

Jim Mallory placed fifth in the 5,000-meters at the 1998 

NCAA Division II Meet to earn All-America honors. Mallory also 

holds current UND records in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000-meter 

races, both set in 1998.

1987 

Tracy Martin earned All-America honors in the 1,600-meter 

relay which placed fourth at the 1987 NCAA Division II Indoor 

Championships. Martin is also a part of the current UND recordholding 

4x400m relay team.

MCGEE GEE

ALL-AMERICANS 

Norm McGee was a three-time NCAA Division II Champion 

in the 100-meter dash. McGee won the titles in 1987, 1988, and 

1989. He placed fourth in the indoor 55-meter dash in 1985, was 

the champion in 1987 and in 1988. In 1985, McGee placed fourth 

in the 100-meters and finished sixth in 200-meters at the NCAA 

Division II Outdoor Track and Field meet. In 1987, McGee won 

the 100-meters and was second in the 200-meters. He repeated 

that feat at the 1988 and 1989 NCAA Meets. 

In all, McGee brought home five first-place finishes from the 

NCAA Division II Track and Field meets, the most in UND history. 

McGee also ran the 1,600-meter relay and earned All- 

America honors at the 1987 NCAA Division II Championships. 

McGee was inducted into UND’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 

2001. 

MARK ARK 

MURDOCK

1995, 1997, 1998 

Mark Murdock placed second in the 1995 NCAA Division 

II Indoor Meet in the shot put. In the outdoor meet, that same 

season he took home a sixth-place finish. Two years later, in 

1997, he placed sixth in the shot put at the NCAA Track and 

Field Meet to earn his third All-America honor. His fourth All- 

America honor came at the NCAA Outdoor Meet in 1998 when 

he placed eighth in the shot put. 

In his senior season at UND, Murdock took first place five 

times in outdoor competition, including the North Central 

Conference Championships where he threw 54-07. 

Murdock was a 1992 graduate of Red River High School in 

Grand Forks.

SONDREAL

A four-time All-American, Marc Sondreal posted a thirdplace 

finish in the high jump at the 1997 NCAA Division II 

indoor meet. In 1998 at the NCAA indoor meet, Sondreal 

moved up a position to second place, and then in the 1998 outdoor 

season, he finished seventh in the high jump. 

In Sondreal’s 1998 season, he won six of the eight high 

jump competitions during the outdoor season, including the 

North Central Conference Outdoor Championships where he 

tied a meet record with a leap of 7-01 1/2. 

Sondreal earned his fourth All-American award in 1999, 

finishing eighth in the high jump at the NCAA outdoor meet. 

Sondreal graduated from from UND in the spring of 1999 

with a degree in physical therapy. He is originally from 

Northwood, N.D.

2005 

Tyler Stoltz earned All-America honors by placing fifth in 

the javelin at the 2005 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & 

Field Championships. Stoltz’s fifth-place finish came on a 

throw of 207 feet, 4 inches. 

Stoltz was named UND’s most valuable performer (field 

events) in 2005. 

Stoltz, a 2002 graduate of Valley City (N.D.) High School, 

is majoring in psychology at the University of North Dakota.

Track & Field 

1987 

Chuck Torrance earned All-America honors in the 1,600meter 

relay which placed fourth at the 1987 NCAA Division II 

Championships. Torrance is also a member of the current UND 

record-holding indoor and outdoor 4x400-meter relays set in 

1987. 

Torrance, a 1993 graduate of Grand Forks Central High 

School, majored in zoology while at the University of North 

Dakota.
