Randall Herbst was promoted to associate<br />

head coach <strong>of</strong> the S<strong>ioux</strong> m<strong>en</strong>'s b<strong>asketball</strong><br />

team on May 19, 2004. Herbst, who has<br />

sp<strong>en</strong>t the past four seasons as an assistant<br />

on Glas’s staff, is the first in Glas’s 16<br />

seasons at UND that has held the<br />

distinction <strong>of</strong> being an associate head<br />

coach with the F<strong>ighting</strong> S<strong>ioux</strong>.<br />

“Randall has done a great job and has be<strong>en</strong><br />

very loyal to the program,” Glas said.<br />

“He’s deserving <strong>of</strong> the title and has earned<br />

it.”<br />

During Herbst’s four years as a UND<br />

assistant, the F<strong>ighting</strong> S<strong>ioux</strong> have posted a<br />

69-44 overall record (.611) while making<br />

four North C<strong>en</strong>tral Confer<strong>en</strong>ce postseason<br />

tournam<strong>en</strong>t appearances and an NCAA<br />

Division II North C<strong>en</strong>tral Region<br />

tournam<strong>en</strong>t appearance in 2003. S<strong>ioux</strong><br />

players have be<strong>en</strong> named NCC player <strong>of</strong><br />

the year three times during Herbst’s stint<br />

and have also won three All-American<br />

honors.<br />

Winona State (1993)<br />

Prior to coming to North Dakota,<br />

Herbst was the head coach at Waldorf<br />

Junior College in Forest City, Iowa, where<br />

he compiled a two-year record <strong>of</strong> 34-27.<br />

The Warriors ranked No. 1 in the country<br />

in scoring def<strong>en</strong>se in both <strong>of</strong> Herbst’s<br />

years, and Waldorf’s 19-12 record in 1999<br />

repres<strong>en</strong>ted the second-most wins in the<br />

history <strong>of</strong> the college.<br />

Prior to Waldorf, Herbst had stints as<br />

an assistant coach at Division II Lincoln<br />

Memorial (T<strong>en</strong>n.) and North Iowa Area<br />

Community College. North Iowa Area<br />

Community College won the 1995<br />

NJCAA National Championship while<br />

Herbst was an assistant.<br />

Herbst earned a bachelor’s degree in<br />

physical education from Winona State in<br />

1993. He played baseball and b<strong>asketball</strong> at<br />

Winona State, where he served as a team<br />

captain as a s<strong>en</strong>ior and helped the Warriors<br />

to back-to-back winning seasons in 1992<br />

and 1993. Prior to WSU, Herbst was a<br />

two-time all-region point guard and<br />

academic All-American at Waldorf Junior<br />

College. In his four years <strong>of</strong> playing<br />

college b<strong>asketball</strong>, Herbst scored 1,031<br />

points.<br />

A 1989 graduate <strong>of</strong> Beaver Dam<br />

(Wis.) High School, Herbst was the Little<br />

10 Confer<strong>en</strong>ce Player <strong>of</strong> the Year as a<br />

s<strong>en</strong>ior.<br />
