8 Coach Profiles FIGHTING SSIOUX MMEN’’S BBAASKETBAALL CCOAACHING TTREE One of the true measuring sticks of any successful individual, and especially a coach, is how prosperous those around him become. That has certainly been the case with UND coach Rich Glas in his 16 years as the Fighting Sioux head coach. One can see by the coaching tree below that playing for and coaching under Coach Glas has inspired many to follow in his footsteps at the collegiate or high school level. Randall Herbst was promoted to associate head coach of the Sioux men's basketball team on May 19, 2004. Herbst, who has spent the past four seasons as an assistant on Glas’s staff, is the first in Glas’s 16 seasons at UND that has held the distinction of being an associate head coach with the Fighting Sioux. “Randall has done a great job and has been very loyal to the program,” Glas said. “He’s deserving of the title and has earned it.” During Herbst’s four years as a UND assistant, the Fighting Sioux have posted a 69-44 overall record (.611) while making four North Central Conference postseason tournament appearances and an NCAA Division II North Central Region tournament appearance in 2003. Sioux players have been named NCC player of the year three times during Herbst’s stint and have also won three All-American honors. Coach Profiles RANDALL HERBST Associate Head Coach • 5th Season Winona State (1993) Prior to coming to North Dakota, Herbst was the head coach at Waldorf Junior College in Forest City, Iowa, where he compiled a two-year record of 34-27. The Warriors ranked No. 1 in the country in scoring defense in both of Herbst’s years, and Waldorf’s 19-12 record in 1999 represented the second-most wins in the history of the college. Prior to Waldorf, Herbst had stints as an assistant coach at Division II Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) and North Iowa Area Community College. North Iowa Area Community College won the 1995 NJCAA National Championship while Herbst was an assistant. Herbst earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Winona State in 1993. He played baseball and basketball at Winona State, where he served as a team captain as a senior and helped the Warriors to back-to-back winning seasons in 1992 and 1993. Prior to WSU, Herbst was a two-time all-region point guard and academic All-American at Waldorf Junior College. In his four years of playing college basketball, Herbst scored 1,031 points.
