52 2006-07 RECAP Fighting Sioux women’s basketball fans were treated to one of the finest seasons in program history in 2006-07, as UND rolled to a 32-4 overall record, winning a third straight North Central Conference title, a seventh straight NCC Playoff Tournament championship and an NCAA North Central Region crown along the way. UND advanced all the way to the NCAA Elite Eight Championship in Kearney, Neb., before falling to Florida Gulf Coast in the quarterfinals. However, the season was filled with highlights: FINEST FANS AND FACILITY UND is home to the best fans and best facility in Division II women’s basketball, according to the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association (WBCA) Superlative Awards announced in May. The Sioux have called the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center home since the 2004-05 season and are 54-5 (.915) alltime in the 3,064-seat facility. UND led the nation in attendance in 2006-07, with a total of 38,912 fans attended UND’s 19 home games at the Engelstad Sioux Center, over 3,000 fans more than any other Division II women’s basketball program. The Sioux utilized that home court advantage to the fullest last season, winning both an NCC playoff championship and a North Central region championship at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. It marked the third straight season Grand Forks was home to both tournaments. MR. MILESTONE Gene Roebuck’s 20th season as head coach of the Fighting Sioux proved to be highly memorable for several personal accomplishments. Roebuck won his 500th game at UND when the Sioux defeated Lock Haven, 77- 60, during the second game of the season. Roebuck then surpassed the 600-victory plateau for his career with an 86-59 victory at Bemidji State. Gene Roebuck Roebuck was named a 2007 Russell Athletic/WBCA Victory Club Award recipient for his 600th win. The all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division II women’s basketball history with an astonishing .857 winning percentage, Roebuck capped his season by nabbing his 10th NCC Coach of the Year award. SPECIAL K Junior forward Kierah Kimbrough emerged as one of the finest players in the nation in 2006-07, garnering Daktronics, Inc., All-America second team honors. Kierah Kimbrough The Greenbush, Minn., native led the team in scoring (15.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.6) and captured four consecutive NCC Player of the Week honors at the outset of the conference season. Kimbrough was also recognized for her play in the Feb. 5 issue of Sports Illustrated. WITH HONORS The Fighting Sioux were once again well represented when the NCC announced its annual award winners in early March. In addition to Roebuck’s 10th coach of the year honor, senior guard Carissa Jahner was named NCC Defensive Player
