4 2009 OUTLOOK By Ryan Powell Jeff Dodson has never been one to back down from a challenge and that was the primary reason he signed on to be the first Division I coach in the history of the Fighting Sioux baseball program. “The biggest reason I took this job was the simple fact of being able to build a Division I baseball program from the ground up,” Dodson said. “I felt like it would be a very intriguing task.” The first-year head coach will inherit a veteran club that posted a 14-23 record in its final season as a Division II member in the North Central Conference. The Sioux return seven position players that made at least 27 starts a year ago and a designated hitter that made 30 starts. Dodson also has a pitching staff that returns seven members, who made 55 appearances and 27 starts in 2008. Junior Andrew Gudmonson brings the most experience to the field for the Sioux with 72 career starts. 2009 Fighting Sioux Returning Starters Position Players Pos. Ht. Wt. I am nervous every year at the first game, so I am going to be right there with them. “It’s the butterflies you have, but as with any job or task, the more you are around it, the more you get comfortable with it, then the better you become at what you are trying to do.” However, having that experience will not guarantee anything for the Sioux starters from a year ago. Dodson opened the fall with a clean slate for the 29 players on his roster. Dodson and his coaching staff took advantage of the fall to work with the team and implement his way of doing things and he came away impressed with how the team adjusted to his style of coaching. “They have been absolutely tremendous,” he added. “They have done everything we have asked them to do. That is one thing as a coach that you can notice right away, that people are going to do what you ask them to do. If you hold them accountable for their setbacks and make sure they understand where their goals are and what they need to do - we will succeed here. “We need to make sure they understand being a part of an entire scheme and that they see the importance of their work in the overall program. I think that is one thing they have done already and that is knowing they are a vital piece of this program.” The fall practice time also allowed Dodson to get a feel for what type of players he will have on his roster this spring. Here is the first-year coaches’ take on what Sioux fans can expect to see from his club in 2009. Outfield “We have three or four guys out there that are all versatile in which spot they can play. There is Andrew Marek (Sr., East Grand Forks, Minn.), Josh Lagein (So., Devils Lake, N.D.) and a couple of other guys, Aaron Cook (Jr., Erskine, Minn.) and Joe Krivarchka (So., Lisbon, N.D.) along with Andy

Sadler (So., Grand Forks, N.D.), who will also do some catching for us this year. We have several guys that are capable and we should have a good defensive outfield.” Infield “We have several guys with a lot of experience. We have Andrew Gudmunson (Sr., Minot, N.D.) at third, who will also pitch some for us this year. Kyle Bolander (RFr., Hermantown, Minn.) will play third as well. He redshirted last year. “Josh Nelson (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) will be our shortstop and Jake Magner (Grand Rapids, Minn.) will be backing him up and playing some first base too. “Jabby Bakhit (Jr., Omaha, Neb.) will be back at second base for us and Daniel Ross (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) will be playing there as well. Dan is more of a utility guy for us, who can do several different things for us. Jabby will probably start at second and Josh at short for us. “At first base, we have several different guys. Anthony Brenner (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) and his younger brother Nick (So., Chaska, Minn.) will play there along with Magner. Those three will be competing for a lot of time at first this season. We just have to play pitch and catch in the infield.” Senior Andrew Marek batted .304 with three home runs and 26 RBIs during his first season with the Sioux in 2008. He was the only UND player to start all 37 games at the same position a year ago (left field). 2009 OUTLOOK Catchers “The guy right out of the gate who will have the best shot to be catching for us on opening day is Andrew Sadler (So., Grand Forks, N.D.). He is a guy who can play infield, outfield, catch and do a lot of things for us. “Ryne Jungling (Jr., Mandan, N.D.) is another guy that has improved so much over the fall working with (Assistant) Coach (J.C.) Field. And we have Jordan Buck (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.), who we are not sure if we will redshirt him or not. We are working all those guys behind the plate to find the best combination to work with our pitchers.” Pitchers “Roles are still yet to be defined when it comes to our pitching staff because we were only able to evaluate the scrimmages during the fall. We are going to use the first part of the season to find out what our kids are capable of. We have several guys that have a chance to start. Sam Anderson (So., Bemidji, Minn.) is a big, strong kid who has some durability I think. He was injured for part of last year. “Brandon Baumgartner (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had a very credible season as a freshman last season. We will count on him to give us some innings. Mike Lueck (Sr., Victoria, Minn.) has a chance. He probably has the strongest arm on the team, but for him it is a matter of being able to execute pitches. I feel like he has worked hard during the fall to get better. “Zach Salfer (RFr., Sleepy Eye, Minn.) is a guy who will have a chance to get some innings for us as a redshirt freshman. Derek Biermaier has probably been our best strike-thrower during the fall and David Lind (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) tried out during the fall and really impressed us. He commands the zone, has a couple of pitches and if he does not get shell-shocked when he goes in there, I think he will be a good pitcher for us. “Kyle Panning (RFr., Hamburg, Minn.) is another guy, depending on his health, who could eat up some innings for us. David Spies (So., Grand Forks, N.D.) is a lefty who will get some action and Cody Wilcoxson (Fr. Aurora, Colo.) is another lefty with some talent. He is a guy who can do some good things. “Two other guys that we expect to contribute are Jameson Benson (Jr., Karlstad, Minn.) and Scott Eul (Rosemount, Minn.). Both guys have good, live arms. Benson led the team in saves a year ago and will be a go-to-guy out of the pen again this year. Eul redshirted a year ago, but will see action for us this year.” 5
