Parent/Guardians, are you looking for a way to get
involved in Eastern high School? If so, then EPAC
may be the right avenue for you!
What is EPAC?
EPAC is the Eastern Principal/ Parent's Advisory
Committee. It is open to any parent or guardian
who would like to attend.
When are EPAC meeting held?
Meetings are held monthly at the high school. The
meeting alternate between times during the day and
in the evening. You can come to as many or as few
as you would like. There is no requirement on how
many meetings you would like to attend
What is the purpose/function?
There is a dual purpose to EPAC. One is to keep
open lines of communication between the school and
families. In addition, each meeting will have a
"theme". For example, our Guidance Department will
be at one meeting answering questions and our Athletic
Supervisor may be at another discussing EHS
athletics.
SNAC (The Special Needs Advisory Council )
The Special Needs Advisory Council (SNAC) meets every
other month to discuss ideas, questions, concerns, and
experiences they or others have had within our schools
as they relate to special education. This opportunity to
explore issues through group discussion and with appropriate
school district personnel allows them to serve as
an advocate for many others. It is also an opportunity
for Student Services staff to update parents on new information
as it pertains to district special education.
SNAC is made up of a parent representative of a special
education student from each school building. Parent
representatives are recommended by building principals.
The SNAC parent representative for Eastern High is Ann
Mulder.
Food Service Update
Beginning this September we have been using Meal
Magic Corporation’s point of sale system in our school
cafeterias instead of the Meal Time system we used in
previous years. All monies from last year have been
rolled over into the Meal Magic system. In order to
view your student’s purchase history, make online deposits
and/or put limits on your child’s spending, you
must set up a new account at www.sendmoneytoschool.
com. You should be receiving periodic emails if your
student’s account balance falls beneath $8.00. If you
have not received emails, please check your spam email
box for emails from mm@fhps.net. You may also need
to update your email address with the Food Service Office
by sending your current email address to
cpratt@fhps.net or aadams@fhps.net. If you have any
questions about Meal Magic, or setting up an account,
please contact the Food Service Department at 493-
Art Chicago Trip
Students from all three high
schools participated in an Art
Chicago Trip for Architecture
and the Art Institute. Great
Lakes Motor Coach provided
the transportation for 85 students
and staff who traveled
on Thursday, November the
15th. The students walked
through the business district
and theater district for two
hours viewing magnificent
buildings and mosaics that
were inside and outside in
courtyards and foyers.
Traveling down Dearborn students toured the Tiffany ceilings
in Macy's, the Marquette Building were the murals of
Father Marquette's voyage around the Great Lakes is displayed
in multiple glass panels. The Chase Building was
the next stop with Marc Chagal's tile masterpiece and Picasso's
Baboon sculpture next to the Daley government
skyscraper. The futuristic Corn Cob buildings were on the
tour as well as the Chicago tribune towers and the gold
guild Carbon building along Michigan Avenue.
A stop in Chicago is not complete unless the students visit
Millennium Park and have their picture taken by the Bean!
After lunch the students spent two hours inside the Art Institute
of Chicago admiring great art from all ages around
the world.
The National Merit Scholarship Program
To become a National Merit Scholar, students
must take the PSAT qualifying test in October of
their junior year. Program recognition is determined
by the PSAT score and the level of the
score to qualify vary from year to year. Once a
score level is determined, students are notified if
they are semifinalist or a commended student. At
this point, semifinalists complete an application
process and are considered to be a finalist. Semifinalists
represent less than 1 percent of the nation's
high school graduating seniors and are the
only participants who have an opportunity to advance
in the competition for some 8,200 Merit
Scholarship awards. Results of the Oct 2012 test
will be coming before the holiday break in December.
SENIORS
The Guidance Dept. strongly recommends seniors
get in applications for college admissions. Larger
public universities may offer an early notification
program where if applications are submitted they
will give you an admissions notification by a certain
date.
***All dates are the responsibility of the student.
Dates have been communicated in varying ways
to the Guidance Dept. To insure the most accurate
information, please refer to the colleges official
application.
Please go to connection.naviance.com/fheastern
to view when college application materials have
been submitted by your counselors.
For Seniors Only
We are excited to introduce a unique opportunity
for our senior students. The graduating Class of
2011 wanted to ensure that the future seniors at
FHE were empowered to make a difference in their
community through service, philanthropy and volunteerism.
As a result, they provided seed money to
institute the FHE Legacy Grant program.
The FHE Legacy Grant program will provide funds to
a select number of senior class student charitable
projects. Using their talents, passions and skills to
bringing to life their ideas, students will be exposed
to grant writing skills, the non-profit community,
and have a chance to positively impact their world.
Please see the EHS Main Office for more detailed
information and a grant application. We hope to
see this continue to grow and complement our senior
students’ educational experience as they prepare
to make their way in the world.
The potential for this program is tremendous. Our
hope is to make this a sustainable program through
each student’s time, talent and treasure. If you
would like to learn more, get involved or contribute
to the grant, feel free to contact one of our committee
members or email FHELegacy@gmail.com. We
would be happy to tell you more!
Juniors:
In October, counselors visited junior classrooms to discuss important information about academic and post secondary
planning. Topics included senior year course selection, college and career exploration, admission testing,
scholarships and financial aid information.
Junior Conferences: Juniors should schedule a meeting with their counselor sometime before Winter Break
to discuss important topics regarding future planning. Students can stop by the Guidance Office to schedule a
“one on one” meeting with their counselor.
