In Flanders (1993-2005)<br />

VTi (Vlaams Theater Instituut) has made it a tradition to underp<strong>in</strong><br />

discussion about trends and developments <strong>in</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g arts<br />

production with material from its database. That database<br />

provides ready-for-research <strong>in</strong>formation about professional<br />

productions by Flemish producers dur<strong>in</strong>g the period between<br />

1993-1994 and 2004-2005 – the twelve seasons governed by the<br />

‘Podiumkunstendecreet’ – the Flemish Parliament’s Perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Arts Decree. In Metamorphoses. Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts <strong>in</strong> Flanders<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 1993 (Metamorfose <strong>in</strong> podiumland) we distilled a series of<br />

tendencies from the material for the entirety of the perform<strong>in</strong>g arts.<br />

We ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed, among other th<strong>in</strong>gs, an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> production<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the exam<strong>in</strong>ed period, a tendency among <strong>in</strong>dividual artists<br />

to present themselves as <strong>in</strong>dependent field players, a tendency<br />

to produce <strong>in</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t venture and a dist<strong>in</strong>ct tendency towards<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationalization. Metamorphoses, <strong>in</strong> a nutshell, showed how<br />

radically the production of perform<strong>in</strong>g arts <strong>in</strong> Flanders and<br />

Brussels has changed s<strong>in</strong>ce the 1990s. In 1993 the <strong>theatre</strong><br />

company, with its relatively permanent team of contributors, was<br />

still the prototypical organization. Today we are see<strong>in</strong>g more and<br />

more <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary production nuclei, which ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> casual<br />

relationships with freelance artists and co-producers at home<br />

and abroad.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g the publication of this field analysis <strong>in</strong> 2007, we made<br />

<strong>in</strong>-depth studies of the results for the various sub-discipl<strong>in</strong>es and<br />
