Driv<strong>in</strong>g force beh<strong>in</strong>d the company is Karel Van Ransbeeck. He<br />
grew up at ‘Familietheater De Spiegel’, a puppet <strong>theatre</strong> company<br />
that was set up <strong>in</strong> 1965 by his father Fé. After he became<br />
the company’s artistic leader <strong>in</strong> 1989, he professionalized it and<br />
directed it towards <strong>music</strong> <strong>theatre</strong>.<br />
The creation process <strong>in</strong>variably starts from scratch: for each production,<br />
Theater De Spiegel marks out a number of l<strong>in</strong>es, but the<br />
f<strong>in</strong>al artistic result is largely determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the dynamism of, and<br />
the <strong>in</strong>put given dur<strong>in</strong>g the creation process itself.<br />

Founded <strong>in</strong> 1999, Judas TheaterProducties (JTP) became a professional<br />
company <strong>in</strong> 2005. JTP is a group of young makers who<br />
surround themselves with Flemish and Dutch <strong>theatre</strong> veterans.<br />
Judas TheaterProducties <strong>in</strong>tends to dist<strong>in</strong>guish itself <strong>in</strong> various<br />
ways as a production company of <strong>music</strong>als. On the one hand, they<br />
produce major <strong>music</strong>als such as The Party Is Over, by and with<br />
Anne Mie Gils and Pol Vanfleren, and The Last Five Years by Jason<br />
Robert Brown. Ganesha – Een perfecte god (Ganesha – A Perfect<br />
God, 2010) was JTP’s first entirely new creation. Allard Blom<br />
wrote the text <strong>in</strong>spired by a story by Terrence McNally. Director<br />
was Mart<strong>in</strong> Michel.<br />
The company also develops small-scale productions, and thus<br />
fills a gap <strong>in</strong> the <strong>music</strong> landscape. Je Anne (2009) is an <strong>in</strong>timate<br />
<strong>music</strong> <strong>theatre</strong> performance, based on the diary of Anne Frank.<br />
And last but not least, the company acts as a <strong>music</strong>al laboratory<br />
for young and recently graduated <strong>music</strong> <strong>theatre</strong> makers. As such,<br />
Judas TheaterProducties also operates as a th<strong>in</strong>k tank and <strong>in</strong>novation<br />
platform for <strong>music</strong> <strong>theatre</strong>.<br />
les rêveurs sont Maltraités<br />
Les Rêveurs Sont Maltraités (‘Dreamers are ill-treated’) is a<br />
structure around writer-director Jan Van Dyck. This young company’s<br />
first production, Achter de bossen, voorbij het moeras<br />
(‘Krabat’) (Beh<strong>in</strong>d the Woods, Beyond the Swamp) (2009) is a<br />
<strong>music</strong> <strong>theatre</strong> performance for eleven years-old and beyond.<br />
But Les Rêveurs Sont Maltraités does not want to restrict itself<br />
to productions for youngsters. Neither do they <strong>in</strong>tend to conf<strong>in</strong>e<br />
themselves to <strong>music</strong> <strong>theatre</strong> performance: text <strong>theatre</strong> – from<br />
the repertoire or new creations – for grownups is equally considered.<br />
For future projects, the company may leave the stage for<br />
other media and artistic environments, such as video and film,<br />
text and visual arts.<br />

LOD is a Ghent based production house for opera, <strong>music</strong>al and<br />
other forms of <strong>music</strong> <strong>theatre</strong>. It launches creative projects with a<br />
