Record number of
students take MME at
Digital Learning Center
The Digital Learning Center (DLC)
successfully tested 266 students for the
ACT/MME this week. This is the most
alternative students who have ever been
MME-tested at once.
The DLC started last fall and is an
alternative high school solution for
students aged 15-19 who need their
high school diploma and can complete
much or all of their work online. The DLC
graduated its first student in December.
The staff continues to do a fabulous
job engaging, retaining and setting high
expectations for our students.
JFK receives grant for anti-bullying program
JFK Social Worker Mia Hall and Principal Derek Adams took receipt of a $1,796 check from John Ploskonka of Meemic
Insurance Company Friday morning to help fund an anti-bullying program in the school. The program is coordinated through
the Committee for Children and according to Hall, is set to be implemented at JFK this fall. “If we start at the elementary level,
more children will be aware of the bullying problem and will be sensitive to the feelings of others,” said Hall. Hall applied for the
grant this past fall. The Meemic Insurance Company of Auburn Hills funded the grant. Ploskonka is an alumni of Ferndale Public
Schools and a graduate of both FHS and JFK (when it was Best Junior High School).
Basketball: UHS Boys in District
Championship for second year
All eyes are on University High
School boys after a busy basketball
season the boys and girls at FHS and
UHS.
UHS will play Southfield Bradford
Academy on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m.
at FHS for the District Championship.
If the team wins, it’s on to the
Regionals next week.
“They’ve had a great run the last
few weeks, coming together as a
team,” says Athletic Director Shaun
Butler, who praises the UHS team in its UHS & FHS Boys Basketball teams in a recent
matchup. The team plays tonight in the District
second consecutive year in the district
Championship game at FHS. Tip off at 5 p.m.
championships.
The UHS team got to this game after winning their semifinal game in double
overtime Thursday vs. Warren Fitzgerald, 64-57.
The FHS boys finished their season Monday in a loss to Warren Fitzgerald.
The UHS girls lost the FHS last week in District Finals. The FHS Eagles lost Thursday to
Detroit Country Day in Regional Finals by a score of 57-39. The FHS team saw their first
league championship since 1999.
According to Butler, the FHS girls basketball team “showed great resilience and is a
very smart and hard-working team, returning four starters next season.”
Congratulations, UHS!
Profile: UHS senior bowler is 2013 Division 2 Runner-Up
Yes, UHS has a Bowling Team
This is the first year of MHSAA competition for University High School’s Varsity Bowling Team and
team captain and UHS Senior William Holmes recently traveled to Jackson, MI to compete against
the best Division 3 bowlers. Holmes had earned the right to compete the previous weekend when
he placed third as a singles qualifier at the Division 3, Region 16 competition at Cherry Hill Lanes in
Dearborn Heights.
The MHSAA Tournament is the largest high school tournament in the country. “It speaks well of the
accomplishment achieved by Holmes,” says his coach and UHS teacher Jesse Ynclan. UHS Guidance
Counselor and experienced bowler Jane Harmon was also a coach for the team.
Meeting at 8:00 a.m., the 120 bowlers in the Airport Lanes began bowling their 6 qualifying matches.
Those with the highest number of total pins scored would advance to the Qualifying Block. Holmes started
slowly, and was in 60th place after three games. He then began his climb into position by rolling 191-227-
211 in the last 3 games, vaulting him into the no. 14 seed with 1136 pins, qualifying for the quarterfinals.
In the Sweet 16 Qualifying Block, bowlers are paired against each other in a two-game, total pin fall
match, with the highest score moving on. Matched against the no. 3 seed from Bridgeport High School,
William bowled in what many observers said was the most exciting match of the competition as both
athletes were determined to stay in the tournament. William lost the first game 223-215. With his back to
the wall and down 8 pins, he won the second game 206-180 to advance to the next round, 421-403. His
incredible run was underway.
Matched against the no. 6 seed Crosswell-Lexington High School bowler, he won 416-379 to move onto
the next round.
Against the no. 7 seed Fremont High School athlete, he would move on with a 417-395 win, putting him
in the Final Match against no. 9 seed Adam LaRoe from Napoleon High School.
UHS Senior William Holmes and
Coach Jesse Ynclan.
In the finals, Will won the first match 199-181, to move within ONE game of the Division 3 title. However in the last game, pocket splits in the second and
sixth frame would prove too hard to overcome. He lost the match 169-192, and the overall pinfall 368-373.
Afterwards, many bowlers and coaches came forward to congratulate Will for his tremendous bowling that day, and for the grace and poise which he
showed the entire tournament. He had bowled 14 games within the span of 7 hours, and had earned the title of Michigan 2013 Division 3 Runner Up.
The UHS Varsity Bowling Team won four matches and lost two this year. They recently bowled in the Ladywood Holiday Tournament, finishing 18th among
25 teams. Then in the state Division 3, Region 16 matches last week, the team finished fourth, missing the third and last playoff position by only 60 pins. Other
team members are: Jordan Evans (cocaptain), Demal Coleman, Michael Stevenson, Seth Keene, Tim Keene, and Marselis Fowlkes.
FMS Orchestra receives 1st division ratings at MSBOA
The Ferndale Middle School 7th and 8th grade combined orchestra received
straight 1st division ratings at MSBOA District Festival last week. A 1st division
rating signifies an excellent musical performance and is the highest rating possible.
Director of Orchestras Benjamin Moy was proud of how the students conducted
themselves both on stage and off: “One of the Walled Lake Western parents
working concessions at the festival made a point to talk to me when she found out I
was the director for Ferndale. She said, ‘I love it when Ferndale comes here.
Your students are always so polite and well behaved. Not all schools are.’ “
Michigan Science Center STARLAB comes to JFK!
The JFK-PTA brought the Michigan Science Center STARLAB to JFK Elementary School last week! Students in kindergarten
through 2nd grade and Special Education crawled into an inflatable dome planetarium where they were treated to a view of
•
the current Oak Park night sky in the middle of the day. The STARLAB projector lit up the dark dome with bright stars, constellations,
planets and moons. The students learned about our solar system, constellation and star names, and where the earth
fits in the star neighborhood. The kids were excited to learn that a Red Star named Betelgeuse lies directly in Orion’s Armpit!
FHS music students learn
teamwork, improv at Disney
Nearly 50 students from FHS’s Band, Orchestra and Choir
traveled to Florida over Winter Break in February. They attended
a workshop held at Epcot entitled, “Techniques of Teamwork
through Improvisation.” In this 3-hour program, students gained
insights into how improvisational theories can be applied to
real-life situations at home, school or in future careers. Every
student played a role in a mock production and were taught
professional communication techniques that, with practice, help
build confidence, unleash creativity and cultivate teamwork.
collegepreptips
A small group of parents, administrators, legislative and business representatives are working together on The Eagles Pledge, an initiative to provide or facilitate financial resources
and support services to help graduates of Ferndale High School pursue their dream of a post-secondary education. The Eagles Pledge meets on the fourth Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. each
month, at the Harding Administration Building, 2920 Burdette, Ferndale. Each week, eNews will feature checklists of information to help parents and children prepare for college at every
grade level. These college prep tips are from the U.S. Department of Education:
10th Graders: It’s not too early to plan for college!
Parents
• Take a look at your financial situation, and be sure you’re on the right track to pay for college.
• Talk to your child about the schools he or she is considering. Ask why those schools appeal to
your child, and help him or her clarify goals and priorities.
• Attend college fairs with your child, but don’t take over the conversation with the college
representatives. Just listen, and let your child do the talking.
• Register for and take exams for college admission. The standardized tests that many colleges
require are the SAT, the SAT Subject Tests, and the ACT. Check with the colleges you are
interested in to see what tests they require.
• Use the U.S. Department of Labor’s scholarship search to find scholarships for which you
might want to apply. Some deadlines fall as early as the summer between 11th and 12th
grades, so be prepared.
Summer Before 12th Grade
• Narrow down the list of colleges you are considering attending. If you can, visit the schools
that interest you.
• Contact colleges to request information and applications for admission. Ask about financial
aid, admission requirements, and deadlines.
• Decide whether you are going to apply under a particular college’s early decision or early
action program. Be sure to learn about the program deadlines and requirements.
• Use the FAFSA4caster financial aid estimator, and compare the results to the actual costs
at the colleges to which you will apply. To supplement any aid FAFSA4caster estimates you
might receive, be sure to apply for scholarships. Your goal is to minimize the amount of loan
funds you borrow.
