IMPI Warrior Robotics team raises $1,500
for this week’s State Championships
The FHS IMPI Warrior Robotics team successfully
raised nearly $1,500 last weekend in donations
from Ferndale residents and Garden Fresh Salsa!
The money was raised for this weekend’s Michigan
State Championship match at Eastern Michigan University.
It costs $4,000 for the team to attend.
Why the name IMPI? According to the group’s
mentor, Elin Matthews, IMPIs were the fiercest African
Warriors (the Zulus). “The name was picked because
we mentor a team in South Africa. Our symbol is the
Impi shield, but instead of spears we fight ignorance of
engineering and robotics with tools to build robots.”
They are a FIRST Robotics team and are in their 6th
year of competition, giving students a chance to work
alongside engineers and programmers to learn about
the robotics field. There are nine FMS and 21 FHS students
on this year’s team.
Each year, robotics teams from the area create a
game that a robot will have to play.
“The team meets every day for six weeks straight to design and build a robot,” says Matthews. “Our
students work alongside the engineers and programmers and learn how to apply skills and knowledge
just like those who work in the field. Working as a team to produce a final product on a time schedule and
within a budget is an important experience for all students, even if they end up not going into engineering
or programming.”
All competitions are played in an alliance of three partners so no team is ever the lone winner. This is so
teams will learn to cooperate and strategize together, and learn how to set aside ego for the common good
of the team.
This year’s robot was designed to shoot Frisbees and climb an 8-foot pyramid to score points. The FHS
robot is currently ranked 48th out of 212 teams.
The team is also supported by the Ferndale Education Foundation, the PTSA, the Schaeffler Group, IBM
and several area businesses.
Good luck at finals this weekend, Warriors!
Students asked to take anonymous
survey about drug/alcohol usage
The Southeast Oakland Coalition is seeking input from students of the Ferndale Schools
to answer survey questions about alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drug usage. All
information will remain entirely anonymous.
The students are asked about their District, grade level, typical grades, and questions
that ask how often in the past 30 days they or their friends have smoked cigarettes or
marijuana, drank, or used other drugs. It also asks from where they obtained substances and
how their parents would feel if they smoked marijuana.
According to Carly Podzikowski, the Program Director for the Southeast Oakland Coalition
in Ferndale, the developing the survey was a cooperative effort. The survey was developed
by the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities (ACHC) board members, and
Wayne State University Psychology Professor Dr. Darren Lubbers, who is a mental health professional
and has worked with many different authorities nationally in the prevention field.
The survey is now being conducted via the 14 coalitions in Oakland County. The coalitions,
including Ferndale, are Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition, Clarkston Coalition
for Youth, Clawson Community Coalition, Greater West Bloomfield Community Coalition
for Youth, Holly Area Youth Coalition, Huron Valley Community Coalition, Madison Heights
Community Family Coalition, North Oakland Community Coalition, Rochester/ Auburn Hills
Community Coalition, Royal Oak Community Coalition, Tri-Community Coalition, Troy Community
Coalition, and Waterford Coalition for Youth.
The link is http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SocialAccess2013. It is only a student survey,
but parents can certainly encourage their children to participate. “Anonymity is very important
to us, and this Survey Monkey link is a safe, secure way to report,” says Podzikowski.
The mission of the Southeast Oakland Coalition, started in 1997, is to bring together all
segments of the community to prevent substance abuse, especially among youth. For more
information about the Coalition, visit http://seoaklandcoalition.org/.
Career & Tech Ed students
headed to Comerica Park
to learn about careers
Seventeen Senior Career and
Technical Education students, as
a part of the FHS Business Management
and Administration
Program, participated in Career
Day at Comerica Park this week.
The “Tigers Class Outside Educational
Series” combined classroom
curriculum with baseball through
special presentations.
“All of the speakers had an
emphasis on hard work, creating
opportunities for internships, networking,
and staying focused on
goals,” said Charlotte Oliver, Career
& Technology teacher at FHS.
“Hard work, determination, a
great education, and being passionate
about what you do every
day can take you to places bigger
than you’ve ever imagined.
I often say to the students that
persistence beats resistance so
stay focused and the rewards will
come.”
Youth Dialogue Day on April 26 will
allow 6th graders to discuss peer issues
All of the District’s 150 sixth
graders have been invited to
Youth Dialogue Day events
on Friday, April 26 at Coolidge
Intermediate School, to help those
students prepare for the transition
into middle school from Coolidge
and John F. Kennedy Schools.
“For the past three years, the
Southeast Oakland Coalition (SEOC)
has been fortunate enough to partner
with Ferndale Public School District
as our fiduciary agent for the
Drug Free Communities Support
Grant which focuses on reducing 2011 Youth Dialogue Day exercises
drug and alcohol abuse, especially among youth,” said Carly Podzikowski, program director
for the SEOC, which is hosting the event.
The day will begin with breakfast and group ice breakers/dialogue. Students will be
asked questions to discuss during their dialogue times including, “What are the drug and
alcohol problems that you see in your school and/or community?” and “Starting today, what
is one thing I can do to help my peers make better decisions to stay away from drugs and alcohol?”
There will also be poster making and the students will have a chance to report their
“findings.” Distinguished members of the
community are being invited to attend the event at the students’ reporting time.
For more information about the Coalition, contact Carly Podzikowski at or Leonard
Holden of the Southeast Oakland Coalition at 248-752-8239. SEOC website is www.seoaklandcoalition.org.
FHS Basketball Coach Lloyd named
OAA Blue League Coach of the Year
Congratulations to FHS Varsity Girls Basketball Coach
Eric Lloyd who, in his first year in this position, earned the
OAA Blue League Coach of the Year. This big announcement
comes after the varsity girls won Districts this year and made
it all the way to Regionals, ending with a 21-4 record. “The
girls-they played! More credit to them than to me. I gave
them the plan and they followed it,” said Lloyd, who started as
Ferndale’s Alternative Education Basketball Coach in 2006-07
and led them to be the 2102 Sate Champs. The varsity team
will be graduating five seniors this year but Lloyd says with
the younger girls still there and coming up, “we should be
pretty solid next year.” Congratulations, Coach Lloyd!
[From the Coaches]
Thoughts of fallen friend, moment of silence
start the first track meet of season
On March 14, we lost an outstanding individual from our Ferndale Track Family. Mario
Campbell was a dedicated student athlete that was a role model to many and respected among his
teachers and coaches.
Our first home meet was on Tuesday, April 9. Despite the low temperatures, the rain and wind,
there was a obvious spirit and warmth in the air. Each and every athlete was anxious and excited to
get the track meet started. We had thoughts of our fallen friend. As we honored him in a moment of
silence, you could feel the strong presence of love for a young man who will truly be missed.
Every girl on our team showed determination and strength. We swept the field events aided by
the efforts of Morgan Cannon in the high jump and Chynna Garland in the sprints.
Our hurdle team of Monika Mitchell and Kevonna Brown really showed their perseverance as
the weather conditions became more grueling during the end of the meet. We would like to salute
all the girls and boys for such great efforts during this emotional time. We would also like to thank
the Ferndale community for the support we’ve received it has been unmatched.
on tap for attendees of this year’s Talent Show for Coolidge Intermediate Show. More than 60
students will be participating in the Coolidge’s first-ever Talent Show on Saturday, April 27 at
7 p.m. at Ferndale High School. A group of parents and students are working to put together
the show and the nearly 60 students have been rehearsing Tuesday-Thursday (above)
during the week to make sure the show is a success. In fact, the young talent show producers
are getting help from FHS thespians who are mentoring them along the way. The show has
also been helped by community member Francine Hachem, who is coaching their on-stage
presence. Tickets are just $5 a person (available in the Coolidge office) and proceeds will help
fund the Cool Kid Camp Fund for students. The event is being coordinated by students and
A student heart screening program developed by Beaumont Health System
Every year, students die from sudden cardiac arrest
due to abnormal heart structure or abnormal rhythms.
To help detect young people who are at risk for
sudden cardiac arrest, Beaumont offers free heart
checks to high school students that include:
• medical history evaluation
• blood pressure check
• physical examination
• electrocardiogram, or ECG
• echocardiogram, quick look
This type of cardiac screening is generally not included
in the routine physical required before participating in
school sports. The Beaumont Healthy Heart Check
Student Heart Screening is designed for high school
students ages 13 to 18. Younger children are not
typically screened because structural abnormalities
including abnormal heart muscle thickening, which is
the most common cause of sudden death in the U.S.,
do not become apparent until later in adolescence.
Date:
Time:
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Got School Breakfast?
Does your child miss
breakfast-- no time or
simply isn’t hungry first
thing in the morning?
Here’s a solution:
School Breakfast!
School breakfast provides 1/4 of your child’s daily nutrition needs
and research shows breakfast provides fuel for school and boosts
brain power. Breakfast at school is affordable, too. It’s available for
all students and if you qualify for free or reduced price lunch, you
also qualify for the free or reduced price breakfast.
Encourage your child to join us every day for school breakfast.
