FHS Teacher earns prestigious Fellowship 

C 

ongratulations to FHS Science Teacher Maurice Telesford who recently was awarded a fellowship 

for the 2013 Siemens STEM Institute this summer at the Discovery Communications headquarters 

outside Washington, D.C. He was one of 50 middle and high school STEM educators 

selected from across the country. 

“Maurice Telesford is a wonderful teacher and so deserving of such an 

honor. He works tirelessly to incorporate new and innovative ideas into his 

daily lessons. Whether he’s teaching, coaching or mentoring, Maurice inspires 

his students to always do their best and to soar to higher heights,” said FHS 

Principal Lisa Williams. “This fellowship will afford him the opportunity to hone 

in on those skills as well as enhance teaching and learning in the STEM field!” 

Siemens STEM Institute is a one-of-a-kind program that promotes handson, 

real-world integration of science, technology, engineering, and math 

(STEM) in the classroom. Telesford’s week will be filled with guest speakers, 

field trips to leading institutions, observation of real-world applications of FHS Science Teacher 

STEM subject matter, and networking opportunities with peers from across the Maurice Telesford 

country. According to the Siemens Stem Academy website, the Fellows will 

also be exposed to leaders, personalities and innovators whose work across STEM disciplines shape 

and define our world today. 

“I will have an opportunity to continue to grow and learn as a science educator. This experience 

will hopefully provide me with resources and skills that I can bring back to FHS to help engage stu-

Telesford: ‘Kids are naturally interested in science’

dents in science by showing them relevant applications in technology and engineering,” said Telesford, 

who is completing his fourth year of teaching at FHS. He has BS in Chemical Engineering from U of M, an 

MS in Secondary Science from Harvard University, and has taught in Spain. 

Here at FHS, he teaches chemistry to juniors and physics to freshmen. “I think kids are naturally 

interested in science because they are curious about their environment and how the world around them 

works. What helps activate their curiosity is exposing them to phenomena that challenge their current 

understanding of the world around them. Also, students get a real sense of satisfaction from being 

allowed to explore science content with some guidance, but also the freedom to try to figure things out on 

their own. As science educators, our ultimate job is to help students learn to pose scientific questions and 

gain the ability to design experiments that can move them closer to obtaining an answer to their scientific 

question.” 

Telesford applied for the fellowship about three months ago after submitting a resume, references, 

answering two essay questions, and submitting a video of innovating engineering projects/lessons. His 

interest in science came naturally to Telesford; his mother is a medical physician and his father made 

artificial legs. He grew up wanting to create artificial organs! Congratulations, Mr. Telesford!

Thank you, Champions 

Dear Ferndale Schools Community, 

We wanted to take a moment to thank all the 119 Champions who joined us last night at 

Coolidge for the first of four meetings, and to share a few reflections with everyone. 

Our first thoughts were of pride. All districts have problems, yet few district communities 

have had the courage to delve so deeply and honestly into the challenges we are facing. Many 

strategic plans only look at the surface level and never brave what lies below. So far everyone 

who has participated has done so with civility and appreciation, even during the toughest 

conversations. 

The findings Project Innovations shared last night were categorized according to the 

Strategic Plan’s areas of focus: Academic Achievement Gap, Race, Enrollment, Trust and 

Collaboration, and also Special Education. Some of the findings were difficult, and many findings 

confirmed our strengths and opportunities. Anyone interested in viewing the PowerPoint 

from our first meeting may do so on the district website (click here), or starting next week the 

video will be available on our cable channel. 

What was most exciting was the trust and enthusiasm people were voicing in the process. 

We could not be more pleased to hear all our Champions plan to return and hope others will 

join as many meetings as possible. The next meetings will also be at Coolidge on May 28, June 

6 and June 19. 

Planning is only the first stage. Following the Champions Meetings we will continue 

coming to you with ways to stay involved. 

So on behalf of the entire Board, we sincerely thank each of you for helping to advance all 

of our district kids.

Oakland Schools recognizes 3 Ferndale 

Teachers for ‘Teacher of the Year’ Awards 

Three teachers from Ferndale Schools were honored this week at the 

annual Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year ceremony at 

Oakland Schools. Coolidge Teacher Ruth Tavalire was selected at the 

elementary level, FMS Teacher Jason Gillespie was selected at the middle 

school level, and Ryan Dunlap was selected at the high school level. 

The Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards are 

presented annually to honor and reward Oakland County teachers who 

have achieved, through their effort and example, the highest standards 

of excellence in their profession.

5th Graders travel to Detroit Opera House 

Approximately 130 5th graders from Coolidge and Kennedy traveled to the Detroit 

Opera House to see the opera The Happy Prince on April 26. The opera was performed 

by students ages 8-16 including Kennedy’s own Klare Siple who is a member 

of the preparatory chorus of the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus. 

The opera is based on a story by Oscar Wilde and deals with the themes of sacrifice and care 

for others. The students also collected canned goods to be taken to Cass Community Social 

Services. 

Before the field trip, students acted out scenes from the opera in costume and with 

props. They discussed many other aspects of the experience including dress and decorum 

and talked about the Detroit Opera House itself. “I explained that the setting of the opera, 

originally an unnamed city in Europe, was changed to Detroit. This performance, always of 

professional quality, is a revelation for the students who attend,” said Mary Brown, music 

teacher at Coolidge. The trip is supported by Michigan Youth Arts and the Michigan Council 

for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Test drive a Dodge at 

Alumni Game, earn funds 

for athletic programs 

The Dodge brand and Northland 

Chrysler Jeep Dodge will team up with 

Ferndale High School for a Dodge Booster 

Club Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11 

at the FHS Alumni Baseball Tournament. 

Everyone in the community is invited to 

come out to test drive the 2013 Dodge 

Durango, Journey, Grand Caravan and 

Dart. 

For each brief test drive taken during 

the fundraiser, Dodge brand will donate 

$20 to the baseball, football, and soccer 

programs at FHS. The games are scheduled 

to run from 12-5 p.m.

coach receive an honorary achievement 

award and more! Northland Chrysler 

Jeep Dodge will provide the vehicles, 

and dealership staff will be on hand to 

assist with the fundraising test drives. 

“We enjoy working with the parents 

and students in our community and look

Lakes Business Center at Chrysler Group 

LLC. “The Dodge school fundraisers are 

friendly and fun for everyone. Stop by

At Orientation you will receive valuable information about the Preschool program including your child’s class assignment & schedule!

Kindness 

Corner 

Ferndale High School has a new program to 

acknowledge students and staff who are caught 

doing an act of kindness. Those individuals are 

given a kindness card and when students receive 

three kindness cards, they receive a rubber wristband 

and their name on the marquee outside the school. 

More than 50 cards have been given out to date. FHS 

has a designated area called the Kindness Corner with 

all the names of those who have received a kindness 

card.

FHS Summer Academy 

begins June 24 

Ferndale High School students will have an opportunity to 

recover lost credits or improve their grades this summer by enrolling 

in the 2013 Ferndale High School Summer Academy. The Summer 

School Academy is also geared to give high school students an 

opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge necessary for success. 

Classes begin on Monday, June 24 and the last day is July 23. 

FHS students may pre-register for summer classes with their 

counselors any time before the official registration which is June 19 

for FHS students and June 20 for all students. All students must get 

their summer classes approved by their guidance counselor. 

All classes will be held at Coolidge Intermediate School, 2521 

Bermuda. Students and their 

families must provide their own 

transportation. Tuition rates for In- 

District students are $125 for one 

class and $200 for two classes. Out 

of District students pay $225 for 

one class and $375 for two classes.

Youth Assistance Summer Camp opportunities 

for students this year: 

•Camp Skyline July 14-19 

(overnight camp – ages 7-14) 

•City of Ferndale Day Camp

•YMCA Day Camp beginning June 10 

(on Eleven Mile in Royal Oak) 

Last year, 61 kids enjoyed overnight 

and day camps. Each week is a 

different theme at the day camps and 

there is a scholarship for one (1 week) 

session. Parents are advised to turn 

in applications as soon as possible, 

space is limited. Children who have 

attended camp previously will be put 

on a waiting list; children who have 

never attended camp will have first 

priority this year. 

All applications will require approval 

of a school principal or counselor.

Coolidge Orchestra students show appreciation for teachers 

Coolidge 5th grade Orchestra students (above), under the direction of Tim Burke, played 

Strings Royale and Swing Into Strings for Coolidge staff during Teacher and Staff 

Appreciation week. Both Coolidge 5th and 6th grade orchestra students performed for 

the teachers and staff on Thursday as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The staff was 

served lunch in the media center, right outside the orchestra classroom. “I decided it 

would be a nice way to say thank you for all of the support we get from the staff by 

having the kids give an impromptu performace. After the students got to class, tuned 

and warmed up, we just took our instruments, music and stands out to surprise the 

teachers (The kids were a little surprised, but excited too!),” said Burke. The 6th grade 

orchestra performed Notable Neighbors and Rip Raorin’ Fiddlin’.

JFK Award nominations 

sought for seniors 

Nominations of outstanding seniors are 

being sought from each of Ferndale’s 

high schools (FHS, UHS, DLC) for this 

year’s prestigious John Fitzgerald Kennedy 

Awards. The John F. Kennedy Award provides 

an annual opportunity 

for members of the community, 

teachers, and administrators 

to nominate and recognize 

students who demonstrate an 

outstanding combination of 

basic scholarship and individual 

responsibility from Ferndale High School, 

University High School and Digital Learning 

Center. One boy and one girl from each 

school will receive the award. 

The nominees should exemplify the 

goals of public education. Nominators are 

asked to compose a brief summary stating 

the reasons for the nomination with comments 

on how the nominee exemplifies the 

following: Integrity, Athletic Contributions, 

Maturity, Cultural Contributions, Industry, 

Citizenship, Scholarship, School Support, 

Community Support, and High Aspirations 

(personal goals).

The FHS Bands will be performing their Annual Spring Concert on Saturday, May 18, 

at 7 p.m. in the FHS Auditorium. Featured on the program is the first FHS Alumni Band

An Alumni Band Rehearsal will be held in the late morning on May 18. Musicians will 

be contacted with more details and music to practice. 

There is no admission charge for the concert. 

An Alumni Band Reunion will be held after the concert at Como’s Pizza, outside

• The 2013 FHS Spring Concert on Saturday, May 18, will feature the 

premier of the Ira Hearshen-commissioned piece, tentatively titled, “Eight Mile 

Rhythm,” based on three iconic Motown tunes. This concert will also feature an 

FHS Alumni Band, for the first time in about 30 years. 

Watch Board of Education Meetings 

• Did you know the District has a local cable channel, 19 on Comcast and 15 

on Wowway, that airs general information about the school district and the 

monthly Board of Education meetings? The meetings are broadcast on a 

standard schedule every day: 5 a.m., 11 a.m., 4 p.m., 8 p.m. If you ever find 

that the station is not broadcasting properly, please email shall@ferndaleschools.org, 

so we can address the issue right away.
