A Royal Wedding:
Q and U Marry at Roosevelt
On Thursday, April 21 Roosevelt Primary
Kindergarten students witnessed the
marriage of the letters Q and U. 'Q' and 'U'
are always in words together...quit, quilt,
quick etc... and the teachers thought
the ceremony would be a great way to
remember the pairing. The ceremony was
held outside, with receptions following in each classroom.
The students listened to the ceremony, performed by kindergarten
teacher Heather Urbanowicz, and blew bubbles at the happy
couple as they walked down the aisle. After the ceremony, students
(who were wearing 'U' crowns and 'Q' veils) picked flowers
from the aisle and gave them to the bride and groom.
Youth Dialogue Day for 6th Graders
All Ferndale Schools 6th
grade students (from
Coolidge and Kennedy)
participated in Youth
Dialogue Day on Thursday,
April 28. Youth Dialogue
Day was an opportunity for
the students to have their voices heard by adults
in their community. Adult facilitators led groups
and had discussions about alcohol, drugs, and
dangerous/destructive behavior - what the students
thought about those topics, what they've
observed in their communities, and what can be
done to make a difference in their community.
The day concluded with students making signs
stating that they are 'Above the Influence.'
The event was sponsored by the Southeast
Oakland Coalition and a Drug Free Communities
Grant. The Coalition would like to say thanks to
all who participated, and a special thank you to
FHS Students Experience “Reality Store”
Ferndale High School juniors
participated in Reality Store
last week - a career simulation
activity sponsored by Career
Focused Education where
students discover what it takes
to be financially independent
in today’s world. The activities
were designed to force students
to budget their salary based on
choices they made in housing,
insurance, transportation, food,
entertainment, and other of
life’s necessities. Through their Education Development Plan, students
identified a career within a chosen a career pathway. Based on this career
choice, students were given a pre-determined salary and benefits which
is recorded in their own personal checkbook registry.
Reality Store is comprised of a series of stations, each focusing on a different
area of need. Community volunteers, administrators, and teaching
staff maintained the stations and provide direction to the students. At
each station, students were provided choices about the goods and/or
services available and they had to choose one option and budget for it.
Before moving to the next station students paid their “monthly bills” by
deducting the amount they spent from the salary assigned to them. For
example, at the housing booth, students could choose a one-bedroom
efficiency apartment or a five-bedroom home. At the end of the activity,
students will have learned the answer to the question, “Can my chosen
career support my future plans?”
FMS Students Participate in Wold's Vote
Students in Carolyn Ward's Diversity class at FMS
took part in the vote for the World’s Children’s
Prize on Monday, April 18th. A jury of 10 or so
children from around the world, most of them
whose rights have been strongly violated in
some way, choose three people who work for
the rights of the child to be nominated to win
the prize--$100,000 to further their good work.
Ward's class has been studying these nominees
and the World’s Children’s Prize, and the students
had the chance to vote on who they thought
deserved the prize. 7-million children take part
in this vote around the world; only children
ages 10-17 may vote. For more information, visit
Coolidge Students Attend Opera
On March 25 the entire
5th grade at Coolidge
Intermediate School
traveled to the Detroit
Opera House to see a
children’s opera, The
Master of Illusions, based
on Hans Christian Andersen’s
story, The Snow
Queen. The opera was
performed by MOTCC,
Michigan Opera Theater
Children’s Chorus, so all of the performers were
between the ages of 10 and 16.
Mary Brown, Coolidge Vocal Music Teacher, organized
this event. She said, "This was a beginning
experience in opera for our students, and many
of them had never been to the Detroit Opera
House. This trip provided a great opportunity
for the students to dress up and be classy, and
they represented themselves and Coolidge with
style!" Before the trip, all classes read and acted
out scenes from the opera complete with costumes
and props. The students knew the whole
story except for the ending.

At the April Board
meeting, several students
and student groups
were honored for their
accomplishments.
Ferndale High School Junior Chevez Farris
was congratulated for earning the status of 2011
MHSAA All-State in Wrestling. Chevez earned
All-State recognition for placing 3rd in the 2011
Michigan High School Athletic Association State
Wrestling Meet for the 171-pound weight class.
Chevez finished this season with an outstanding
46-6 record, 32-5 record, finishing second at the regional
championship, and first at districts, the Holt
Invitational and the Ferndale Invitational.
His outstanding season extended the Ferndale
High School wrestling teams’ streak of 12 consecutive
years with at least one All-State Wrestler.
His coach Charlie Morgan praises Chevez for his
dedication to his sport, saying, “As our top wrestler,
Chevez has demonstrated a strong work ethic,
determination and willingness to be coached. He
has steadily improved over the last three years, and
we know he will continue to strive to reach his full
potential as a student-athlete and a young adult.”
The Board recognized the Ferndale Alternative
High School Basketball Team of 13 students
who finished their 2011 season with an outstanding
second place state championship finish,
advancing to the Final Four Tournament sponsored
by the Michigan High School Alternative Athletic
Association for the fourth year in a row. The season
was highly successful on the court with a record of
19 wins and two losses.
Their success was due in large part to the dedication
and leadership of their coach Eric Lloyd, who
also serves as the Student Support Advisor at
Jefferson Education Center, and assistance from
Lawrence Davis, Wahad Muhammad, and Randy
Royal.
Danny at the
meeting. Mr. Ivory praised him
for his maturity and initiative,
saying this student was born to
be a leader of the caliber of the
Air Force Academy.
The University High School
Girls Robotics Team was recognized
for their outstanding
performance at Robofest 2011. The UHS robotics
team is part of the GET IT program, sponsored
by the Michigan Council of Women in Technology
Foundation to encourage girls to pursue a
career in STEM-related fields (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics). The club includes
girls who participate in the MCWTF Web Design
competition first semester and on the Robotics
Team second semester.
This year, the UHS Robotics Team, was represented
at Robofest 2011 by two teams, the only all-girl
teams in the competition.
Robofest is an annual robotics competition sponsored
by Lawrence Technological University which
challenges teams of students to design, build
and program robots using any time of robotic kit
with a goal of inspiring an interest in engineering,
computer programming, science and technology.
The Rob-i-tar team won first place in the Senior
Division at the district robotics competition.
The Rob-i-tar team members are junior Jade
McCord, sophomore Alexis Thompson and
freshman Sierris Smith. At the meeting, the
team demonstrated how Rob-i-tar, a robotic
guitar and a training tool, teaches children how to
read music. Their advisor Julie Patterson says this
program is by far the most sophisticated program
any of her teams have ever designed. Rob-i-tar has
qualified among the top teams from each US and
international competition to compete at the 2011
World Robofest Championship scheduled for May
7, 2011 at Lawrence Tech.
The second team, Temp-a-tor, finished in second
place in their division at the district competition,
and although typically only one team per district
advances to States, their performance garnered
them a special invitation from the director of the
competition at Lawrence Technological University
to move on to the state competition.
The Temp-a-tor team members are sophomore
LaDonna Scott, sophomore Brittany Carter,
sophomore Ariel Hardmon and freshman Carla
Gibson. They demonstrated how Temp-a-tor,
a bath water tester to protect babies from scald
injuries. In preparation for the state competition
and at the advice of district judges, the team
added an additional function to their robot. Even
though this team did not qualify for nationals, they
showed noteworthy perseverance and problemsolving
skills the morning of the competition by
programming not one, but two broken computer
components on their robot in time to compete.
District’s 2001 Bonds, dated October 24,
2001 and maturing May 1, 2012 through
May 1, 2022. This refinancing process will
save taxpayers over a million dollars.
Appointed Jim Pfleger to attend the Oakland
Schools ISD Budget Review Committee
meeting and bring the information
back for Ferndale Board approval.
The administration is working on the
2011-2012 budget which will be presented
at the June Board meeting.
Human Resources Report
Received the report of the Board Staff
Relations Committee.
Accepted the resignation of Lou-Anne
Thomas, effective March 29, 2011.
Accepted the resignation of UHS teacher
Mike Kostoff effective June 30, 2011.
Approved ratification of tentative a FEA
contract for the 2009-2012 school years.
Approved, the regrettable, but prudent
action to issue layoff notices to 64 teachers.
This annual process, conducted after
a thorough review of staffing and budget
needs, occurs in order to provide flexibility
to maintain full programming and
services while accommodating significant
increases in benefit and retirement
costs, other inflationary pressures, and
respond to changes in district and build-
6
ing enrollment. Furthermore, the district
is planning for these increases without
certainty of the level of funding provided
by the State of Michigan, as there are
indications of serious funding reductions.
Curriculum & Instruction Report
Received a report on 2010 MEAP Data
presented by Elementary Curriculum
Coordinator Pauline Nagle. She stressed
that the data received to-date is defined
as “raw data” that includes all students
who took the test, even new students
who have been in the district less than a
year. Later in the year, refined data will
be provided which removes those new
students, and adds any students who
had attended FPS and moved to another
Michigan school.
Nagle explained how curriculum experts
evaluate the MEAP scores, looking more
closely at trends over several years to see
growth, rather than year to year changes,
both at the state level and district level.
In areas where there may be inconsistency,
the curriculum team will dig deep
to determine how to improve instruction,
such as focusing on early elementary
reading comprehension, for example.
She emphasized that the district focus,
is now the national focus as well: Every
child, focus every day – everyone needs
to show growth.
Approved the Head Start report
Approved new curriculum for high
school science, including Biology, Physics
and Honors Physics.
Approved new biology and physics textbooks
and teaching materials.
Approved Middle School science curriculum:
7th Grade is general science
with update on textbooks, 8th Grade essential
standards from high school earth
science course, with new textbooks also
approved.
Superintendent’s Report
Enrollment guidelines regarding providing
proof of residency guidelines have
been changed. Now, new students’ parents
will be required to provide a valid,
up-to-date driver’s license with in-district
address.
A Special Board Meeting will be held
Monday, May 9 at 5:30 pm to discuss
facilities needs with a presentation by Bill
Weinrauch from TMP.
Approved a joint resolution supporting
the Michigan School Aid Fund remaining
Dedicated to K-12 Education, approved
by all the district’s bargaining units. As
of this signing, Ferndale Schools was the
only district in Oakland County agreeing
to a joint resolution like this, which
has been shared with elected officials
across the state. This resolution is posted
on the district website here: http://www.
ferndaleschools.org/indexlinks/JointResolution_2011.pdf
The Board approved the Superintendent's
evaluation.
School Funding Crisis - Ask Lansing to Uphold Proposal A
New Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has proposed
an unprecedented shift in School Aid resources
from K-12 schools to universities and community
colleges. Ferndale Superintendent Gary
Meier opposes the proposed raid on the School
Aid Fund. He says, “The proposal to share the
School Aid Fund with community colleges and
universities is not what voters agreed to in the
legislation (Proposal A) which created the current
public school funding structure. I believe, as
do my colleagues across the state, that the School Aid
Fund should remain dedicated to K-12 education as Michigan
voters agreed to do when approving Proposal A in 1994.”We can't allow
the budget to be balanced on the backs of our children. The budget proposed
by Governor Snyder will devastate our schools. We can't let that happen. Our
children deserve better. We deserve better. If we don't stand up for our children,
no one else will. It's time to draw a line in the sand and send the message that
we won't tolerate these cuts. This budget isn't shared sacrifice — it's forcing our
children to pay the price for poor decisions.
Meier and other education leaders, including the Michigan Association of School
Boards, want Michigan taxpayers to know that the School Aid Fund, as it stands
now, is healthy. Meier asks Ferndale Schools families, staff and community
members to ask the legislature to keep the promise of Proposal A and keep the
School Aid Fund exclusively for K-12 education. If the legislature rejects the governor’s
proposal, foundation allowances could actually increase by $260 rather
than the significant cuts Snyder has proposed.
Tell them to keep the promise to the
voters and children of Michigan.
Here is a summary of those who serve our school district:
Governor Rick Snyder, Rick.Snyder@michigan.gov
Senator Vincent Gregory, 14th District, senvgregory@senate.michigan.gov
Representative Ellen Cogen-Lipton, 27th District, ellenlipton@house.mi.gov
Representative Rudy Hobbs, 35th District, rudyhobbs@house.mi.gov
The Ferndale Football Program
6th Annual Eagles’ Nest Golf Outing
May 25 th , 2011 @ Greystone Golf Course in Romeo, MI
Hello and Happy Golf Season! It is time again to prepare for our 2011 fundraiser to benefit the
Ferndale Eagles Football Program. We will be following the same format as last year’s
event. We plan to fill the golf outing with 156 golfers and another 40 dinner guests. Between the
golf outing, hole-sponsorships, the silent auction, and the 50/50 raffle, we were able to fund
numerous projects related to the athletic program at Ferndale High School.
The Eagles’ Nest is a non-profit booster club that has been revitalized with some very
dedicated people. With the assistance of our generous area businesses, and through participation
the annual scramble, the Eagles’ Nest has been able to raise money for our Ferndale
Football team student/athletes.
The Eagles’ Nest fully recognizes the dire economic times and we are even more appreciative
of the participation of the business community and supporters. As the school’s athletic budget is
shrinking, your assistance becomes imperative.
We are diligently seeking sponsorship for and participation in our golf outing. Every dollar
generated is another dollar saved and used for our athletes and program. This money pays for
camps, equipment, team meals, food for the concessions, and is tax-exempt. Your help over the
past three years have allowed us to provide much needed training equipment for our players that
the district could not afford. We have also purchased equipment for the high schools weight
training facility which is used by all student athletes.
Sponsorship would also help the John Bassier Scholarship. The Eagles Nest has awarded ten
$1000.00 scholarships since 2008. The first two recipients are attending the prestigious Case
Western Reserve University in Ohio and the historic Morehouse College in Atlanta. The
Eagles’ Nest was established to help our Ferndale High School student/athletes in the
football program attain their athletic goals and aspirations, through the use of better equipment
and improved training in current methods, and also assist in pursuit of their educational goals,
through the John Bassier Scholarship Program.
We are reaching out and asking area businesses to help support the Ferndale Eagles’ Nest
mission of giving every Ferndale High School football player the opportunity to be the best
student and student/athlete they can be. In the classroom and on the field, the skills, education,
and experiences gained in environments where teamwork is essential, can be applied throughout
life.
Please consider sponsoring a hole, entering your foursome, bidding on and/or providing silent
auction items, purchasing 50/50 raffle tickets, and/or joining us for dinner. We truly appreciate
your generosity and dedication to our student/athletes. Feel free to contact us with any
questions. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2011!
Dear Students and Parents,
Ferndale Public Schools
Summer Band and Orchestra 2011
During the summer, it is easy for kids to say “I’ll practice next week,” and soon it is next month,
then the new school year, and “next week” never happened. That is why we are happy to offer
Summer Band and Orchestra!
This three-week program will run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, from
July 11 to July 28, and the final concert will take place Thursday, July 28 th at 7:00 PM. All
instructional sessions of the program will take place at Ferndale High School. Mr. Jamison and Mr.
Moy will lead the ensemble rehearsals, and sectional coaches will offer small group instruction
every single day.
The program is open to all band and orchestra students with at least one year of experience who are
entering grades 5-8 in the fall of 2011. Thanks to generous donations from the Ferndale Fine
Arts Boosters and the Ferndale Middle School Music Boosters, we are able to reduce the cost
from $80 to $65 for students who are currently enrolled in the Ferndale Public Schools. This
is a great opportunity to keep playing over the summer, and to get individualized small group
instruction. The daily schedule will be as follows:
Students entering 5th and 6th Grade
9:00-10:30 Full Ensemble Rehearsal
10:30-10:45 Break
10:45-11:30 Sectionals
Students entering 7th and 8th Grade
9:30-10:15 Sectionals
10:15-10:30 Break
10:30-12:00 Full Ensemble Rehearsal
The sectional lessons are one of the best aspects of the program. These smaller groups provide far
greater focus and individualized instruction than can exist during the school year and are instrument
specific – every instrument or section will have its own class, even if there are only a few of a
given instrument. Expert players and teachers will lead each class, so students will have excellent
instruction in the unique issues for his/her instrument.
As you can see, participation only takes a few hours of a student’s time, plus practice on his/her
own – and still leaves them afternoons, evenings, and long weekends. But for that little time, the
payoff will be enormous. We attribute a lot of the success of the Ferndale music program over the
past few years directly to the Summer Band and Orchestra program.
So please, sign up for summer band and orchestra right away, and don’t miss out on this excellent
opportunity to not only keep all the skills you gained this year, but get an edge on your peers in the
fall.

If you plan to participate in Summer Band and Orchestra, please fill out the section below, detach
and return it with payment to any of the instrumental music teachers in Ferndale. The deadline to
return applications is Friday, June 10, 2011. If you have individual questions or concerns, please
call Mr. Jamison at (248) 586-8646, or Mr. Moy at (248) 586-8647. We hope to see you this
summer!
Please include cash or money order (payable to Ferndale Middle School Music Boosters) in the
amount of $65. Due to a high instance of bounced checks, we are unable to accept checks at this
time. If you have any questions regarding payment, please contact us.
HELPING YOU LIVE A
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.
Nutrition
Niblets
5 Steps to a Great Lunch
Whether you pack or buy your lunch, follow these
guidelines:
1. Choose fruits and vegetables. Fruits and
vegetables are like hitting the jackpot when it
comes to nutrition. They make your plate more
colorful and they're packed with vitamins and fiber.
2. Know the facts about fat. Kids need some fat in
their diets to stay healthy — it also helps keep you
feeling full — but you don't want to eat too much of
it. Fat is found in butter, oils, cheese, nuts, and
meats. Some higher-fat lunch foods include french
fries, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, macaroni and
cheese, and chicken nuggets.
3. Let whole grains reign. "Grains" include breads,
cereals, rice, and pasta. But as we learn more about
good nutrition, it's clear that whole grains are better
than refined grains. What's the difference? Brown
rice is a whole grain, but white rice is not. Likewise,
wheat bread contains whole grains, whereas 100%
white bread does not.
4. Slurp sensibly. It's not just about what you eat —
drinks count, too! Milk has been a favorite
lunchtime drink for a long time. If you don't like
milk, choose water. Avoid juice drinks and sodas.
5. Balance your lunch. When people talk about
balanced meals, they mean meals that include a mix
of food groups: some grains, some fruits, some
vegetables, some meat or protein foods, and some
dairy foods such as milk and cheese. Try to do this
with your lunch. If you don't have a variety of foods
on your plate, it's probably not balanced. A double
order of french fries and sweetened beverage, for
example, would not make for a balanced lunch.
