College & Career Fair A Big Success
TOGETHER
Students at Jefferson, Taft and
Crossroads, all three Ferndale Adult &
Alternative Education sites, enjoyed
a College and Career Fair last week.
Representatives from area colleges,
trade schools, employers and military
were there to answer any questions
the students had, as well as give out information, applications and
goodies. The students left the day with packets of information,
and decisions to make on their futures. One student, the oldest
attending Taft at 38, above, was proud to share her story about
coming back to school to get her high school diploma, and filled
out an application to attend OCC’s nursing program at the Fair.
See page 5 for information on
the Census and answers to why
some Ferndale residents have
Detroit on their Census label.
Outstanding Music Festival Results
Both the FHS Symphony Band and Wind Ensemble
performed in MSBOA District 4 Band Festival
at Clarkston HS on March 13. Both groups
received Straight Division I (excellent) ratings: all
3 judges in performance and the sight-reading
judge felt they were excellent. Congratulations!
The Pajama Game, based on the novel 7 ½ Cents by Richard Bissell, is the story of struggles
- between labor and management, profits and production, love and values, men and
women. The workers at the Sleep Tite Pajama Factory want a 7 ½ cent raise, the boss is
resistant, and the conflict eventually threatens everyone’s livelihood. Of course in the
midst of the problems a romance is creeping in between Sid Sorokin (FHS junior Jairen
Lott), the factory supervisor, and Babe Williams (junior Paige Pfleger), the head of the
Grievance Committee. There’s also Vernon Hines (senior Peter Ceglarek), the time-keeper
who can’t hide his jealousy from Gladys Hotchkiss (junior Kelsey Dupuis) the office
secretary who sees both sides of the factory’s problems.
The workers go through fun times, then frustration and must resort to desperate measures
that threaten not only their jobs, but the future of the Sleep Tite Pajama Company.
Resolution comes from an unlikely collaboration, but only if the workers and management
can agree.
The original broadway show opened in May of 1954 featuring Eddie Foy, Jr., Carol Haney,
John Raitt and Janis Paige with a young Shirley MacLaine in the chorus. Bob Fosse was
the choreographer in his first Broadway show. The Pajama Game ran for over 1,000
performances and won a Tony for Best Musical. It was revived in 1973 with Hal Linden and
Cab Calloway and again in 2006 with Harry Connick, Jr.
Performances: March 26, 27, 28; Friday & Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm, Sunday
matinees at 3 pm, @ 881 Pinecrest, Ferndale MI
Tickets: $6/adult, $4/students & senior citizens, $3/children under 12

Students at Roosevelt Primary School were treated to a Guest
Reader of Excellence Day, on Friday March 19. Teachers,
Administrators, Staff members and Board of Education
members from the Ferndale Schools, as well as Ferndale
Policemen Captain Collins, read books to classes as part of
Roosevelt’s ‘March is Reading Month’ activities. Each guest
was greeted from members of the 3rd Grade Kindness club,
offered refreshments, and were escorted to their assigned
classroom. Each guest reader, including Superintendent Gary
Meier (above), selected a book to read (or two), many were
favorites from the reader’s childhood! The students very
much enjoyed their day of stories.
Students at Kennedy Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss (his birthday
was March 2) many different ways.
Students in Mrs. Watson’s 4,5,6 Multi-age classroom spent time
reading to Kindergartners in Mrs. Lusk’s class. The younger
students wore Dr. Seuss Hats that they
made, while the older ones read Dr.
Seuss books.
Down the hall from the reading
activities, students from Mrs. Western’s
and Mrs. Bresson’s classes cooked Green
Eggs and Ham during their scheduled
cooking day.
Take a look at photos to the right to see
all the fun activities!
Grant Students Ethnic Potluck
Celebration & Fun Assembly!
Students at Grant Preschool enjoyed their annual Ethnic Potluck
last week! Students learn about and eat food from cultures around
the world. An addition to this year’s celebration was an assembly
by Guy Lewis, from the Chautauqua Express Musical Programs.
Since 1986, Guy Louis has been presenting his educational school
assemblies and family fun concerts. His school assemblies involve
fun non-traditional instruments, with each culturally enriching
program matching school themes and curriculum. Students got
to interact and play some of the instruments Mr. Louis brought,
they danced to his music and had a wonderful time! For more
Board of Education News: 3/15/10
Welcome, Jim Pfleger, Trustee
At the regular Board Meeting held Monday,
March 15, the Board voted to appoint a new
member to fill the seat vacated in February
as a result of the resignation of Bruce Bethuy.
The Board appointed Jim Pfleger to fill the seat
through June 2011. Jim Pfleger has served on
the Board’s Finance Committee since 2006, is a
board member of the Ferndale Fine Arts Boosters
(FAB), Vice President of the FHS Marching Band Committee,
and Pit Boss for the Marching Band for the past two seasons. He
has been a set construction volunteer for the Ferndale Musicals for
nine years, serving as co-construction head the past two years. He
has a daughter who is a junior at FHS, a daughter who graduated
from FHS in 2008, and his wife is an FHS graduate, as well.
Legislators Jacobs, Cogen-Lipton Visit
State Senator Gilda Jacobs and State Representative Ellen Cogen-
Lipton spoke to the Board about the status of school funding and
the state budget. Senator Jacobs praised the district for sending a
delegation to Lansing to meet with the leadership and ask for support
of school funding, but she said we need to keep the pressure
on and “keep the dialogue going.” Although she is skeptical about
the likelihood of making significant changes to the school tax
structure before the 2010 election, she urged voters to be active
in supporting candidates who support their issues. She closed by
saying, “We have to reinvent ourselves as a state. It took 100 years
to make us the manufacturing state we are; it’s going to take more
than 5 or 6 years to change.” Ellen Cogen-Lipton urged voters to
continue their vigilance in being informed about the state budget.
She invites the public to the Pleasant Ridge Recreation Center on
Thursday, March 25 at 6:30 pm to hear her speak about the state
budget and answer questions from citizens.
Questions? Call Ms. Kuznar at 248.548.8600 X5173
The following are talking points from the US Census Bureau regarding
how the Census forms were addressed in major metropolitan areas.
• We are getting reports from a small number of communities that they are receiving census
questionnaires that have a city in the address on the envelope that is different than what they
usually see on their mail.
• This does NOT mean that they will be counted in the city listed in the mailing address on the
envelope. The census questionnaire contains a bar code that ensures that census respondents are
counted at the physical location where they received their form.
• The 2010 Census mail-out is the largest single delivery ever undertaken by the United States
– over 120 million forms were mailed this week. To streamline delivery in a mailing this large,
addresses in a particular ZIP code sometimes were all labeled using a single city name that is
valid for the ZIP code, even though some people in that area usually receive mail addressed to
a different city name. The Postal Service does not have a problem with this because for many
addresses there are multiple city names that are perfectly acceptable for accurate delivery.
• The 2010 Census Bureau has taken all appropriate steps to ensure that the Address List used for
the 2010 Census is the most accurate ever compiled. Throughout the country the census forms are
being delivered to the correct location, even those that do not have a city name that people are
used to seeing on their mail.
• Throughout the decade census employees have been building the census address list. Since the
2000 Census, the Census Bureau has been working with every municipality in the country to
ensure the accuracy of our maps and addresses. Additionally, we have been working with the
Postal Service to regularly update address information. Last Spring, as part of this process, Census
employees walked every street in America to update the address list and collect GPS coordinates
to make sure each housing unit is in the correct geographic location.
• It is THIS location - the one associated with your zip code, not the city name on your questionnaire,
that determines where you will be counted.

The Census: A Snapshot
6
\ \ What: The census is a count of everyone residing in the
United States.
\ \ Who: All U.S. residents must be counted—both citizens and
non citizens.
\ \ When: You will receive your questionnaire in March 2010 either
by U.S. mail or hand delivery. Some people in remote areas will
be counted in person.
\ \ Why: The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every
10 years to count the population and determine the number of
seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
\ \ How: Households should complete and mail back their
questionnaires upon receipt. Households that do not respond
may receive a replacement questionnaire in early April. Census
takers will visit households that do not return questionnaires to
take a count in person.
A Complete Count:
The Importance of Census Data
\ \
\ \
\ \
Every year, the federal government allocates more than $400
billion to states and communities based, in part, on census data.
Census data are used to determine locations for retail stores,
schools, hospitals, new housing developments and other
community facilities.
Census data determine boundaries for state and local legislative
and congressional districts.
2010 Census Questionnaire:
Easy, Important and Safe
\ \
\ \
QUESTIONS
MINUTES
TO DEFINE WHO WE ARE AS A NATION
With only 10 questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire takes
approximately 10 minutes to complete. Households are asked
to provide key demographic information, including: whether a
housing unit is rented or owned; the address of the residence;
and the names, genders, ages and races of others living in
the household.
By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s
responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and
law enforcement entities.
CENSUS HISTORY
The first census took place
in 1790 to determine the
number of seats each state
would have in the U.S. House
of Representatives. The census
also was created to gain a
better understanding of where
people lived and to establish
patterns of settlement as the
nation grew.
ABOUT THE
CENSUS BUREAU
The Census Bureau
was established in 1902.
Today, in addition to
administering the census
of population and housing,
the Census Bureau conducts
more than 200 annual surveys,
including the American
Community Survey, the
Current Population Survey
and economic censuses
every five years.
We move
forward
when you
send it back.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
The Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) has received a limited supply of free
vaccines made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). These
vaccines include those newly required for sixth grade school entry, namely varicella, Tdap,
and Meningococcal.
While OCHD always provides these vaccines free to children who are uninsured or whose
insurance does not cover vaccination, the ARRA funds make these vaccines free to insured
families with co-pays and deductibles that would otherwise make these vaccines
unaffordable. No documentation of hardship is required to participate. This is a one-time
program and supplies are limited.
We are pleased to be able to offer these vaccines to protect the children in our county. Visit
one of our Health Division offices in Pontiac, Southfield and Walled Lake to have your
child vaccinated through this program. If you have questions, please call our Nurse-on-Call
at 800-848-5533.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Forzley, R.S., M.P.A. Julie Vaishampayan, M.D., M.P.H.
